My grandfather (RIP) saw Arthur during the war in Malta. He turned up late, drunk and made a remark about Lord Boothby that drew gasps. But it was a good show, my granda said. Arthur attempted ventriloquism in his war years, but it wasn't good. The dummy was called, "Sambo" and all it did was make grunting noises and was eventually incinerated as it was thought to be spreading lies, propaganda and disease (it was actually Arthur doing this, as recently unearthed archives have show). Simpler times and in the end, Hitler was defeated.

@@johnkavanagh3830 The charictor is loosly based on a mix of Arthur askey and max miller. This particular sketch is, i think based on the will hey movie " the goose steps out".. These are just educated guesses though, as i remember that movie from when i was a child being on BB2 in a week day evening. It was the night my dad swore he saw a UFO while out walking the dog so thats why it stuck in my mind lol😅😅😅🛸🛸👽👾

Like all comedy, this sketch is underpinned with sadness. So many comedians I laughed at in my youth when I wasn't sophisticated, I look back and revisit them and can't see what I found so funny.

The canned laughter of the Fast Show contrasts beautifully with the intent of this sketch. It would have been more apt in an order of magnitude if it had been disabled for this but sadly the policy at the time was "fake laugh = On".
