Deserves a trophee for making funny and entertaining an art of magic that is often too easily pushed towards scary grounds. I really loved this act, the equilibrium between top notch effects and pleasant acting is perfect. I think this is how spooky magic should be presented, not too scary and not too phony. Thanks for sharing this routine with the community !

I think I might have figured this one out, and it lines up with what Penn said. Also, when Penn gushes with praise, you know it means they weren't fooled. I recall one show in which he called a Fooler a "rat bastard"

I am a few moments from the end whether Penn & Teller are fooled so I need to pause and just say, right now, what a beautiful routine, and script full of such comedy parody, "taken-so-seriously", I loved it. Now, to continue to the final reel!

SPOILER ALERT, if you don't want to know how this trick is done (or at least, how I think it is done) stop reading now... Lets go in order as there where several and different effects on this act. 1.- Alison's selection, that is the most simple part, the notebook she is handled is a Svengali notebook which means that is designed in a special way so that it doesn't matter how many pages does she riple through, she will always see the exact same phrase. (I will not explain here how a Svengali notebook works but you can look for that on google or even here on youtube) 2.- Teller's selection, there are special pens that can be bought either on magic shops and on spy shops that have hidden cameras or electronic devices that let you know what has been written, that is how they know the 2 digits Teller wrote for the date and to make it easier they made it so Teller only has to think of two numbers instead of four. 3.- Penn's selection, well this couldn't be even simple, they have some people working with them, somebody behind scenes can see Penn's selection and relay that on them 4.- The shaking table, well, the table is quite light and is hollow, it has a motor inside which when remotely triggered makes it vibrate and as a result some of the stuff on top of the table fall to the groud. 5.- Julia's levitation, clearly they are using some kind of device like "A special head" used, basically the have a support fixed on the chair and a base where she will sit to make it look like she is levitating. That base is hidden within her clothes. 6.- The burnt and restored note with Alisons selected phrase. That is just a simple switch, Sean Paul does actually have that crumpled piece of fabric (or paper) which the phrase printed on (as I explained, that phrase was forced by using a Svengali notebook) so he just had to keep it hidden on one of his hands and pretend to restor the burnt piece of paper (or fabric), and just opens the previously hidden piece of fabric with the phrase "Good Night" 7.- The turning candle, you can clearly see Juliana pressing a button on the base, what I think it happens is that the candle is actually a light cylinder of some kind of plastic with a tiny servo motor inside, right on the middle and there is a transparent thin rod where it is fixed to the base, when Juliana presses the button, a mechanism inside the base pushes the rod up a little and also activates the motor that is on the middle of the cylinder to make it do a 180 and then it lowers the rod back to the original position. I think I covered every stage of the act, if I missed anything please let me know and I will explain which ever part I missed.

They blew all the budget for props for this show. However I think Alyson might have a free choice because she uses the same gimmick pen that Teller uses. It's weird how Teller already has a pen but the magician makes him use his own pen and notebook. Also another weird thing is that the magician needs to write something before the victim does. Like he had to make an X before handing the pen and pocket notebook to Alyson (where else was she supposed to write) or writing 18 before handing it to Teller (again why do that). I think that pen has some standby feature and might not record the first pen moves well. Penn's selection can also be done by marking the back of the cards with invisible ink and using special contact lenses. Juliana clearly looked at the back of that card. Supposing the helper doesn't have access to the live video feed.

The history is well known about Houdini. I don't get this trick at all. Why did the girl not float away from the seat? The man took the candle off the girl, after the candle spun, and twisted a locking device.

To be fair I’m not aware of exact titles of tricks like whatever they’re referring to with “red ashes”, but I caught these: “and really CONCEALED” I assumed there was some device hidden within each of the ‘murder weapon’ bags that when moved (or lifted to show the audience) they would get a buzz in a pocket or something “COMMUNICATE with one another” any info the guy gets, he can communicate to the girl via Morse or whatever with similar buzzes “but we got the IMPRESSION” they take the pad of paper back from Allison and Teller after they write on it, and the impression on the special pad reveals what was written on the page “SELECTION of Allison” the book given to Allison was a forced-choice. Whatever she selected would have been Good Night.

4:56 - I am gonna go out on a limb, right now, and make a guess. That pad that he has them write down their answers on, with that pen, creates some "bleed through" onto the page below, which they can activate, like with disappearing ink, with lemon juice or something.

I was thinking the same thing… Or a paper that leaves a mark when a fingerprint touches it… Like the oil on the finger leaves a slight color difference, where they touch it… Showing them which word she picked when they flip through it

I’m pretty sure the book Allison flipped through has paper the reacts with the oil on fingerprints… When she touches that paper with her fingers, it leaves a slight Mark giving them an indication of what the word was when they flip through it
