Around 16:20 #20 I was thinking, for complete beginners, maybe it could work to do the inverted version where you highlight the words you actually know and recognise.. then you could print out a paragraph of info on a topic you want to understand and once the entire chunk of text is like glowing in highlighter, you've succeeded :)

Pro tip, for more pitch accent (or accent I general) go to the west of Sweden. The closer to Norway, the more you get.

native english speaker learning spanish as a second language. I chose spanish because my country borders Mexico and approximately 20% of people in the US speak spanish as a first or second language. Also, spanish is the 4th (I think) most commonly spoken language (thus I'd be able to communicate with a larger volume of people) and I'd like to travel across the rest of The Americas and so spanish would be helpful. Its also supposed to be relatively easy for an english speaker to learn spanish due to the large volume of cognates. That being said.... I've tried numerous methods ....all traditional and it made me feel like a complete idiot after spending two years, on and off, and relatively little to show for the effort (flashcards for vocabulary and memorzing verb conjugation tables). I've recently started the comprehensible input method and simply focused listening and watching of videos....and I feel like I've made more progress in a few weeks than I did in the last couple of years. I actually think that I did slowly learn things over those two years but with the comprehensible input...its triggering something in my head or perhaps I am now actually using knowledge that I gained. The superbeginner CI is easy for me to understand and even the beginner level is relatively easy. I picked up an A2 level ebook and I can get through it relatively easy...the words I don't yet know aren't a limit because I can guess their meaning from the context. I wish I had used watching simple target language videos from day one.

This is a great point ...and perhaps thanks to you and users like you, that were not holding back and shared this frustration with keeping a streak, Duolingo changed their ways. There is something called "Freeze" that automatically saves my streak if I don't make it. It is given to me (I don't have to purchase it) . I think this feature gets updated once you are a longer-term user (like over 365 days). That is just my deduction. Anyway, Duolingo is not perfect, but it is definitely enjoyable. The Streak mania can be avoided these days. Otherwise, I would quit like you a long time ago. Keeping the days counted helps me to have a healthy competition with my daughter who tries to stay ahead of me, thus doing her Spanish with a more willing heart. :) Again, thanks for sharing your rightful frustration that made perhaps things better.

They give you a freeze because it makes them more money when users keep their "streak" in tact. But it's not a streak if you miss a day. Duolingo might call it a streak, but they are just straight up wrong about what the word means. Since I made this video 5 years ago, Duolingo has only gotten worse.

I'm Swedish so Swedish is my native language but due to speaking so much English online (and I've noticed this with several people my age) I tend to forget Swedish words and use English ones instead, sometimes even using English grammar whilst speaking Swedish. One thing I did just today was talking to my dad about the seeds in a fruit. In Swedish seeds in fruits have their own word (kärnor) whilst other seeds are called frön. Since I tend to think in English now and English only having one word for seeds I ended up using frön instead of kärnor...

As a fellow language enthusiast who happens to make their living as a professional 3D Animator (yes, it's the best job ever) I just enjoy the hell out of how much love Lamont has for The Spiderverse movies. (and Animation in general ♥♥♥) And he is correct btw. The amount of effort and skill put into making Into The Spiderverse is way above the norm. It literally made animation history and was regarded as THE modern masterpiece in the industry. Until Across the Spiderverse came out that is. Somehow the team at Sony Imageworks managed to surpass themselves. If anyone here happens to be interested in making movies (not just animation. just, movies. fullstop.) just watch and analyse the crap out of Across The Spiderverse. I'm not kidding. I'm senior enough to have become a teacher now too and this is one of the first things I tell my students. Its literally a masterclass in pretty much everything. just sayin... 🙃

With netflix of course you can download the movies and listen to the audio of the shows/movies. But it opened up a new world for me when I realized I could record the audio of shows/movies I watch on other streaming services of which I can't download onto my phone.

Pro tip for people who can't find the language in their country on Netflix and don't have a VPN,, if you switch your account language to the language you're learning, then it'll be an available option(you just need to have enough of the basics to still navigate with the account language switched),,, I'm in Canada and did it with Korean,, it works great Edit, he mentioned it a couple minutes later in the video, lol

I've seen the VPN thing mentioned so many times in videos, but haven't seen changing the account mentioned before, so I was actually pretty surprised and happy when I saw you mentioned it! (Also, I really like your videos, I love how you often come at things from a different angle than a lot of other language youtubers I've seen and tend to have original advice like this!)

I used Duolingo for one year and made it only 1/3 through Spanish. Locals were impressed with my level of Spanish. I can do about 30min to 45 min of small talk...if I tell them to speak slowly and in the tenses that I know. I've now added other resources but I find a retain vocab really well with Duo. Listening, not so much. I'm starting to do podcasts and dreaming Spanish for that. My texting ability is decent, I'm finding I have to translate a lot less. I tried using other methods, I didn't make it that far so for me, probably without duo I'd still know nothing. I'm probably not the person to be able to follow a jet plain for language. I guess I need to walk slowly for a long while before I have the confidence to try material that is a bit more demanding.

"Locals are impressed..." is a pretty standard perception of anyone who tries learning the language because a) they're just impressed that you tried at all and b) no one goes "LOL you suck... What did you use, an ineffective children's app?" Evan says locals were impressed with his German too which shows the meaningless of that statement because 5 years AFTER that, his German still isn't very impressive to any real language learners.

My mom immigrated to the US from Samoa and I spent much of my youth reading out my aunt's texts in Samoan to my mom while she was driving. I was never taught the language, but I heard my mom talk to her sisters in Samoan for hours every day. I'm now across the country and trying to learn the language on my own, and already knowing how to pronounce everything is definitely an advantage. Sometimes I'll read a common phrase and can hear my mom saying it in my head! Learning Samoan is mostly difficult because there aren't nearly as many resources out there, and most of the audio I hear now is from songs and MAYBE a Samoan radio station (I say maybe cus last time I tried listening, they were just playing American songs:( )

Great video as always!! I usually never comment on yt videos but i just need to now. Ive been trying Language Transfer, an amazing app which teaches u languages in a different way. It teaches languages using linguistic logic. Its been a real eye opener for me. This app is run by 1 person and is struggling to get the exposure it deserves. If you would try the app and give it some reach it would be truly amazing. Im afraid the app will eventually stop if it doesnt get the attention it deserves as its 100% free. Im not affiliated with them at all but just someone enjoying the app and i think you could have an interesting take on its method! ❤

A fair few people do know about it... I get several comments about it a month. I'm actually not a fan because a) it copies the Michel Thomas method and a lot of people don't realise that it's basically just that and b) in the first 10 minutes or something of listening to the German one, I didn't hear a single word of German.

yeah, i'm 20 and a man, and i fucking love Bluey 😂 it's honestly a very wholesome and funny show, and it's available in like a kajillion languages. the episodes are really short and i find them quite a good starting point for beginner stages of learning 😊

I like Duolingo and I do think that it has helped me learn German and I have seen improvement from using it. I am however in a unique position, as my wife is a first generation American born to German parents and my wife actually spoke German only until she started school and had to learn English and she taught her parents English. I also live in an area of South Alabama where MANY Germans lived and worked frequently during the 90s and I have a neighbor who recently moved here from Hamburg. I took German in highschool and I have and have had access to native German speakers and I have the advantage of having people to practice German with in my life. My wife and I have litterally spoken only in German when I stopped at the grocery store on the way home from work and I don't think I've ever had a single conversation in English with my German neighbor. For me, I just need a vocabulary and sentence structure app. I would be open to trying a better app now. I simply had nothing else to compare Duolingo to. For me it's been helpful, but I'd like to try any better option available. Thanks for this video. I just have nothing to compare Duolingo to, except for highschool German classes and German lessons on audio tapes. Yes, I'm old.

I speak 5 languages English ( nation I was raised ), French ( Dad ), Italian ( school/college/uni ), Polish ( mom ) and Korean ( work & fluent within 2 years ) and started to learn Japanese about 3 weeks ago due to clients. Before I learn a language I actually listen to and sing catchy kids songs and use it as a base to learn the language,so if you see some random guy humming a catchy kids song don't be too alarmed. I can actually sing baby shark in 12 languages but when doing it in Arabic or Norwegian it can be really poor, it's something I did for my child and regardless what language it's in she loves it.

Copying actual natural language actually helps a lot with remembering the language in context. Of course it doesn't really help you speak, but it's as import as actually using the language

I am learning Norwegian and had a heck of a time years ago on my own. I feel Duolingo has helped a lot. But I am also watching music videos, movies and connecting with Norwegians to immerse myself as much as I can. I don't remember much French from high school and college but I feel it was much easier than Norwegian. I would love more Norwegian resources.

I have not watched the entire video but just the first few minutes, to me she sounds like 95 to 99% like a native in those first few minutes. However I have a question to those who don’t agree that the person in this video sounds like a native at all: 1. What do you believe gives her away as far as accent is concerned? 2. If you don’t believe you can totally sound like a native if you have acquired the language late in life, would you agree that it is possible to learn to sound like one some of the time, in other words, for instance, 70% or 50% of the time in a conversation? This is just an example. Btw, D&W, you don't have to reply to this as I am really curious as to what those who don't think she sounds native really think. Thanks.

A lot of them mean well, but some of them are just out to show their "superiority". The reality is that 90% of even the ones who claim that she doesn't sound native would have no clue had they have not been told to begin with. It's just the like the people in 2010 who say "Oh I knew a recension was coming" - "Yeah, why didn't you short stocks then?" - "Oh well I'm more in... um... you know... business... and... um, oh look canapés!"

To respond to 24:40 , I'd argue if theres anyone who cares how long it takes to learn a language, it's the users of apps like duolingo. The apps advertise "bite sized" lessons. And that you can learn a language with 5-15 minutes of practice a day. Surely thats targeting the people looking for quick shortcuts

My 'into the spiderverse' was 'blue eyed samurai'. (Samurai de ojos azules) I'm not watching it 50 times, but it's been 3 times already and i know im gonna be rewatching it another few times at least. I just enjoy it a lot. (And by the way, I actually watched it with audio descripción too, so there's always a voice descibing everything thats happening. I first thought that might be too annoying but its super useful for learning more words and I like the voice they used)

As someone learning Swedish myself, i too did start with Duolingo, though i noticed very quickly the flaws of the app. Im already Bilingual being an Australian Vietnamese speaker. It was about 3 weeks in that i started with written sources such as learning books with audio guides that i really felt the learning was starting. A month into duolingo and i wouldnt even know the alphabet or why En and Ett are of different use. Its like a test where the answers are multiple choice and you kinda guess that it is because you know two of them are wrong kind of deal. Eitherway i do agree, duolingo is the slow, free and fun way, and real progression starts with proper sources

There are loads of movies i have seen more than 50 times. Sometimes, for example, ill put Aliens on and then immediately watch it again once it has finished. And ill do a double watch some times 4 days in a row. I watch them so much i know all the dialogue in the movies 😎

7:50 it has not improved. I got a free trial and was shocked at just how awful it was. I have 300mbps internet and yet pages took up to a minute to load. Even just idling on any page my computer fans would get really loud. When I hovered over the tab in chrome it says it uses a whopping 2gb. 2gb on what? low quality thumbnails? Its genuinely shocking how poor audibles website is. No one should ever buy that garbage.

I tried using other methods, I didn't make it that far so for me, probably without duo I'd still know nothing. I'm probably not the person to be able to follow a jet plain for language. I guess I need to walk slowly for a long while before I have the confidence to try material that is a bit more demanding.
"Locals are impressed..." is a pretty standard perception of anyone who tries learning the language because a) they're just impressed that you tried at all and b) no one goes "LOL you suck... What did you use, an ineffective children's app?" Evan says locals were impressed with his German too which shows the meaningless of that statement because 5 years AFTER that, his German still isn't very impressive to any real language learners.

Jag har läst boken och sett på serien... Serien är MYCKET bättre. Boken är faktiskt barnslig och irriterande. Backman borde hålla till gulliga böcker som "Britt-Marie var här" och sånt.
My mom immigrated to the US from Samoa and I spent much of my youth reading out my aunt's texts in Samoan to my mom while she was driving. I was never taught the language, but I heard my mom talk to her sisters in Samoan for hours every day. I'm now across the country and trying to learn the language on my own, and already knowing how to pronounce everything is definitely an advantage. Sometimes I'll read a common phrase and can hear my mom saying it in my head! Learning Samoan is mostly difficult because there aren't nearly as many resources out there, and most of the audio I hear now is from songs and MAYBE a Samoan radio station (I say maybe cus last time I tried listening, they were just playing American songs:( )

Great video as always!! I usually never comment on yt videos but i just need to now. Ive been trying Language Transfer, an amazing app which teaches u languages in a different way. It teaches languages using linguistic logic. Its been a real eye opener for me. This app is run by 1 person and is struggling to get the exposure it deserves. If you would try the app and give it some reach it would be truly amazing. Im afraid the app will eventually stop if it doesnt get the attention it deserves as its 100% free. Im not affiliated with them at all but just someone enjoying the app and i think you could have an interesting take on its method! ❤
A fair few people do know about it... I get several comments about it a month. I'm actually not a fan because a) it copies the Michel Thomas method and a lot of people don't realise that it's basically just that and b) in the first 10 minutes or something of listening to the German one, I didn't hear a single word of German.
people saying you can't watch something 50, 100 or even 1000 times have never met a child before! honestly, even as an adult, i've seen dinotasia almost forty times all the way through. if you like something enough, you'll be able to watch it until it's engrained in your memory forever.
yeah, i'm 20 and a man, and i fucking love Bluey 😂 it's honestly a very wholesome and funny show, and it's available in like a kajillion languages. the episodes are really short and i find them quite a good starting point for beginner stages of learning 😊
I watched Nyad in Spanish about 20 times and could watch it 20 times more, I absolutely love that film.
I like Duolingo and I do think that it has helped me learn German and I have seen improvement from using it. I am however in a unique position, as my wife is a first generation American born to German parents and my wife actually spoke German only until she started school and had to learn English and she taught her parents English. I also live in an area of South Alabama where MANY Germans lived and worked frequently during the 90s and I have a neighbor who recently moved here from Hamburg. I took German in highschool and I have and have had access to native German speakers and I have the advantage of having people to practice German with in my life. My wife and I have litterally spoken only in German when I stopped at the grocery store on the way home from work and I don't think I've ever had a single conversation in English with my German neighbor. For me, I just need a vocabulary and sentence structure app. I would be open to trying a better app now. I simply had nothing else to compare Duolingo to. For me it's been helpful, but I'd like to try any better option available. Thanks for this video. I just have nothing to compare Duolingo to, except for highschool German classes and German lessons on audio tapes. Yes, I'm old.

Grammar study is more important further into language learning. Thats why kids start with picture books and not grammar worksheets.

Apparently , Duolingo has just had a 45% surge in revenue. This is despite all those commentators claiming that you are unfairly destroying its reputation, with mean words.
Yeah it was when they got rid of the sentence discussions and replaced it with AI and charged the price of a small hatchback for it.
I speak 5 languages English ( nation I was raised ), French ( Dad ), Italian ( school/college/uni ), Polish ( mom ) and Korean ( work & fluent within 2 years ) and started to learn Japanese about 3 weeks ago due to clients. Before I learn a language I actually listen to and sing catchy kids songs and use it as a base to learn the language,so if you see some random guy humming a catchy kids song don't be too alarmed. I can actually sing baby shark in 12 languages but when doing it in Arabic or Norwegian it can be really poor, it's something I did for my child and regardless what language it's in she loves it.
A problem i come across is there is no cc subtitles so there is the same meaning in the audio and subtitles but different words used, which is very annoying when trying to learn a language (for me its italian), is there any fix to this? greetings from croatia,

Copying actual natural language actually helps a lot with remembering the language in context. Of course it doesn't really help you speak, but it's as import as actually using the language
I am learning Norwegian and had a heck of a time years ago on my own. I feel Duolingo has helped a lot. But I am also watching music videos, movies and connecting with Norwegians to immerse myself as much as I can. I don't remember much French from high school and college but I feel it was much easier than Norwegian. I would love more Norwegian resources.

I have not watched the entire video but just the first few minutes, to me she sounds like 95 to 99% like a native in those first few minutes. However I have a question to those who don’t agree that the person in this video sounds like a native at all: 1. What do you believe gives her away as far as accent is concerned? 2. If you don’t believe you can totally sound like a native if you have acquired the language late in life, would you agree that it is possible to learn to sound like one some of the time, in other words, for instance, 70% or 50% of the time in a conversation? This is just an example. Btw, D&W, you don't have to reply to this as I am really curious as to what those who don't think she sounds native really think. Thanks.

A lot of them mean well, but some of them are just out to show their "superiority". The reality is that 90% of even the ones who claim that she doesn't sound native would have no clue had they have not been told to begin with. It's just the like the people in 2010 who say "Oh I knew a recension was coming" - "Yeah, why didn't you short stocks then?" - "Oh well I'm more in... um... you know... business... and... um, oh look canapés!"
To respond to 24:40 , I'd argue if theres anyone who cares how long it takes to learn a language, it's the users of apps like duolingo. The apps advertise "bite sized" lessons. And that you can learn a language with 5-15 minutes of practice a day. Surely thats targeting the people looking for quick shortcuts
My 'into the spiderverse' was 'blue eyed samurai'. (Samurai de ojos azules) I'm not watching it 50 times, but it's been 3 times already and i know im gonna be rewatching it another few times at least. I just enjoy it a lot. (And by the way, I actually watched it with audio descripción too, so there's always a voice descibing everything thats happening. I first thought that might be too annoying but its super useful for learning more words and I like the voice they used)
As someone learning Swedish myself, i too did start with Duolingo, though i noticed very quickly the flaws of the app. Im already Bilingual being an Australian Vietnamese speaker. It was about 3 weeks in that i started with written sources such as learning books with audio guides that i really felt the learning was starting. A month into duolingo and i wouldnt even know the alphabet or why En and Ett are of different use. Its like a test where the answers are multiple choice and you kinda guess that it is because you know two of them are wrong kind of deal. Eitherway i do agree, duolingo is the slow, free and fun way, and real progression starts with proper sources

There are loads of movies i have seen more than 50 times. Sometimes, for example, ill put Aliens on and then immediately watch it again once it has finished. And ill do a double watch some times 4 days in a row. I watch them so much i know all the dialogue in the movies 😎

7:50 it has not improved. I got a free trial and was shocked at just how awful it was. I have 300mbps internet and yet pages took up to a minute to load. Even just idling on any page my computer fans would get really loud. When I hovered over the tab in chrome it says it uses a whopping 2gb. 2gb on what? low quality thumbnails? Its genuinely shocking how poor audibles website is. No one should ever buy that garbage.
