That brought up a memory of watching the movie Zita and Gita in my childhood. There's a chase scene when the girl runs and a man follows, and the girl is barefoot, and the camera focuses on their feet. It always drew my attention how different are the ways those two people place their feet while running. If I remember correct, they're running on a dirt road, so not a very hard surface.

Thank you for a balanced overview. I second everything except this: I want shoes away from my ankles! Far better for me if the shoe hangs on to my instep. Shoes that stay right with your foot (snug everywhere but the toe box) allow you to feel more energetic and be more surefooted.

I switched to Dvorak about 24 years ago... time does fly. I'm at the point that I really go months, maybe years without thinking about keyboard layout. When I see videos like this I'm reminded how much "normal" people are in the dark about the subject. It often takes years before coworkers even realize my keyboards are "weird", when one day they grab it to try and show me something and I'm like "uh, no, you don't wanna do that..." I can't remember very well what typing on a qwerty even feels like. It's so rare these days that I even encounter one (as remote administration and cloud computing have taken off, the need to go to physical machines has diminished). But when I do for a moment have to, I don't seem to struggle with it much, even after all these years. My favourite trick everyone must try when they get good enough, is when someone walks up and randomly asks a question: look up, say "yes?", and stay fixed on them while continuing to type at pace, Confident that it's right, and it is. Literally leaves people speechless.... Some even forget what the question was. :) Most of my typing is coding though, so often I find the more esoteric solutions break down when not inputting plain runs of text. More often navigating and using lots of special characters.... I find a lot of the minimalist approaches start to get a bit fiddly. Perhaps at this point, even I am too set in my ways. Well done video though.

Though the movement is necessary, dancers/gymnasts have fully understood this concept for years without a "movement". It's Basics, when learning contemporary or modern dance styles where you dance barefoot. If we strengthen our feet barefoot, we gain more strength and balance in every position and single leg standing positions, AND prevent most lower leg injuries. Mind-blown lol.

I have narrow skinny feet with high arches. I hate wide shoes and wide toe boxes because it feels like my feet are flopping around inside my shoes too much, and I feel unstable - I also get shin splints when my shoes are too wide. I either walk around barefoot all day (at home on weekends) or in really flat minimal shoes (Tom’s, Birkenstocks, flip flops). But when I’m out exercising (walking or jogging), I use very narrow, tight, high support running shoes with custom orthotics for stability.

Our ancestors and barefoot societies didn't and don't run like we in the West run. It was more of a run-walk-run-walk with a final sprint in pursuing prey. We now have endless roads of monotonous hard surface which modern us have chosen to run endlessly on. I have done my share of long distance running in my past but the development of neuromas stopped me and I realised that there were better exercises. I love my barefoots. Ive been using barefoot militsrt boots for about 10 years now. They have a wide front for toe displacement, which is great, but i found the lack of cushioning very unpleasant for the city and particularly walking on pavement, which i do a lot of. After about 6 years i ended up adding a flat cushioning for the whole shoe with maybe 5mm heel raise, no arch support of course. Best upgrade ever. I feel it is a good mix. When i run i still use proper form, but my feet dont end up in pain after running or walking on pavement. Now i generally use a lot of sandals and my modified barefoot boots. Tbh i think sandals are the best solution for walking on pavement. I use strictly havaianas. They have a slight heel raise, but not so much that ir becomes a problem. The biggest thing is being able to splay your toes.

A year ago I switched to barefoot shoes - it took me a month to get used to them (carefully) and I naturally adjusted my walking to avoid the pain of the heel strike. I still have chronic back pain but my feet are great. Wide toebox is amazing and I find because of the design of the shoes mean they are better ventilated hence my feet have never overheated since switching. Until now I hadn't heard of anyone advocating that we should forefoot strike while walking. If we just look at the most efficient way to move, it makes sense that we would heel strike while walking and forefoot strike while running. I've seen some diagrams that show that plainly, but can't remember where. Personally, I wish that there would be barefoot shoes with an even but slightly more padded sole, because it's true that walking on hard concrete all day on 3mm soles can tire you out. It's funny how everyone says that you should take your time when switching to barefoot shoes, but I just switched cold turkey and it was fine. I didn't notice my calves feeling strained at all, but that must have been because I was already spending about half the year walking in sandals with relatively thin and completely flat soles.

So to write something like a1b you need 1 tap for ‘a’, 3 taps for ‘1’, one tap to exit the number layer, then one tap for ‘b’? So you need 6 taps for what on a normal keyboard takes 3?
