Thank you for the open ended explanation. 🙏🏻 I do think, that given Tyler’s faith, the journey to Sun ultimately will lead to the Son. His open minded stance however means that the ending will be intended for everyone to connect with, and I’m very excited for it

As someone that considers themselves Christian. This makes me very happy, it's nice to see someone put their religious beliefs into their music. Even though he's not extremely vocal about it, it's cool. I wasn't raised in a home where my mom beat us and forced her view of Christianity on us or used Christianity as a way to justify hateful comments. She would take us to church and tell us that we will have our own path with Him and it's our choice to make.

Furthering a bit i just thought about in drown the lines "I walk to you, rain falls from you. Can you wash me? Can you drown me?" In literature, water/washing of a person signifies baptism/renewal/rebirth pretty much everywhere you can read. So, pairing that with your interpretation of the sky being God could deepen those lines to Tyler literally asking God to reform him, or make him better, or to basically take him and make some sort of Tyler 2.0 that is maybe less sad. OR, going with the line of "Can you drown me?" Tyler is asking God to just completely, and maybe even violently, get rid of him/remove him from the very earth/ground (ground and earth in particular because, well, they are not the sky, and could even be called the exact opposite of the sky. I'm not very religious, so this next part can be read with a grain of salt, but one notable biblical figure that also follows a similar line of thinking to that is Judas. Judas is controversial in some sects of Christianity, but going by the Catholic interpretation (or at least what I understand of it), our betraying homeboy here is stuck in hell completely frozen/paralyzed. However, if you think about Judas in terms of character analysis, rather than biblical teaching, you'll have to consider the extremely close, brotherly relationship he had with Jesus. Judas betrayed Jesus, yes, but then regretted it to the point of suicide, and is then relegated to an eternity in hell, which is torture. This guy hated himself so much, despised himself and the action he took, that one could argue he outright *refuses* to move, choosing instead to root himself to some corner of hell in an effort to forcibly not exist anymore. Anyways, I kind of started yapping, but I felt like some of this brain vomit would be interesting to consider.

@@poptivistI would like to add a couple things to what you said. One of the most famous bible stories is Noah. We're God flood the whole earth because everyone was so evil and so much innocent blood being spilled that the blood in the ground literally shooted for justice. Second I would like to point to ancient Jewish cosmology. And in ancient cosmology the pre creation state, or rather pre ordered state, it's was just the waters and God. But the God created heavens and earth and set the waters apart. And waters in ancient cosmology represented decreation, or rather chaos. And this was usually personified by serpents or sea serpents. Anyways sorry for rambling

honestly Tylerrs writing with regards to religious text and the trauma that can be sustained from being raised in that environment speaks so closely to me. I know what he's trying to say but there's no hope in any lifetime i could explain it, but i see it ripple out through all his art. its beautiful and other words that fail me right now. I'm glad the algorithm brought me this video, its somewhat validated what i've been feeling!

LUA!!! Wonderful video and I appreciate all your knowledge and work here! @abidonaghy with all respect to your opinion, I can 99.9% guarantee you that Tyler was not traumatized from being raised in a family of faith. It’s my opinion that Tyler does write about wanting to be able to have proof God exists, looking for a concrete source of spiritual strength. He questions - which everyone on this earth has probably pondered at one point and he yearns to know God is real, especially when he needs God at vulnerable moments. In the end I know that Tyler’s entire family is a family of faith, and here I can assume Tyler also lives in the faith that God or Him or a higher being exists. Of course I am not in Tyler’s mind, and I am speculating based on what I know about his family and in-laws and Jenna’s siblings. Personally I feel “Trees” lyrics literally state Tyler searching for God - I also consider “Trees” a final blessing from Tyler for every person in earshot, and this is why he ends every show with “Trees”. That’s my hypothesis. I feel Tyler is spreading love and not for any certain religion, but love and safety and peace to all. Tyler is a minister in certain ways and his live shows are like church to me! Every one can define what art -lyrics- means to each individual. Everyone has their own belief in a higher power and that relationship is personal. Tyler questions everything. Especially when we suffer from mental health issues - faith doesn’t seem to be enough to take the pain away. I’m sorry this is long-winded and I probably went off course, but the main point I wanted to make is that I very much DOUBT Tyler was ever TRAUMATIZED by being raised in a strong faithful Christian home.

I don't onow if it really relates to the video. But I think i just realized something about mulberry street. He says "we are pushing sideways, keep sidewalk unde your feet". Like he is telling to people to move out of the middle of the street and back to the sidewalk just like the next semester music video. As a way of saying that the things you use to keep your bliss help you get out of this suicidal state and back to the sidewalk to keep going. I don't know if it makes sense, but I like this interpretation

  • @VanetaRogers1

Love this video. I agree with you on almost everything!! You are so smart to figure all this out and I’m so glad you shared it. I do want to say, however, that I think you are missing one thing….I think some of the lyrics you cited to say that Tyler wants to die are actually a Christian thing - and not about suicide. In Christianity, you are supposed to die to self. That’s what baptism is - you kill your old self and are born again in Christ. So although I don’t know that everything you referenced is referring to a Christian death (you’re probably right about a few referring to a desire for literal death), I’m pretty sure many of them are - especially the one in Holding On To You (you can take my life, you can take my soul). It’s like how, in Trees, he sings “I can feel your breath, I can feel my death, I want to know you…” - he’s not talking about his body dying; he’s talking about his spiritual death and being taken over by the Holy Spirit (God). He wants God to take his life, take his soul, but not his body. At least, that’s what I think. But only Tyler knows!
