Park Avenue Armory's mission is to revitalize one of America's historic treasures as a dynamic alternative arts space unlike any other in New York. Part palace, part industrial shed, the Armory is dedicated to the development and presentation of work in the visual and performing arts best realized in a non-traditional setting.

Wish I could see this, one of the best albums of all time
Magnificent conversation. Thank you for sharing the Light! Licht!
Where can I watch this
Any recording available anywhere? ❤
I just saw this last week in New York at the St. James. Or rather, had the privilege of experiencing. It took me a few years to warm up to Sufjan's music. But over time his poetry became decidedly infectious and endearing, at least for me. And 20 years after his delightful epic album ILLINOIS, I was naturally compelled to see the Broadway adaptation, keenly crafted/produced by the very talented choreographer Justin Peck. It is a magical, emotion-filled journey that winds its way through the hearts of the audience. The pain of loss, the joy of love, the satisfaction of friendships, the confusion of growing up. My eyes were wet and I could hear tissues being used all around me. Yet everyone was smiling! How can something be so whimsical and forceful at the same time? There is no spoken dialogue, just the songs themselves, performed by excellent vocalists and a really fantastic live band. The dancing is exhilarating! Craftspersons of intense musicality, all the dancers are thrilling. Peck is the new Jerome Robbins, in my humble opinion. A celebration of life itself, during these difficult times. I only wish I could see it again and again... In conclusion: don't miss this.
Putting the combined creative genius of Claus Guth, Helmut Deutsch and Jonas Kaufmann together to illustrate the transformational journey between life survival and death, using just Schibert lieder, could only result in one thing - an outstanding performance of dramatic emotion and sensitivity. Oh why is this not available on dvd? It is frustrating not being able to see such an intriguing production.
Excellent
I cried the whole show
An acid voyage made of side trips with endings, depositing you on Park Avenue.
😅
Will it be available on youtube?
I thought it was abrasively corny and maudlin. Why fuck up a good album's legacy with this kind of bullshit?
One of my favorites is predatory wasp, seers tower, or Casimir Pulaski. Those songs are some of the most emotional ones but the story they are telling is something they will always be special and make me feel really connected to the characters and their stories. Also, watching them dance out these songs adds to the realness of the songs and makes me love them even more.
Is there a DVD of "Yerma" available?
Wow
in the my personal opinion, the following: its so funny that this 'grandious' pretentious 'endeavor' by a clown who ventures way outside his own skill, knowledge, training, and capacity, and even tries to solicit (more like exploit, in my opinion, is what this 'artist' does in the false rationale of 'relational aesthetics' otherwise known as attempts at justified plagiarism of the notable work of others to inject oneself into it to try to ride on the coattails of others as a career method) the skills of a 'professional', neither of which possessed the technical experience and expertise, still fails at the whole 'midi' replay (more like regurgitation) of the performance. this is almost as bad as a grandiose and miserably failed smpte time code 'mishap' live performance whereby a fancy polish orchestra fails to sync to a live orchestral soundtrack performance to a film by many seconds, like 30 seconds or so? i dont know, but it was long enough for the audience to notice and tell douglas that it was still a good performance in spite of that, which was only partially or 'half' true. so funny. maybe people should stick to tattoos and masking tape on their face and adolescent pyromania 'artworks', as that seems to be what they actually know. its the 'professional' art world and pretension like this that makes me extra glad that while an art 'student' i refused a request by an 'art star' associated with the 'network', to be a drug mule to transport 10,000 euros of cocaine to a northern german arts festival, presumably to schmooze and intoxicate the patrons so they are bamboozled into not realizing the festival artwork is wasted on immature self indulgent narratives.

He barely got into the specifics of what Arthur actually did to break up the spoils system. Listen to all the sheep clap just because he threw in some Obama praise and Trump barbs in front of a crowd of NYC oligarchs, though. Did he even reference the Pendleton Reform Act? I might have missed it amidst all that claptrap. What a hack. Fast forward 5-6 years from the date of this lecture, my city is a disaster with more law-abiding, tax-paying citizens disgruntled and fearful due to the crime and decay caused by the tone and policies of Biden, de Blasio, Adams, and Bragg. The faux-intellectual circle jerk of the moneyed and intelligentsia classes continues, though-their heads firmly inserted up their rear ends-pretending White supremacy is the number one problem plaguing the U.S. in 2024 🙄
Come to LA 🎉
Come to LA please 🎉
Is this show going to be recorded and anywhere on the internet? I'd give anything to see it. Always imagined the album as a musical because it's so grand and now that the album has been turned intto an actual musical i can't see it.
Great talk; makes the production even more meaningful to hear the background of how it came to be. So looking forward to seeing it again on Broadway in the summer!
I've long been a fan of Sufjan Stevens and I have a deep love of this album. Even going in with that level of appreciation, I was still blown away but how stunningly beautiful this performance was. Absolutely one of the most beautiful things I've ever seen.
Saw it in Chicago last month and would love love love to see it again someday. Truly special.
Extend this show 🤘🎉 it is so moving and an emotional feast
My wife saw the play in Chicago and we are both looking forward to see the show in New York City next week.
Broadway, please. And/or film it for streaming someday; maybe even in Apple TV’s new Immersive format. 🎉
Saw the last two performances in Chicago. Left salty… as in my tears kept flowing - it wasn’t worth trying to wipe them away! It’s an incredible piece, with fantastic arrangements and vocals, a beautiful and heartbreaking story, all told through imaginative movement by a phenomenal cast. I hope it moves to Broadway so I can witness it again. 🙌 Justin, Jackie, the rest of the creative team and cast deserve all the standing o’s and accolades. I hope Sufjan gets to see it, and I hope it’s preserved on film too! 🙏
can't wait. going next week.
Why does every academic have to mention black people and kiss their asses😡 this is a lecture about chester authur and this dude has to mention evil white people and some Rosa parks of the gilded era. Feck off👌
The most beautiful piece of art I have ever seen.
Absolutely Marvelous. Thank you for this wonderful talk.
I would love to see this!!
Not that I want the few remaining tickets to be taken up when I'm trying to figure out a way to get out to NYC to see it at Park Ave Armory, but saw the last couple of performances in Chicago, and was a in a puddle of tears by the end; just couldn't hold it in as much as I tried. What a wonderfully moving piece told through dance, music, acting. Was always a fan of Peck's work, and of Sufjan's from Call Me By Your Name. So happy to see dancers I've followed for years now with amazing careers -- Ricky, Ben, Robbie, Craig, and newer dancers whose careers will skyrocket. Let's hope there's a Broadway transfer, or a filmed version, as it'd be great to view multiple times to see the detail and bigger picture from different perspectives.
I've seen this show three times (twice this past summer at their run at Bard College and a week ago in Chicago) and can honestly say I have never seen a show with the power and impact of Illinoiose. It is a truly unique experience - it is a dance performance with no dialogue, but has a story that is moving, deeply emotional and uplifting. The music is exceptional, the dancers are extraordinary - moving and expressive - the story is heartbreaking and funny and fun - but that doesn't do justice to the experience of this performance. In much the same way that you can't really explain why art of any kind moves you as much as it does, this show defies my ability to adequately convey how incredible it is. Go and see this.
Just saw it tonight in Chicago. It was fantastic.
I saw this in Chicago at the Shakepeare Theatre's Yard. Incredibly moving; unlike anything I've seen in a long time. The audience was on their feet!
Im so far away from this!!! I need a recording so badly
You guys!
This looks amazing!! I cannot wait! ❤
I'm so excited to see this for the second time! So beautiful and moving.❤
damn this looks horrible... corny...
One of my favorite albums, I honestly agree 😂
A little too gay for me. I do love the record tho
@@haikat4The gayer the better
To each their own, but not the type of dancing I envisioned for this amazing album
@@haikat4 Well have I got news for you, champ
Jagged Little Pill
Sounds wonderful. Wish I had been able to see it in NY!
Thank you so much for this generative offering and discussion. Very much enjoyed each of the narratives presented in this panel, and hope that continued dialogue around constellations of Blackness can be shared with the spirit of curiosity, compassion, and a willingness to learn from that which especially, we either feel an aversion or a disconnection to. Love the question from 'Queen' about the healing properties of sound, which leans into several disciplines that also (and already) are a part of our mundane, creative, and spiritual practices.... and the comment about DNA and Blackness from Jojo Abot. YES.
Mr Marrone, what a superb, and fascinating lecture you have given us; I thank you so very much. I have been fascinated by Edith Wharton all my adult life, and your wonderful commentary only brings Ms Wharton closer to me, and enlightens she and her life and work further than I could have ever dreamed. I applaud you! Best Regards, Beth
This guy, Robert Icke, sounds like a pretentious fraud, zero talent as a playwright and the play utterly dry and boring.
