Scott Flaherty Voice Studios

Scott Flaherty Voice Studios

This channel is dedicated to certain teachers, mentors, and influences whose work, techniques and methods should not be forgotten. The first tribute series will be two complete concerts by renowned dramatic tenor and pedagogue, Thomas LoMonaco. The concerts, recorded in 1953 and 1954, accompanied by Metropolitan Opera assistant conductor and coach, Alberta Masiello, offer a glimpse into LoMonaco's unique artistry. The videos themselves contain numerous articles, career memorabilia, reviews, and production photography dating to the period of the concerts. Those releases will be followed by numerous recordings from earlier in his career including a number of arias recorded in the studio of his teacher Dr. Douglas Stanley, as well as a trove of material featuring the work of his brother, internationally accomplished lyric tenor Jerome LoMonaco.

Jerome Lo Monaco had a beautiful lyric tenor voice. I saw him in Rigoletto circa 1960 at the Brooklyn Academy of Music, and he was a very fine singer.

One of the most beautiful voices I’ve ever heard. So deep and rich, squillante yet somehow so warm and enveloping. Tremendous.

I saw LoMonaco TWICE in Rigoletto at the Brooklyn Academy of Music circa 1960. He was a very fine lyric tenor that sang extremely well. His voice wasn't quite as large as it is here, but He was an impressive Duke. He never sounded like Di Stefano and didn't have to.

No question about the quality of the voice. The high notes are clear and sparkling - the envy of any tenor. However, I find that the artistic portion lacks homogeneity. Some phrases are tender, even melting while others are hard, devoid of feeling - almost steely in textural sound. On balance, this still an above-average recording. A tenor well worth hearing more of

Many thanks to Scott Flaherty for posting these performances by our beloved teacher. He was one of the great singers of the twentieth century, as you can hear, and an exceptional teacher. As a man, he was one of the kindest, most generous, and psychologically astute people I've ever met. A joke teller and raconteur par excellence, he was also probably the funniest. I loved the man. Rest in peace, Tommy.
