Shmuptopia

Shmuptopia

Hello and welcome!

For those just swinging by for the first time, I started Shmuptopia to give games in the STG genre their own spotlight. I have an immense passion for STGs that started in 2018 and really wanted to begin spreading shmupwareness to the darkened corners of the planet and far beyond.

I am pretty much exclusively on Switch these days and have been for a while but aim to branch out more and more over time.

I offer First Looks, 1cc runs, reviews, guides, and more. I always respond to the stellar comments left by the incredible community we have growing here so never hesitate to drop something but please keep it appropriate. I love pouring my time and energy into all things SHMUPS so let's have an epic time together!

All my 1cc runs are real. No edits, save states, etc.

If you like my videos, free free to like and consider subscribing to keep up to speed with all future projects.

With all of that out of the way, strap yourself in and enjoy the ride through the cosmos!

    That's a great question! I haven't played any Cotton games for a few years at this point and I didn't do much with them at the time, so I don't recall all of the ins and outs. Chances are, it's not similar. I think the Cotton game I played had some sort of spell casting system or something like that.

    Glad you enjoyed it, man and I meant to respond much earlier. I'll have a supply of videos rolling out before long. I also feel like I need to showcase some of the older games that haven't received much attention. With how the channel has grown over the last while, there are some things people will likely remain unaware of unless I cover it again while doing something fresh. I have one game in mind I think you'll be intrigued by even if you never play it. Thanks for watching!

    Hi there Dace. I noticed you haven't done a deep dive in a while, rather you've been doing these short, sponsored type videos. Are these short videos you've been doing been in collaboration with these various, indie game makers?

  • @Shmuptopia
    @Shmuptopia19 күн бұрын

    Thanks for watching. The shorter videos are simply due to time constraints and other factors and while they may feel like they are sponsored instances, I've actually only received one code in the last four months. Everything else is either something I've just purchased to showcase on the channel or a physical copy I've had for quite some time and have only recently opened for briefly checking out. I'd like to eventually get back to more in depth public videos, though a chunk of my time is pumped into getting a supporter-exclusive resource video package together and my website. Plus controller reviews keep me busy. Trust all is well on your end!

    Good to see your vid and hear your impressions. I feel like there is layers to the depth of using all the mechanics. I am trying to figure out when to tap and when to hold shoot, and when to use warp or use the bomb. And then also trying to maximize the multiplier, i am having a hard time getting it all the way up leading in to the first stage boss. That mini boss tank wont die fast enough and i always get reset to zero right before that first boss fight. Your multiplier locks on the bosses and you dont have to worry about losing it if you enter the boss battle with it maxed. So there is definitely a high degree of intricacy for perfecting high scoring runs.

  • @Shmuptopia
    @Shmuptopia19 күн бұрын

    Thanks for sharing! It'll be interesting to hear what people do in this one in terms of scoring. I'm not sure when I'll get around to playing this more, though it'll be neat to see what the later stages are like.

    @@Shmuptopia I've completed the game twice. I think there may be a secret boss. There is some cryptic dialogue at the end. Also, In Project Starship X you had to beat the game 4 times to get the true ending. And each time the final boss was different it was pretty awesome.

    Congratulations on the clears. I wouldn't be surprised if there was a tlb somewhere. It's been ages since I played the other games, though so I don't recall if there are typically trends this dev uses for triggering them.@@VikingWarlord

    Picked up this morning and I’m having a blast with this - first PIS game I prefer to use an arcade stick… analog stick is slower by default and though it has more than 8-way control there’s no speed difference with tilt. Advice to anyone playing: let go of the stick and tap A to warp… you have plenty of time to pick your end point and I found if your holding the stick to lead where you want to go it can screw it up in multiple ways. Takes some getting used to but once you get the hang of warp and bomb on one button the game comes alive. Warp is your “panic” option and bomb is best for points and destructible obstacles.

  • @VikingWarlord
    @VikingWarlord20 күн бұрын

    I have found that the circle closes in when you activate it and if you hit the outside edge you come out of warp. I will try your suggestion of letting go of the stick when I first activate it.

    Loving the artistic direction and theme, but I'm not a huge fan of the teleporting feature and the enemies bullets patterns looked pretty weak, slow and repetitive in your video. Is there any improvement/variation in the other maps maybe?

  • @Shmuptopia
    @Shmuptopia21 күн бұрын

    I can totally understand your position on the teleport ability. I think it's a cool feature, though it feels like it doesn't serve as much purpose as it could given how seldom you need it per level. That said, I haven't dipped too far into the game yet to see what the rest is like - especially where the bullet patterns are concerned.

  • @Shmuptopia

    Hey, Dampy - thanks for checking this out, and great question. The Mini's PCB is hot swappable, so you can definitely put other switches in there if you find the stock LEOBOG switches too loud for your taste. As for keycaps, I have very little experience with keyboard style controllers and what caps to suggest. I'm not sure what is all available on the market but chances are members of the Haute42 Discord server have wondered about this or dealt with swapping the Mini's switches and key caps, so that might be a first place to start looking for additional information or guidance. Nice video! Been playing it for a few days now. There are many little secrets in the game, from clearing a certain landscape feature in a level, rescuing little characters, or even just staying in a certain spot until the countdown gives you a massive point bonus. You use the little red balls in the pinball/pachinko minigame. It awards you weapon crafting materials in Quest Mode and just points in Arcade Mode. There are also little tricks to the minigame mode that increase your chances for the highest values. The anchor grapple becomes a necessity in the later levels which I won't spoil here. It's a really fun mechanic that you can also sabotage yourself with if you paint yourself into a corner, lol. Overall this is a wonderful cute-'em-up with lots of replay value.
