Trying to have fun and make some sense while existing
Studying medicine at Otago University in Dunedin, New Zealand. In 2022 I'm doing an Honours research year with the department of preventative and social medicine.
Always looking for new ideas, if you've got one hit me up!

Can you please do one for HUBS192❤
Something important to note about today's first-year law paper is that it has undergone significant changes since 2023 (after the making of this video), placing greater emphasis on tikanga Māori. This entails that the first topic of the Laws101 course, Origins of Government, now centers more on tikanga principles (essentially Māori law) and its application to law in New Zealand today. Previously (when this video was made), the focus of this part of the course was on the English legal system and its development in England. It is one of the biggest and most important parts of the paper so I would reccommend that you try and wrap your head around the core values/ principles of tikanga if you have the opportunity to. Good luck with first year!
Was that a private flat or a uni hall of residence of some kind? Because it looked super fun!
Renting a 6 bedroom flat! First time living in our own place :)
What a legend! Coolest video I've seen in a while. I'm tempted to copy this :)
Hey thanks man! Would love to see it
Thanks for the video! can you make one for BIOC192 as well please? :)
I'm doing HSFY next year, and was really intrigued by your video. i have to admit, tho, that after watching it my only conclusion was: dang ur hot sir!! 🤣😭😭

You're welcome man all the best
Great channel and this will help a lot of new to uni students 👍🏽💯
hi Gavin I'm a 12th grade student I really wanna do my MBBS in New Zealand so what exam should I take in order to get admission in uni???
Hi Gavin, this is a really nice video! thanks for sharing! Just wondering, are all the students in their early 20'? are there any students who go work for a few years and then decide to study again at the age of around 30? thank you!!
Hi Daisy, there are mature students that join the cohort every year. I’m one of them, happy to give you some info if you need.
@ thank you Sofia!!! I would like to know what kind of course I need to prepare before enroll the dentist study cuz I had no background in chemistry, physics and biology 😭 Do you mind maybe I can add you on facebook to discuss over there ?
I have no trust to do any surgery or do treatment with you guys so called docs.
Hi Gavin, y mentioned somewhere that you did HUNT as your 8th paper in HSFY - I am in Year 13 hoping to try and get into medicine at Otago next year. I'm interested in taking HUNT as the optional 8th paper, but was wondering how you found it? Easy/hard? Useful? Recommend?
Yeah HUNT was pretty good and Sheila is a bit of a legend. Actual nutrition education in medical school is pretty scarce which is unfortunate based on how much good it can do for people so definitely worth taking a paper to learn about. Felt like I learned a lot, particularly in conjunction with reading the book "How not to die" by Michael Greger. High grades are definitely achievable and there is some overlap with bioc and hubs192. Stats is another good one to consider. Don't get much quant training in medschool. Also, a good chunk of medical studies use questionable methodology or conclusions which don't directly follow their results. Having a bit of training to be able to spot these things will serve you well. Even if it's as basic as actually understanding what a p-value is and when it is meaningful. Grades wise for stats, people that have studied it before find it real chill, and people that haven't say it's like a normal paper but they learn a lot.
Hi may I ask when is the holiday between the two terms? In otago university
What subjects do you recommend students take at high school for Law?
English and history mainly
Hello Doctor. Your video is really informative. I am an MBBS graduate from Nepal. I am taking USMLE exams. Could you please tell me how can I do postgraduate in medicine (internal medicine or pediatric or family medicine or GP) in New Zealand using my USMLE scores. In addition, can u please provide which websites will have authentic informations about it. Thank you very much!!
I'm a bit junior for this, but try the MCNZ website. www.mcnz.org.nz/registration/getting-registered/registration-pathways/special-purpose-scope/postgraduate-training/

Hey Gavin! Your videos are truly amazing!❤️ I wanted to ask you which what residential college do most HSFY students go to since I’ve received a conditional offer for HSFY 2023 :))
Hey thanks Kianna! This is probably coming to late for your decision, but will answer anyway. Healthscis end up at every hall with the sheer numbers. There's a bit of an effort being made to limit the proportion of healthscis at any particular hall (IIRC Arana does 40%) so that people have a diversity of experience, learning and interacting with students outside their bubble. Fully support this. That being said Carrington and Arana are classic places to pick for hsfy.
Hey, great video. What sporting oppurtinites are available at Otago or in New Zealand in general?
Pretty much everything you could want man. NZ is pretty outdoorsy
hey guys just had a question on the non-law papers that you do in sem 1 and 2 during first year what does that actually involve? and also is there anywhere highschool students can find past papers for first year to gain a little understanding of what the exams actually look like. cheers.
Is FY1, FY2 and Registrar at university of Otago and is it separate from bachelor of medicine and surgery?
FY1 and beyond happen wherever you get a job which could be anywhere in NZ. Yep they are separate from the degree but part of the same classic pathway
Amazing videos 😎 bro
Thank you!
Hi, is this a study to become a doctor? Do i have to take these courses to become a doctor?
Yeah bud, well a medical doctor at least
🔥
Hi Gavin, thanks for the video. I just wanted to ask. Do we have to learn everything from the textbook that is given to us?
Slides are the only thing to worry about. Lab book if you have time :)
Too good
Great work Gavin!
Thanks George!
Very informative!
The tigershark!! Legend.
LIFESAVER video. Can't thank you enough
what was concept 6?
To know all the terms of movement they mention for each joint/body part. Pronation, supination, abduction, adduction, inversion, eversion, rotation, dorsiflexion, plantarflexion, circumduction, etc. Real life hubs exams are a great time with half the exam hall waving their arms all over the place
Looking at your table right now - Is rectus femoris not involved in hip flexion?
Yeah it is and you could definitely include it along with iliacus + psoas (iliopsoas)! Beyond hubs detail: Rectus femoris only really acts when the knee is flexed. Also sartorius and iliocapsularis are other hip flexors.
have my hubs 191 exam coming up! very helpful mr bishop
What silly mnemonic have you created to remember content?
Awesome video! My Onenote web clipper doesn't let me clip PDFs. I get a pop up that says "Sorry, this type of page can't be clipped" every time i try. I use google chrome on a mac, any ideas why this could be the case?
Are you clipping a file online (url) e.g from moodle/blackboard or one that is downloaded on to your computer and then opened in chrome as your pdf reader? Clip to Onenote is only for the former
@@GavinBishop072 I am clipping a file online :( It keeps telling me that this type of page cannot be clipped. It isnt letting me do it for any PDFs I have tried regardless of their size
Never mind I figured it out! 😀
@@powertank8 Great! What was the solution?
@@GavinBishop072 The uni website I viewed PDFs of the lecture slides on (my uni uses canvas) did not let me view the file online. Also, my google chrome settings were setup to download pdfs online before viewing. To solve this, i changed my chrome settings and also uploaded my lecture slides onto google drive. Then, I viewed the PDFs with the "Print" output on google drive to view the PDFs online (as you mentioned before!) and it let me clip it! Thanks for the help Gavin! Being able to search on my OneNote is a real lifesaver!
Excellent video btw. Thank you very much brother..
I’m planning to come down to otago for HSFY next yr. how do I apply for the course
Love your work buddy x
meaningful ending there. Your scenes transited flawlessly. This is cool trendy! Will check out again. come visit me sometimes.
Super helpful!!! :))
Thank you soo much! Doing HSFY and already finding your tips so useful!
Happy to help :)
Showed this to my kitten and now I have a pet doctor
I use GoodNotes on iPad for handwriting lecture notes and Notion for everything else afterwards - such a good app. The integrations are second to none, and synced blocks and backlinks are great for reducing compartmentalisation and building a comprehensive set of notes. If you use your uni email address, you get the Personal Pro plan for free too. Just wish they’d add offline support.
Yeah if they had offline, handwriting support and a search like goodnotes/notability it would be all over
If anyone needs the bee movie script shortcut hmu
