Goodford Model Railway

Goodford Model Railway

A return to the hobby of Railway modelling after around 20 years has invoked the creation of a fictitious location on the GWR, namely - Goodford. These OO gauge modern image model railway videos feature diesel locomotives and rolling stock mainly from around the year 2020.

After a house move and a dedicated model railway room measuring 20’ x 12' was commandeered in late 2020, Goodford MK3 was created. This was my first experience of a layout this size and many mistakes were realised so in 2023 Goodford MK4 took it’s place and whilst this overcame some of the issues, after 6 months it was clear the operational scope was too limited so in 2024 Goodford MK5 was created. The aim is to “finish” this layout in 1 year! The layouts are all DCC, operated with a Roco Z21 via an iPad with all locos being with DCC sound fitted.

This is purely a hobby and for fun, hope you enjoy the channel!

    Hornby have had the model in for repair for over 28 days now and the only contact i have had with them was when i contacted them and they stated that it was still being worked on. Due to the length of time and lack of update/contact, i have reached out to the reseller to ask for a full refund. Based on this experience, I will not be buying any more Hornby stock.

    Just bought the R3967 5 car pack reduced to £375 was £502.49 brand new. Had ten in stock, now 8 left (13/7/24). Runs very well both directions. I might lubricate the wheels though. All headlights and tail lights work on both dummy and power cars. Only little issue I have is intermittent lighting in two of the coaches, the rest of the coaches are fine.

    @@karlhudson1740 great deal, I think it’s only the extra 4 coach pack which seems to have the issue which causes the drag. 5 cars should be fine but can never hurt to lightly lubricate the axles to reduce strain on the motor 👍

    The headlights and top light are on Function Output 1 of the decoder (with youchoos sound project - F12 on the controller) Function Output 2 turns off the tail lights (F6). So that is one problem solved for you. What sound project have you got in yours??

    @@GoodfordModelRailway to be honest probably like the old HST problem, sell it as a few coaches and power car, then you buy extra and end up having to make up a custom two driven power car solution to get a prototypical long rake to really work. Which other sets do you have? I have a couple of the GWR 800 sets (5 car) and thankfully they have never had the same issues. When paying this much money you shouldn’t have to give them a nudge to get them going, such a shame that we have to accept these substandard products. Hopefully some of the relatively new manufacturers will start to breach the DMU/EMU/HST space soon.

    I have 2 GWR, LNER and experimental. Everything runs fine on my layout except these sometimes and some HSTs. Again they want a push and I have to clean the track even thou I keep it clean. I am no fan of Hornby. I have bought their products since 1977 and 2022 and 2023 were the first years that I bought nothing of theirs. I have said this for years but if you look on the back of the Hornby boxes you will see the white sticker from China. SK was Sandakan and the Merchant Navies and LNER teak coaches came from there as well as loads of others. They were amazing and there were NEVER any issues. Then they moved. Ever since they moved production from there the standard has dropped. Just watch that ridiculous programme they did and you see what a bunch of cowboys they are. Montana and Simon were just laughable and clueless. This has transferred to their products and they need a massive shake up. Hornby are being left behind and I do not think they will last long at this rate.

    Does every coach roll equally well down that piece of track if you hand pushed them? It might identify if there is an area of track or a particular coach creating an issue.

  • @GoodfordModelRailway
    @GoodfordModelRailwayАй бұрын

    The problem occurs on all parts of the layout. Each coach has had the axles lubricated, which did significantly reduce the problem (when first received the drag would pull the train to a stop even after helping it get going!). Each coach runs freely however I believe it is due to the sheer number of coaches, which all have 1 bogie with pickups for the internal lights touching the wheels.

  • @NewModelRailway1
    @NewModelRailway1Ай бұрын

    @@GoodfordModelRailway I did notice those pickups on the other guy's coaches who had the same problem. That many pickups acting against the axles does look like a recipe for disaster. Can the tension on them be reduced a little?

  • @GoodfordModelRailway
    @GoodfordModelRailwayАй бұрын

    @@NewModelRailway1good idea, potentially one side could be bent away from one of the axels, so you are down to a single axle pick up for the internal lights. I will wait and see how Hornby fix the issue and post an update based on the results 👍

    @@GoodfordModelRailway There is one other thought and that is if the power draw is too great now. With all your other DCC fitted locos on track at the same time as this 9 unit 802, I would question if maybe your power supply is up to the task now. You could try removing some locos from the track to see if that helps.

  • @GoodfordModelRailway
    @GoodfordModelRailwayАй бұрын

    @@NewModelRailway1 thanks for the suggestion however it is not a lack of power, the loco wheels are spinning so the loco is getting adequate power. If you give the train a nudge it starts to move and run. When first received, the loco could not even maintain momentum with the full rake and ground to a halt. Lubricating and adding extra weights has made a significant difference to this “ready to run” model!

    Lovely running session,how do set up you’re locomotives to run double headers smoothly on DCC do you use the same decoders with same cv settings ?

  • @GoodfordModelRailway
    @GoodfordModelRailwayАй бұрын

    Thanks! Running double headers has been an ongoing issue. I use various methods. Many of the locos have their drive train removed and motor disconnected so they are dummies (like the Harry Needle 20). I did it this was as trying to speed match Zimo and ESU decoder is almost impossible! For the West Coast double 33 and 57 combo, this was tricky. The second 33 is a dummy with no sound and drive shafts removed. Tried that with the 57 too but kept uncoupling so just spent some time speed matching it with the 33. I set all locos to linear speed curves anyway so as long as the max speed is the same it becomes relatively straight forward. The final method is the easiest and I use the same decoder and same settings, sometimes a bit of tweaking is needed but generally they run well this way. Hope this helps 👍
