    Never believe a photographer with hundreds of thousands in gear when they tell you it isn't the gear. It's a little bit the gear.

  • @poti732
    @poti73210 сағат бұрын

    Hey peter, Im always hearing that “its not about the gear “ and that is true to some sort of degree. I would argue tho that gear is 5x more important for videography . First of all , you need good audio which you cant do without a good mic, you need some sort of stabilization like a shoulderrig, gimbal , dolly , crane, the footage wont be stable even if you try your hardest without the gear. IF you want stable footage you NEED to have xyz. There are workarounds for some things, but if you compared a video of a street where the dynamic range of the given camera is 8 stops and its 8bit , the footage in its core fully different than a 18 stop arri , because the shadows would fully cover the streets, the black will be pitch black , lot more contract than wtih the arri, if there is a homeless person forexample in the shadows on the rainy street, the arri will see that, it gives + dramaturgy in the footage, where as the cheaper cameras will have totally different effect on the viewer . Same with using anamorphic lenses, stabilizations, cine lenses w crazy flares. All of these can be a creative decision and if you dont have xyz gear…. You cant make those decisions at all. It influences your story telling. Someone with no prior knowledge wont be able to make use of these gears, so for them gear does not matter, but for experienced professionals gear really pushes those images in a totally different creative direction Ofc your point is true as well that having too much gear makes you think on what to use instead of just creating something.

    Firstly great light makes a shot better quality by far. Secondly, using these primes or pro lenses makes the shoot and quality a pleasure, allowing you to work better and get a high quality baseline.. then the talent, location and asthetic bring it all together. But lighting imo is first :) Personally, I shoot 90% of my work on the RF 50mm 1.2, which transformed my business because I could achieve the look and quality I wanted, however I already had a decade of knowledge regarding photography, lighting etc. The gear does make the difference, but mainly if you have the other components soundly in your knowledge.

    Kudos for having the courage to touch on an explosive topic that many avoid dealing with. I must say that most of the implied nudity or semi- erotic I see from photographers on Instagram are embarrassing and it shows on the model's face. As someone who mainly shoots FTP and meets a lot of women who are not professional models, I like the process and the trust and intimacy that is created by the hours. for me, the facial expression and the feeling from the look in the eyes are more influential (artistic value) than how much skin area is seen. I do shoot implied nudity and even in a sexy ways but it always comes from the models after the first photo session - not from me. good video- thanks!

    My stepdaughter is a fashion model and its surprisingly more complicated and skilled than i thought. The poses, taking direction, keeping the look and really having confidence in yourself. Most models are not just a pretty face either. They are quite intelligent.

    Peter. I’ve been following your channel for quite some time now (love it) and have a question regarding shooting in portrait mode verses landscape mode. I noticed that you very rarely shoot in portrait mode so I’m curious as to why you pick landscape over portrait?

    I'll share my thoughts, as usual, in case someone is interested ;) And it's probably good for your channel. I agree, a lot of lenses in a backpack can be dead weight. That's because if you don't make an effort, you'll constantly come across scenes that require a full set of optics and spend more time replacing them than working on the scene. It's really distracting and interrupts observations and thoughts. That's why when shooting street scenes, my friends and I practiced focusing on one lens. And it really works. This means that with a 200mm lens, I can't see anything at all at my feet and look into the horizon far ahead, while someone else is looking under their nose because they have a 24mm lens. With mechanical optics, I still had a habit of keeping my hand on the focus ring and turning it according to the distance I was looking at. This gives you seconds to gain, and in many street situations, the scene lasts no more than a few seconds. When I started shooting portraits under controlled lighting conditions and with planned poses, I came to the conclusion that for thin girls, an 85mm is enough, but if the model has curves, I need a wide-angle lens and time to find the best angles and lighting. The usual professional task of choosing a model is completely inverted in my case. There is a girl standing next to me, and I need to take beautiful photos so that she can show them to her friends and so that she herself will like these pictures. And she has never posed for the camera, except for selfies on her phone. So now I've practically given up on fixed lenses and get more out of two zooms, the 70-210/4 and 24-70/2.8. Thank you for good topics and shots with beautiful models ;)

    these are great images. of course thats par for the course. do you think, the push for sharpness might be driven by the same mentality, of more power in a hi-fi system? you dont have to USE all that power (and maybe the images can be softened) if needed but you cant really make an image sharper without more 'damage' so to speak? i dont have enough knowledge with Lr or Ps to know for certain but it seems you can always dial something down or back easier or better than trying to dial it up. i dont know. i cant afford to get new gear every time something is released. im still shooting a mkI EF70-200f2.8 on a 5D3 (for my sports work)...

    It seems like the main difference between lenses was in the difference in aperture and depth of field. In this case you wanted to keep in mind the special rock background you were using. The sharpness or softness of the background would be something you wanted to be aware of. You could have pulled that off with any of the lenses.

    Absolutely the best understanding of light video. Keeping it simple with stunning results. I have been experimenting with this lighting setup in my studio and has become my most favourite lighting setup. Most models I have photographed, never experienced this lighting setup with other photographers than by me. And all want to come back because of who I am,how I work and the results. You are my greatest inspiration source for this Peter, thank you so much. I still have to sign up for Inspire😉.

    Hey Peter it was nice meeting you and Bec at Tomorrowland. Thank you for the little chat we had. For my portrait work I only use my Voigtländer 35mm lens. It's all I need. For my style I never have the feeling that I need a wider/tighter lens or a different bokeh. For me it's more about the light.

    God I had this issue just two days ago. I have all this awesome glass and when I get there to shoot, the country side was rugged and to get anywhere picturesque it would take some hiking. So I just opted for the zoom and called it good! If I had a bunch of guys helping me lug C-stands and strobes around it'd be cool but I'm just one guy pushing 50. I think camera gear is the obsessive compulsive's dream addiction. There is always something else to get and like a virus, it continues to multiply out of control! It takes a disciplined mind to overcome some of these spontaneous buying urges. I'm not sure if I am there yet unfortunately.

    Model shoots are, as almost directly implied by the word “model” - product photography! It is super boring, photographically- because: there’s no personality being delivered in the images! If you want to take better photos- beyond gear - take photos of people who you know well, and they trust you to act naturally in front of the camera. Knowing them, will also mean that the photos have a value to tou specifically- because this is a friend or family member in the image- which you together created! So way beyond gear, and way more important than gear - take photos of people with shared confidence and friendship.

    What a great video Peter, I totally agree. First of all thanks for showing untouched photos to show the difference between the lenses (I mean comparing lenses with edited photos has no use at all, let stand applying presets !!! ) To substantiate your point, look at all the "behind the scenes" videos of Peter Lindbergh (IMO the best of the best) he almost always use the same camera and lens, under any circumstance ! Wonderful, thanks for sharing !
