After DragonCon this year (2021), I decided to learn how to craft foam objects for cosplay. This channel was created to allow me to share my experiences learning my new hobby and provide direction to others who may want to craft some of the items that I create.
I wanted to make some Warhammer 40k Space Marine armor, but I found the foam templates available not to my liking. There are some Pepakura patterns out there but I do not care much for them. So I am making my own. For the time being, this channel will be used to demonstrate how to construct the Space Marine Mark VII armor I am making.
I will not be focusing on template or foam preparation. Check the links below for great links to some truly awesome folks in the community who provide great direction on that front.
My videos will focus on assembly of the prepared parts.

hey man, I hope you are doing well this channel is cool I hope you keep at it
What is the thickness of the foam you used¿
Each template is marked with the foam thickness. Thicknesses are also listed in the assembly guide. For this, in general, 5 mm is used.
Just curious as to how far past the template is recommended for part 3F to get the 45 overcut to fit correctly? I assume at least 10mm for the other parts to lime up??
You should cut just on the outside of that line (as it says in the guide) with your blade at a 45 degree overcut. Looking at the unit circle, at 45 degrees, both sides of the angle are the same length. The foam is 10 mm for this piece. If the thickness is 10 mm, the offset at the bottom of the cut, mathematically, is also 10 mm. I am still not sure what you are asking though. KZread is not an ideal spot for me to provide you with support. Please reach out to me via either Etsy, [email protected], or on Discord. Let us chat. Hopefully, I can get you going in the right direction.
it is possible to print with a 3dprinter ?
Just finished this Part. What a hard build, but the result looks fantastic. Thanks for the patterns, the written instruction and the videos.
Working on putting together the patterns I got from your store. These videos are an invaluable resource. It'll take me a while, but once the whole armor is completed I'm gonna be letting everyone know where I bought the files from. Thank you for these amazing products.
I am happy to hear you are having a good experience and find the videos helpful. Please do not hesitate to reach out if you have any questions or issues with your build!
I mean looks like a great start for converting the mk3 into a mk2
This piece was made to more closely match a Sigismund model that they were trying to emulate. It is definitely closer to Mark II that Mark III.
I'm struggling with this file but I think I printed my pieces awkwardly and the parts are cut in half.
Reach out to me via Etsy, crawdaddycosplay.com, or at [email protected]. We will get you sorted.
Building the helmet, bought the 3d print just the other day. Amazing. You should make a wolf face attachment i can print as an add on would be awesome. Definitely would buy as bought and made whole mkVII suit. Backpack took me like a whole week to build and assemble. ill get some photos up once I'm done. Super easy to put together and these tutorials make it even easier to do all the way in Australia. Love your work man, wondering what my next project should be...
I don't know if you can help me. So I put a pepakura file in the program and it all worked well like in your video but im stuck on what type of millimeter of foam to use because it doesn't mention it on the templates
If it is one of my templates, the newer ones have a hexagon on them with the thickness, in millimeters, on them. This symbol is explained in the drawing legend. If it is older, all of my templates come with a guide. There will be a table in there that lists all of the pieces and the recommended thicknesses. If it is not one of my templates, I am not sure what I can do to help, but I will do what I can. Message me on Etsy and let's see what we can do.
@@CrawdaddyCosplay ok! But what about templates that aren't yours, like in my case I downloaded foam templates for an halo odst armor and it doesn't mention what type of millimeter of foam to use, does it say what type of millimeter of foam to use on armorsmith?
@xenozip805 I honestly could not say. Sounds like a big miss if that information was not provided by the supplier. I would make sure you scour the listing and any information that came with the templates. I wish I could be of more help, but there are so many variables that go into what is the correct thickness and where it should go, that any answer I give you may just make the problem worse. I have pieces that use everything from 2 to 12 mm foam and everything in-between. Depending on the template, it may not matter either. You are in a bit of a pickle. If I had to try to build this, I would start with 8 mm foam, start my build, and adjust where needed. This could require a fair bit of rework and would be less than ideal. Sorry I could not be of more help.
Do you have a pattern for the hoses? I didn't see them included.
I do not provide them. I tried making hoses using some 2 to 4 mm foam and some templates, and they looked awful. In the guide, I provide the outer diameter and lengths of hose you will need to complete the helmet. I know plastic flex conduit looks really good and is pretty cheap. You could also get foam dowels. If you want to try a foam pattern for the hoses, you are welcome to what I have, but keep in mind I did not include it because it came out poorly. Reach out to me via whichever channel you used to get the pattern, and I will get you what I have.
@@CrawdaddyCosplay Thank you!
Hello ! Let's say I am 1,73 m tall but I want the armor size to be more lore-friendly. Can I scale it to more or less 1,9 m and use stilts? Thank you again for your amazing builds and vids!
You can, and folks have scaled my patterns up to full size marines and have used stilts. @InquisitorCrafts on Instagram is a good example. The easiest way is to build a full size avatar in Armorsmith and scale up my patterns. I made a video that shows how to scale with Armorsmith and have put them on the channel. kzread.info/dash/bejne/nX2Yt9GqmJqzd9Y.htmlsi=o5yHeWYsg9fJnTb5
Thank you very much^^ (Holy Emperor, this is a quick answer!)@@CrawdaddyCosplay
Hello! Excellent work, as always! Will you provide a Mark X Tacitus pattern for the Aquila Imperialis/Palatine? Or perhaps the Mark VII Aquila pattern should be good enough?
So many folks just used the Mark VII Aquila or Imperialis patterns for the Mark X that I have not been paying much attention to it. I would suggest just using the Mark VII stuff on the Mark X. Folks have not had any issues.
@@CrawdaddyCosplay That is what I thought, thank you very much^^!
Hello! Thank you for your great work! Do you plan to add the basic weapons to your shop? Would be great to see you make some bolters and chainswords^^.
Thanks for the feedback. There is a lot of that already out there, so I have not prioritized them, but it is something I want to make eventually.
Hello! Thank you for the incredible amount of precision and talent you put in your work, making cosplay accessible for basically everyone. It means a lot for a 40k fan like me. Definitely subscribed. Keep up the good work, sir!
Wow, thank you!
I'm about 90% done with this party and I have to say that (so far) the shins have been the most difficult and frustrating. "There's a fair bit of tension" when attaching the fronts to the backs is a huge understatement. That being said, I'm powering through and grateful for the templates. I have the thighs chest and power pack left to complete then on to figuring out how to put it all together
The good news is, I build everything I offer, so you know it can be done. I realize this does not relieve you of your difficulties, but we know it is not impossible. I would be glad to assist you in any way I can. Going back and forth on KZread is probably not the best way to help. Please reach out to me either via Etsy or Discord (crawdaddycosplay).
@CrawdaddyCosplay oh man, it's all good, but thanks for the offer. I'll definitely keep that in mind for the chest and pack because I feel like those are going to be tons of fun. I'm finding out that foam clay helps to fix seams that don't always want to to cooperate. I love the templates and the walkthrough videos definitely help. Thanks!
bought the mk7 and the corvus helmet, im so excited to build this
The plans that are for 8 X 11 print version are off on the cuts between the pages
This is probably the worst possible format for me to provide you with any support. Please message me via my Etsy store, [email protected], or on Discord (CrawdaddyCosplay). If I could see what you are doing to print the files, I may be able to pinpoint the problem. The files print fine on my end, but that does not really help you at all. Reach out to me via the channels I listed and I will get you to where you need to be.
Just bought the plans! I'm going to scale them down I think a bit as I'm working on a scout cosplay. But this video really made me see how to put it all together. Great work!
Well I know what I need to do for next dragoncon. I don't suppose you have any plans to make a deathwatch pauldron?
Does the pattern template you sell on Etsy match a certain body dimension or do you just have to measure that out
My parts come with a drawing with bounding box dimensions you can scale with. Better than that, there is a scaling model STL that comes with each file that you can use something like Arnorsmith to scale your templates with. One of my videos show you how.
Just bought this pattern from you r store and have begun cutting my templates! Can't wait to see how this all shapes up.
did you ever make a video about the other waist parts? if so, how can i get to them? also, where did you get the cones, and the rest of the supplies from?
Unfortunately, I did not make videos for my first few parts I made that were Mark VII. I also do not have a video for the Grey Knights chest piece. I built that fast for a friend who wore it to this year's DragonCon. All the information you need to build the piece is on the templates and in the guide I provide with each part. I got the cones from TNTCosplay.
@@CrawdaddyCosplay got it, thanks so much man. I'm gunna try to rush my build to try to get it done by Halloween. Wish me luck lol, about 26hrs work for about, a month and a half.
when its all put together what is the inside circumference?
It depends on what you scale the templates to. You need to scale every piece to fit your measurements. I recommend you build an Avatar in Armorsmith Designer and use the scaling models I provide with all of my files to scale the template to fit you. I have a video on this channel that shows you how. It is pretty easy. Let me know if you have any more questions.
This is absolutely sick, love what you do man, keep it up! Also could we get a suit up vid?
Quick question. Does the templates comes with the type of Foam you need to use, or you can decide which one to use?
You can use any brand you like. I provide the thicknesses you SHOULD use in the guide that comes with three templates. As long as you are willing to be responsible for any adjustments you have to make on the fly, you can use whatever thickness you like.
@@CrawdaddyCosplay thanks. Thickness is what I was actually asking, not type 😅. Then all is sorted, time to build then
why in the name of terra are at only 500 subs, you should have way more! im so hyped to start this armour!
Great video and great instructions as always. Thank you for all you work!
When will you have a Mk X for print
Just bought all of the Mark X Tacticus files!!!! Gotta year to build the Suit and paint it up as a Blood Angel Bladeguard Veteran!!! I'm going to enter it into a Cosplay Contest in 2024!!! If I can get it built before March 2024 I'll enter it into another one as well!!! Is there a certain tag I can use for Facebook and Instagram to show this wonderful creator the process?
Instagram: #crawdaddycosplay Facebook: @CrawdaddyCosplayATL I look forward to watching your build!
That smile at the end when you know you brought something from the ether into "real life" I live for that too and it makes all the time worth it.
Great patterns and great tutorial, I am doing fabius bile and wouldnt have been able to get him done by Dragoncon without these as a starting point. Thank you!!!
Hi - I don’t know if my question is going to be answered, but firstly I want to thank you for putting these videos for everyone visual reference. Secondly, do you sell the pieces so that others like me who don’t have a large garage or warehouse can follow your videos by assembling? I did check your store and only found 3D files, I don’t know if you would make an exception. I would love to build my own space marine cosplay one day, but as I’m just getting into the hobby so I don’t have all the tools needed. Thank you for your time and feedback on this matter, I look forward to seeing more of your videos!
Please clarify your question. Are you asking if I sell physical pieces of cut foam that you assemble, or if I sell files to allow you to prepare your own foam, or something else altogether?
Awesome video as usual. I am alway watching them before assembling. But I got one question. What happened to your beard? 🙂
It comes and goes at the whims of the woman in my life. :)
Is the original size A1?
Unfortunately, no. They are all custom size. Most folks do not have access to plotters that can print everything in a single sheet, so I did not bother to make the sheets conform to regular drawing sizes. Looking back, I will probably set make it a project to go back and redo all of my drawings to either conform to a standard drawing size OR nest the pieces better to waste less paper, but probably not both.
Underated channel, perhaps if you did some smaller projects you can get more views, like a standard guardsman chest plate and helmet would be cool
I appreciate your feedback. I will look at getting some Guard stuff our there.
What are you using to cut the foam at the bevels before you put it together? Is it a hot foam cutter?
Do these come in one size fits all or is there a sizing chart?
Thanks and love the D&D shirt
would these be compatible with stilts?
They are compatible in that they do not have a sole. You may need to remove material so that the stilt fits through the hole for the foot. This would be covered up by the shin.
Making this now
Some folks have provided feedback that this can be a rather difficult build. I would recommend you watch the video closely where you may be having issues. Please do not be afraid to reach out via Etsy, Facebook, Discord, or crawdaddycosplay.com if you have any questions or feedback during your build.
Awesome love it 😊
Looks great mate!
Any Chance youll give this bad boy a Primaris version? Similar to the Black templar Marshal?
Do you have a link to any reference art?
spikeybits.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/154f4566-black-templars-army-box-revealed-marshal-3x-gen-con.jpg
Currently taping templates together for cutout. Thank you for doing this for us. The video tutorials for assembling and the layouts are wonderful. I never would have been able to muster up the willpower to do everything from the ground up. I'm gunna win Halloween for the next ten years with this bad boy. You're the best dude. And if this turns out as good as I think it's gunna. I'll plaster CRAWDADDY COSPLAY stickers all over this bad boy to the point you'll think there's a new chapter.
Hey! love the video and definitely interested in getting the templates i was wondering what type of glue you used?
Barge contact cement. Any contact cement should work. I like Barge and Weldwood though.
@@CrawdaddyCosplay sweet thanks so much
Just found this man today and hey his work are amazing
Do you have any of your creations painted? Could we see them?
Pretty much all of my work is for other folks so I do not really have anything completed to show you. However, instagram.com/inquisitorcrafts/ uses a lot of my stuff and has several finished pieces if you wanted to see them.
This looks really awesome but since I am loyal to the core to the Emperor of Mankind I cant built this one 😅
I must admit, I felt a little disloyal designing it. I am fairly certain that the Ordo Hereticus has dispatched an inquisitor.
What thickness of foam are you using?
It varies based on what I need. I usually start with 8 mm as a "base" thickness and will adjust based on what a part needs. Each piece comes with a detailed guide that identifies the recommended foam thicknesses for each piece.
@@CrawdaddyCosplay thanks! I’ve been looking into purchasing the patterns and was looking into what supplies I might need
