I think your point about making art is kinda what led to me sorta taking a step back from the Culture War stuff as well; creatives just aren't meant to engage in this sort of stuff long-term because we just want to be creative and express ourselves and... have fun in the process. Like yes, sociopolitical issues are important but... holy shit, I'm convinced that people who make that the core of their personality are fucking sociopaths.

I have always been left wing. I've always identified as anarcho socialist, marxist, and Maoist, and I've always spoken from an aggressive and brutal approach to revolution. I believe brutality is reality. To ignore it is foolish, but to give into it just for cruelty sake is evil. I believe brutality towards the cruel is an efficient way to make change for the better. I believe the use of fascist tactics is necessary for an anti fascist movement. Using their skills against them. Thing is, I went through a little "fascist" phase. I didn't call myself fascist but I basically was. I was extremely bigoted, was anti lgbtq, and also pretty racist towards Muslims and black people specifically. I was radicalized by the far right without realizing it. I became obsessed with "anti sjw" content. It lead me down a pipeline. Thankfully, this phase only lasted a few months. I started realizing what I was saying and how little I agreed with it and decided to leave that ideology behind. The "skeptic" community was definitely the gateway into the pipeline. Keep in mind I was a middle schooler at the time. I was more gullible than I am now.

I disagree with you at around the 38 minute mark that the culture war was "designed" or "intended" to do anything. Nobody "designed" it. Saying it was "made" to do anything implies that there were masterminds behind it all (CIA, deep state, Illuminati, China, Russian bots, take your pick) purposefully derailing our society. The truth is worse. We did it to ourselves. The culture war is the end result of decades of trends in academia and political discourse. Certain issues reached a boiling point and I pull no punches when I say the Left are largely responsible for starting it and keeping it going. But I also think it goes deeper than that. Human beings fundamentally need an "enemy" and most people need a "cause." Especially as people enter their early 20's - psychologists even call this the "Messianic stage" of development. A whole bunch of young people latching onto their pet Save the World schema, colliding with the internet's ability to spread hitherto fringe ideas into the mainstream... I think this is what happened. You talk a lot about "they" and "them" as if KZread was a sinister and purposeful driving force in this, when the algorithms are literally designed just to give people more of what they like. Algorithms can be weighted artificially but I don't think that was the case here.

You were still an important voice and a light in the dark for a younger, more confused me. I know that your videos were being used by idiots who couldn't see nuance, but you cut through a lot of confusing bullshit that I was personally experiencing in my real life. You helped keep me sane, so although I understand your regrets, I still have to say: thank you for being there.

Having watched your videos since the atheism posting days, this video is powerfully indicative of your evolution of character, the culture war is destructive, we need to go back to just completely renouncing the trust of any and all information online. Nothing here matters or is real anymore. This world is too complex and the internet is so noisy, find peace and find truth, talk to friends and meditate on the saying "touch grass"

There's are components to this video that feel a bit revisionist, but I suppose we look back on our own actions more completely than anyone looking at us ever can. You know more about what you thought back then and have thought since. I'm relieved you've healed and continue to heal, though. I don't know if there will ever be a balancing of the scales in regards to the harm you've done with rhetoric your pioneered and parroted. You said yourself that you lost nearly 10 million views. I don't know if that many people will see this video. Still, I can't help but believe that the world is healing and changing, even one person at time, when a video like this can be made.

While i largely argee with you that the culture wars are useless I believe there are 2 main factors at play and you talked about them both. 1. The culture war content is essentially drama content, it just has different leanings, its kind of that simple. Find X thing, talk about it ad nauseum to a certain audience, make money. Its just another niche of drama content, it has the downside of dividing us. 2. You spoke a bit about it, but all the incentives are to make bombastic content on whatever is currently trending in said culture war. The thing is, this isn't just you, it's why i disagree with your idea that this is manufactured, the incentives are all there for the individual actors to make this type of content. This has affected every form of news proliferation out there, from the main stream, to small news sites, they have all become like this. I disagree with the idea of the echo chamber you presented, i actually think we are in the least echo chamber time of human history, and this is a problem. Lets take for example before the internet, where obscure political leanings by X group of people were shuffled in some book that a grand total of 20000 people bought and maybe 2000 of those actually read the thing. The truth of the matter is that in the past most people didn't "find" their politics or moral prescriptions, it simply came from the community they were part of. And most normal people don't talk about politics in regular everyday life. The difference is now that you can find whatever political influencer to tell you or push into believing things, its now part of your identity that you decided and not just something you adopted from your community. Id argue that nowadays, we are not in echo chambers, but now there are simply too many voices, and they are too loud and in addition are trying to sell you things on top of it. I also highly disagree with idea of masculinity and proving yourself and feelings of worthlessness being a product of capitalism or a toxic masculinity thing. Lets tackle the capitalism ideal, men checking out of the workforce and not having children is not what capitalism wants, because the problem with your argument is that if the man fails, the man no longer is as efficient, and doesn't have kids. Capitalists want a large a workforce as possible, that is why population decline is considered such a big issue. The idea of the man proving himself is universal aspect of male behavior, various forms of stoicism exist in every single culture. From Japan to south korea, to the middle east, etc. etc. The film was buried frankly, because it's not a good way to put it. Society by and large doesn't care about men's trauma, and this is not exclusive to the united states, this is simply a human reality that men will have to face,we in all likelihood aren't going to socially engineer our way out of this aspect of human kind. This is a human universal, we have stories of men proving themselves to be worthy in ancient times, we have males going through hazing and rituals as part of growing up far before capitalism leered its head out in the world. I largely agree with you though, audience capture is a horrible thing, nothing corrupts more than money and status, and youtubers get both, no wonder they get compromised. Wish you luck skeptic.

The further from objective +/or divine truth any ideology or individual strays, the sooner it devolves into fracturing (ie, infighting & division). Atheism (as a former atheist/antitheist) is inherently false, so that tracks. Before the phoenix rises, it is consumed by the flames. Truth is like fire: it illuminates, but it burns. People have long imagined/been misled to believe that JC returns as a singular human man--lol, no. He returns, most saliently, as the proverbial fire, which circles in like a spiral, to burn away all that is untrue (in 'higher' realms, of consciousness). Dis-ease (& socially, dis-order) is typically the manifestation of feeling that heat: the result of lack of integrity between Spirit and Soul (commonly expressed as hypocrisy & denial; see: Ego Defense Mechanisms). Chaos, whether internal or external, presents opportunities to evolve ("chaos is a ladder"; _ordo ab chao)_ ...or to perish. Most people disappoint me, owing to my own shortcomings r/t naivete. But you're one of the rare examples of my intuitive recognition of exceptional potential that became realized, and your evolution (& courage to publicly demonstrate it) inspires me to hold on to a tiny bit of hope for so many other "wanderers." Love & appreciate you. 💘🦋🕯️

*naivete, but also unrealistic expectations. I had long vastly underestimated people's willingness to just admit "Oh. Turns out I was wrong about that." Everything comes full circle (360, and 'brat summer'), and pride both builds and destroys. ⭕

A lot of us got involved in the "culture war" because we could see the damage that ideology and identity was going to have, like you said, the athiest community was being pulled apart because of ingroup outgroup fighting, and it felt like when we should have been pulling together we were trying to turn all our allies into enemies. Your early videos were the best, and the ones where you went after obviously wrong ideas, like flat Earth and creationism. I stopped watching 'Skeptic' content completely after you did your video on Bill Nye, I think I maybe watched a few more of your videos, and maybe some Chris Ray Gun videos. I think, I certainly hope, that Bearing wasn't as big as you think, certainly not as big as many gave him credit for. He wasn't a skeptic, he was just making edgy teenage jokes and bullying people he thought he'd get a laugh out of. Some of his videos were funny, those that made fun out of the utterly ridiculous ideas out there, but in most cases he wasn't laughing at ridiculous ideas, but at people. I'd love to see a new people empowering community push those ideas we had in the late 90s and early 00s of not being isolated anymore.

The poster's subheading doesn't help either. So not really surprising.

Keep going on your journey, remember whilst you need to consider the fake bots and comments, and take everything with a grain of salt, it's still easy to see genuine comments, i see plenty here, some stoked for you, some sharing they don't think you've finished thinking all the eay through, commenting on the all sides comments (not that i'm argueing any side is perfect or without people who use the label without actually caring about the cause behind that label) remember to take in the harsh with the good.
