    This is a very optimistic video for a need ship that I don't think has even let port yet. I sure hope that I'm wrong, and I know almost nothing about war ships, but it seems to me that a whole lot of unexpected "bugs" and design flaws are still possible after the ship actually goes to sea, and during the trials that I assume it will the subjected to. With that said, I sure hope to live long enough to see Canada's RCN equipped AND setting to sea in the ships that our serving members so richly deserve to be working on. And that Canada will still have an economy that can afford to buy all 15 of the ships that the current government has promised to buy. Which MIGHT be a problem if they are going to buy the 12 NEW submarines that the current government of Canada so suddenly decided Canada desperately needs too.

    Our entire military is what? 6000 personnel? Takes 3500 to operate a US Aircraft carrier, can fit our entire armed forces in 2 US Aircraft carriers. Our military is a joke, even more so now with this "DEI" policy in place so now our frontline soldiers are 120lbs potential victims. 15 Frigates would disappear within a couple days of use in a World War. We've got what? 1 operational sub? On top of that, what are they defending? Canada has no borders, we're going to have more muslims and folks from India than the very population that built the country in the next 10-20 years. We're not even a "country", we're.. well like the Libs said, a "Bus station". So what is Canada? Just an open plot of land for anyone and everyone to buy out the houses and properties? So as long as you pretend men can get pregnant and put women above all else, you can stay? Canada is a tiny confused kitten, it hasn't 1 single sharp tooth. It'll jail its own, it'll euthanize its own, it'll take and take and take from its own giving nothing in return, it'll take your freedom of speech, your freedom of expression, it'll compel you to speak a certain way against protected classes of people, it'll take you down long before it ever harms a fly outside of its own land. 15 Frigates what a joke. Half of them are going to sit on dry dock until we have enough 120lbs black/white female instagram models operating them as captains.

    We need a lot more than just 15 frigates. We desperately need military ships, but we also desperately need a huge upgrade to our icebreaker fleet. Russia and China are going to take over the arctic to our north, and they actually have the necessary ships to do so. Our air force is pretty embarrassing as well. Hopefully this ship ends up actually being as advertised.

    15 ships: good. And they do look more capable than previous stuff. ANY previous stuff since WW2. But NONE of these frigates will be Arctic-capable. It'll have a few anti-anti-ship missiles. But no weapons that can counter drones: air, surface or sub-surface drones. If we've learned anything from the Ukraine War, these things will be very much at risk of assault by drones. They DO look to be pretty well-equipped. But they should be packed with a lot of anti-drone gear & undersea drones of their own to deal with the huge network of deep-sea mines being laid by China in preparation of it's coming invasion of Taiwan. Buying Frigates as opposed to Destroyers probably made sense. The most effective stuff in current wars is small, cheap & VERY hard to stop. The US Navy is attempting to counter this with lots of cross-support from nearby ships with overlapping tasks & capabilities. Ours will be flying solo unless they're ganged up with US or NATO fleets. And Canada REALLY does have to figure out how to patrol & interdict in the Arctic. They won't be doing that with these ships. We need a couple of Arctic-capable frigates or something slightly smaller - but with ice-breaking credibility. Either that or we need to be buying a few of the nuclear subs Australia's getting. Canada's military spend HAS to increase, dramatically - and soon. We're not facing threats of future conflict: we're facing that conflict NOW, or next year. We had time to scale up in WW2. Today's conflicts don't give you a few years to scale up. We should *double* our defense spending immediately.

    The DeWolf Class AOPVs were very over-priced. They are based on the Norwegian Svalbard which cost Norway $100 Million to design. Yet, somehow, after buying the plans, it cost Canada another $294 Million to redesign the ship into an AOPV? And while it only cost the Norwegians $126 Million to build Svalbard, it’s somehow costing Canada $720 Million to build each DeWolf? 5.7 times the cost! Why do Canadians put up with this enormous waste of our tax dollars?

  • @NCMA29
    @NCMA298 күн бұрын

    Well, it's now 2024, so no chance that they'll even lay down the keel of the first of these Type 26s by 2026. Although you are avoiding the topic - these ships have an ENORMOUSLY INFLATED COST! My God... Our Type 26s will cost so much more if one compares the price to the Scottish shipyards (you know, those paragons of ship-building efficiency) where the first Type 26 frigates are being built. I don't know why that tiny $60 Billion price tag keeps popping up, because back in 2021 the price was upped to $77.3 Billion, which is no doubt far smaller than the current estimated cost in 2024. The price for the RNs eight ships was only $14 Billion (so $26.25 Billion for fifteen, if they were building that many). So, we are going to pay over $50 Billion extra, just to have them "made in Canada". And as there will only be a paltry estimated 15 000 jobs created, to put it into perspective, we could pay $1 Million to each and every employee as a consolation for not getting the job if we built them in Scotland, and Canada would still save over $35 BILLION!! Put another way, the RN's Type 26s will cost the British only $1.75 Billion per ship, while the RCN Types 26s will cost Canada $5.15 BILLION PER SHIP! And why the hell aren't we buying the Type 31 instead? Sure, they're not as capable, but THEY"RE LESS THAN HALF THE PRICE of the Type 26. As usual, Canada has champagne tastes on a beer budget. Then there’re the new JSSs, which are just glorified AORs given that they’re based on the Berlin Class AOR. The project to replace the old AORs began way back in 2014 - ten years ago! The RN needed new AORs at the same time, but decided it was more cost efficient to build them in South Korea; the Tide Class. What they got were 37,000 ton ships, built at $237.5 Million per ship (no cost overruns) and although delivered a few months late, all four are now in commission and have been serving the RN for several years now. Our Berlins are about half the size at 20,240 tons, will likely not be in commission until 2030 (16 years after starting the process) and at the last estimate were going to cost $2.1 Billion per ship, though the cost is likely far higher now in 2024. Short of having gold-plated bulkheads and crystal chandeliers in the messes, how can this enormous cost be justified in ANY way? That’s essentially EIGHTEEN TIMES more expensive than what the British are paying (taking in account cost and displacement), just to build them in Canada. Norway saw how inexpensive the Tides were and bought one for their own Navy for only $250 Million, and the RNZN had one built with many specialisations to tailor it to their fleet - and it still came in under $300 Million. Even the DeWolf Class AOPVs were very over-priced. Does anybody see a pattern here? Is it just me, or is our government - every federal government, whether conservative or liberal - insane? They've been trying to "revitalise" the Canadian shipbuilding industry for close on forty years. But who in their right mind would pay ten times as much for a vessel built in Canada, that takes three times as long to build? Only our government. The Canadian shipbuilding industry is a corpse that only has a pulse because of the enormously expensive life support that keeps being pumped into it - at taxpayer expense. It’s an utterly outrageous waste of tax dollars, yet very few Canadians seem to be aware of it - or care.

    I was a kid, and Dad was serving on the HMCS Terra Nova when the Halifax class was the new ship. Dad often talked about getting the then newest ship HMCS Athabaskan as his first ship in the late 70's. So to think of the Halifax class being the now aging class of ship is unreal to me. Dad never served on a Halifax class, as he was a purple trade, and got posted in land. Meaning that there is no ship still afloat that my father served on.

    We need these vessels badly; however these ships will never be completed under the current Liberal government. They have proven time and time again that they are incapable of completing any project on time and on budget. We still don't have the F35's to replace our obsolete CF18's. A 7.5 billion $ pipeline took 7 years to complete at a cost of 35 billion $.

    I remember reading Irving was asking for more money to hire offshore even though part of the deal was canadian workers. I think Davie should have been in the mix. Look what they did with Astirix. (and they were ready to convert her sister). Instead of being pleased with the initiative the tried to hang Norman. Glad to hear these ships are getting a 5" gun. Something we lost with TRUMP. I can't see the timeline though, last ones in the 2050s? Fraser (3) will be paying off (almost) when her last sister comes on line. The idea of building in Canada is noble but I don't think it works well for how we build. It's been about 1/4 century since the CPFs were built and no work building to keep skill sets alive. It would be cheaper to buy the whole ship offshore AND give the workers pogey. Someone in the comments mentioned Assiniboine. Poor old Bones was tired by the time 1988 rolled around. We have a habit of keeping equipment far too long. Continuous building might solve that. One of my favourite class of ships were the Leanders. Built in batches enough commonality but also differences to meet new threats. 4.5" - Exocet - Ikara. Sea Cat - Sea Wolf. Built over 13 years.
