there is actually a language, Pirahã, which lacks numbers and I dont think linguists ever asked what resources (what adverbs, for instance) would need to be added to this language so that it would end up having numbers. This is, I think, a very interesting research programme for linguistics.

Having watched up to your lectures on Russell: Given this really excellent introduction and your explanation that analytic philosophy is a kind of 'rebellion' against the post-Kantian/post-Hegelian understanding of the relation between mind and world as a 'hall of mirrors', so to speak, I was expecting a stronger criticism of that tradition. I don't see how you can go from Kant to proposing something like the correspondence theory of truth - it's just a regression into naive metaphysics, as far as I can tell. Am I wrong about that? What's the catch here? Would be very thankful for a response.

Great lecture. I've been working on this very problem for a few years now as my master's thesis. Here is the best "straight" solution I have come with so far: First, let's realize that our criteria of correctness is not dependent at all on our past usage, and only counterfactually so on our future usage. Let's call this epistemical position the "eternal present hypothesis". In other words, we can only evaluate our past hypothesis in the light of our present understanding, and the way we presently represent that past hypothesis. Which means, there can be nothing meaningful to be said about us meaning "blue" instead of "grue" in the past, yet our present understanding informs us for all possible pragmatic purposes. In other words, us meaning "blue" in the present is all that could possibly matter pragmatically, when it comes to past and present usages of the term. Now, what is left to account for is the possibility that we will mean "grue" instead of "blue" in the future; that we will mean "quaddition" instead of "addition". And here, I would simply ask if that matters as long as your present answer gets the job done. And if you consider it does so, you have no reason to reevaluate your assessment. Indeed, there is no guarantee that your present assessment will carry onto the future. Yet, if you consider your present assessment to be legitimate, and your future assessment is confirming the one you have now, there is nothing more you can do. All you can do is trust in the process, which is a fairly sobering conclusion. Yet I have yet to find a way around it.

I will never see the categories as innate. Kant didn’t. It’s the wrong way to look at deconstructing experience in general. When you deconstruct experience you find a priori concepts. A priori does not mean innate. It means they are necessary for experience to be possible at all for us. It doesn’t mean “before” in the temporal sense, as if the categories existed in the brain of an infant before its first experience. That would be an empirical notion. A priori for Kant is intended in the transcendental sense. It’s very common for non-German professors to get this wrong because of the emphasis of the empirical over all else in their training.

While being a fan of Gödel, I found a way to make his proof fall apart. 1) Being a Sacrifice is Not a Positive thing; whereas NOT a Sacrifice is. 2) Christ has the God Property. 3) God Properties are Exclusively Positive Properties. 4) Christ is a Sacrifice. Therefore: 1) Christ has a Negative Property. 2) Ergo, 3) is False and 2) is False. . . . and the Proof unravels. there is actually a language, Pirahã, which lacks numbers and I dont think linguists ever asked what resources (what adverbs, for instance) would need to be added to this language so that it would end up having numbers. This is, I think, a very interesting research programme for linguistics.

Having watched up to your lectures on Russell: Given this really excellent introduction and your explanation that analytic philosophy is a kind of 'rebellion' against the post-Kantian/post-Hegelian understanding of the relation between mind and world as a 'hall of mirrors', so to speak, I was expecting a stronger criticism of that tradition. I don't see how you can go from Kant to proposing something like the correspondence theory of truth - it's just a regression into naive metaphysics, as far as I can tell. Am I wrong about that? What's the catch here? Would be very thankful for a response.

Great lecture. I've been working on this very problem for a few years now as my master's thesis. Here is the best "straight" solution I have come with so far: First, let's realize that our criteria of correctness is not dependent at all on our past usage, and only counterfactually so on our future usage. Let's call this epistemical position the "eternal present hypothesis". In other words, we can only evaluate our past hypothesis in the light of our present understanding, and the way we presently represent that past hypothesis. Which means, there can be nothing meaningful to be said about us meaning "blue" instead of "grue" in the past, yet our present understanding informs us for all possible pragmatic purposes. In other words, us meaning "blue" in the present is all that could possibly matter pragmatically, when it comes to past and present usages of the term. Now, what is left to account for is the possibility that we will mean "grue" instead of "blue" in the future; that we will mean "quaddition" instead of "addition". And here, I would simply ask if that matters as long as your present answer gets the job done. And if you consider it does so, you have no reason to reevaluate your assessment. Indeed, there is no guarantee that your present assessment will carry onto the future. Yet, if you consider your present assessment to be legitimate, and your future assessment is confirming the one you have now, there is nothing more you can do. All you can do is trust in the process, which is a fairly sobering conclusion. Yet I have yet to find a way around it.

I will never see the categories as innate. Kant didn’t. It’s the wrong way to look at deconstructing experience in general. When you deconstruct experience you find a priori concepts. A priori does not mean innate. It means they are necessary for experience to be possible at all for us. It doesn’t mean “before” in the temporal sense, as if the categories existed in the brain of an infant before its first experience. That would be an empirical notion. A priori for Kant is intended in the transcendental sense. It’s very common for non-German professors to get this wrong because of the emphasis of the empirical over all else in their training.

While being a fan of Gödel, I found a way to make his proof fall apart. 1) Being a Sacrifice is Not a Positive thing; whereas NOT a Sacrifice is. 2) Christ has the God Property. 3) God Properties are Exclusively Positive Properties. 4) Christ is a Sacrifice. Therefore: 1) Christ has a Negative Property. 2) Ergo, 3) is False and 2) is False. . . . and the Proof unravels. Nevertheless, since God is the Most Self-Referential Thing in the Universe, these Contradictions are really Paradoxes. not Contradictions.

If "green ideas sleep furiously" is meaningless then why does "there are green ideas that sleep furiously" sound false and not just meaningless? Perhaps it is not about meaninglessness so much as it is about the sentence forcing you to make a presupposition that you know is false.
