OK if you've reached the end of the description then you're here for the question. I have a few but first I'll ask you to tell me what you think of my holding the mic in this video. (Imagine that there is no change in audio quality.) What do you think of the "feel" of my holding it rather than it being discreetly off-screen?
What airline did I (by implication) fly from Auckland to the USA with?
What's the reference about going into the tree and coming out in 1990?
What is Felix's robotics team number?

One of the pros of living in Australia is that you can go to San Francisco without losing more than one sec of your day on travelling!
@daysandwords

If it weren't for the stop in NZ, we'd have actually gained about 5 hours, and if we did it in our summer, we'd gain 7! We lost literally a day coming back, and it was Australia's most cherished day haha (Anzac Day).
Sorry you felt unwell, I’m glad you got to do some of the things you planned!
The legend is back!!
Oh man sounds like you got the full experience! Can't wait to hear about the rest of it. I'm really curious about how comfortable you were able to get in Spanish in such a short time.
You just absolutely made my day! I love travelogues a lot more than traveling and, of course, yours provided laughter too! That's something a little harder to do while traveling. True on the coffee. There is no help for that.
Sorry to hear that you guys were sick and that your son missed one of the competitions, but glad that it you had fun. Love the digs at american coffee.
Wow. Glad you’re still alive after all that 😅. Looking forward to hearing about Mexico!
Good coffee is very difficult to find here in the States. It took me years to be able to drink black coffee at home, because all of it was always so bad. I mostly drink espresso at home using my (Australian!) Breville Barista Express. Even then it can be hard to find worthy whole beans.
Sounds like a rollercoaster of things going right and wrong.
Hell yeah! Congrats on the Impact Award, especially at Silicon Valley regional, which is definitely one of the tougher regionals to do well at. Sorry you missed the event because of the bug (probably RSV, caught that at the regional I was judging at last month -- East Coast US not West).
@Legorreta.M.D

But RSV has an incubation period of 4-6 days, so if it was RSV, that means he got exposed to it before he landed in the US. Unless of course I misremember how many days he was in the US before experiencing symptoms.

muffiland didn't comment on where they thought I got it... They were saying that THEY themselves caught it at a competition that they were judging. I probably did get whatever it was on the plane... it was 3-4 days after the plane that I started feeling dodgy. (4 if starting from the start of the plane trip.)
US coffee catching strays! Great vid! Can't wait to hear more about your trip!
Estoy emocionado por escuchar tus cuentos de Mexico, es una lastima que estabas enfermo en California, pero me parece al menos tuviste una aventura en Mexico :)
coffee is so watery in the US, most Europeans do not like it either but I do 😂 It is a pity you got sick, but nice you still got to enjoy your trip. So cool that you met Mr. Salas, I can't wait to see your next videos 😁

Wow mate you were like Mick Dundee there in the USA😄
Your coffee comment is really bizarre. There is so much great coffee in SF. I live here and have traveled to lots of other countries and have not found better coffee anywhere. So I am very curious to hear where you went for coffee or what you consider "good". Anyway, sounds like a great adventure and I'm looking forward to more videos. Next time you come to SF, happy to take you to coffee. Cheers.

The problem is the terminology, and the consistency. Terminology: what Australians call coffee OR espresso, Americans call "espresso", and what Americans call coffee (out of a pot or a drip or whatever) is not available here except in people's houses, and even then we jokingly call it poo-water (I'm not joking about calling it that.) Also, most houses don't have that anymore. Coffee snobs own an espresso machine, or go to a cafe that is walking distance away. Consistency as in, going to a random cafe and getting a good cup of coffee... it felt unlikely after about the 4th attempt. I actually FINALLY found somewhere in Houston. So I understand that my experience is EXTREMELY limited (I didn't even visit 1% of cafés in San Jose, letalone California), but in my experience, 100% of cafes in California can't make a decent coffee, whereas 50% of them in Texas can. 😆 This article actually sums it up quite well: www.brisbanetimes.com.au/traveller/inspiration/australian-coffee-is-the-best-in-the-world-20150730-ginqk2.html BTW, I never actually had a coffee in SF - that day was just bridge, street cars, and back to San Jose. But I'll take you up on your offer. 😉
I have to say, non of the robotics competitions I went to in highschool were this crazy.

Huh, you were walking distance from me when you were at SJSU. And light-years away from me health-wise, from the sounds of it. I did see at least one team wheeling carts full of robotics stuff out of the apartments across the street from me at least twice. It never occurred to me that that was your event. Unsure what the coffee problem was -- mine's great. Sounds the Starbuck's mafia got you "grande". But it was probably good practice for getting fleeced in Mexico, and we know how important practice is.
@daysandwords

man, you really carried some bad luck with you to the states I think. First, ive heard Australian coffee is really good. However, that's a bummer you didn't like the coffee in San Francisco. It's honestly probably the best city for coffee in the USA hahah. Not sure San Jose can say the same though. Also ive been to Mexico at least 20 times, never ever any issues. So it's really weird you had such a troubling experience.

Nah I never had coffee in SF. San Jose COULD have been fine but there is a nation wide misunderstanding of what constitutes a shot of coffee. Houston actually KILLED California in the coffee game... maybe just because everything in bigger in Texas, including coffee shots? 😂 But yes, Aus and NZ coffee is world leading.

@@daysandwords@lamontmcleod agreed. as a nation the USA doesn't quite get how to make good coffee, agreed. Its more about mass consumption like everything here sadly. However, select cities with an understanding of coffee culture and its ability to be artisanal really get it. You do have to hunt around and read reviews but most dont have time for that. As in Texas? Honestly I didn't see enough of anywhere to make a judgement. Houston itself was pretty boring but nevertheless I'm an Astros fan now, and I did find a café so nice that I want to go back just for that (the coffee was fine but it was the ambience that did it). SF is probably great but I'd need more than one day the day after getting off the plane to judge properly. I felt it was the people who made both states enjoyable. Basically everyone who served me anything (coffee or anything else) was super cool.

Yes, correct on all counts! I have edited about an hour of finalised video time now (that's about 4 hours of actual footage), and I still like it... we'll see what some other people think, thanks for the feedback!
Sad about the sickness and the coffee!!! San Francisco / California has AMAZING WORLD CLASS coffee, but mixed in are places and hotels with terrible coffee. So sorry you did not get any of the hand roasted artisan-crafted coffee! Next time, make sure it is small batch roasted, like at Blue Bottle and Philz and Peets and more! Places use cheap non-specialty grade coffee (ie coffee that makes poor farmers poorer, another story about the market down-bid ways of cheap coffee brands / market pressure for cheap volume over quality) as a profit channel, avoid these places.

@@paulwalther5237 Burnt roasts. Basically if you roast the beans too much, it has a levelling effect: it conceals the nastier flavors of poor quality beans, but at the same time it snuffs out the richer nuances of good quality beans. I've never tried roasting Starbucks beans on my own so dunno whether they're any good or not. Just that when they do it, it's always over-roasted. Less of a problem if you cut it with any of their "milkshake" options, but for straight black coffee it's not great IMHO. Anyway not dissing your tastes or anything. I was just joking around even though it's true that personally I don't like their coffee.

Starbucks only existed in Australia for a short time because on every corner there was a superior café at a lower price. Basically, Australians are to coffee as the Swiss/Germans are to trains. We can't believe the rest of the world puts up with such a low standard haha.

@@bofbob1Yeah I'm not even a coffee snob by Australian standards, I have it with MILK - but my problem with Starbucks and a bunch of places I went was that it was WAY TOO WEAK. Like, here in Aus, as the size goes up, so does the amount of espresso. But at most places in the USA, they seemed to just add more milk??? So at one place I asked for a TRIPLE espresso + milk in a medium cup and it just tasted normal to me, except that they still didn't steam the milk properly and because of the "triple" (tasted like a double at best to me), it was $8!!!! That's $12 AU, that's enough for THREE of the same drink (but better) here. Wild.
