    Hi Mr. Jack, Love your video Can you help us out on our large Donkey Ear plant that has grown on an angle over the pot. The thick stalk has snapped open. Can I replant the stem into the ground with new organic soil or trim the stem a little..? I wish I could send you a photo...! Thanks

  • @JackSpellerberg
    @JackSpellerberg4 ай бұрын

    Sometimes that happens,but the good news is..yes you can plant the stem into another pot with new soil. Let the stem callus over a couple of days and then plant it. Water it a little bit not too much then watch for new growth. Once you see new growth you can water when needed. I hope this helps, and fear not.. it'll continue to live and grow. Thank you for watching and commenting!

So yeah, they are young... so you are saying they should be adjusting ? I hope... Hey Jack… I know this is an old video… and I saw how you attempted to grow the seeds… I would suggest going to “Ecoscape” here on youtube and watch his videos… His name is Alan Beverly and he cultivates these aloes in Santa Cruz, Ca. And he also sells different sizes of the plant for a very reasonable price… he also sells the seeds and those are also a very good price. He’s got quite a few videos on this plant if you’re still interested. He does have a website which you can lookup in the youtube info area… good luck. I have 2 aloe spirals that I’ve purchased from him… in fact, he has a great deal on 10 1 gal size plants for $200 plus shipping these are already started for you, if you really wanna grab some.

    They seems to like less light than other plants. They should do good under a tree with shade. The leaves might be smaller because it's a different kind of Donkey Ears. I'm not sure about that.

    Just curious. So after a cutting like this during the dormant season, when you get back to that following spring summer, how much growth in terms of new leaves and fig production occurs? And is it more realistic to expect that after this type of cutting it might take two seasons or so to get a really nice amount of productionOr does that occur right away? Thank you for the video! That was awesome!

  • @JackSpellerberg
    @JackSpellerberg2 жыл бұрын

    I can't accurately answer those questions. That's above the scope of my knowledge. I will say though that this pruning on this particular tree encouraged a lot of new growth and a bigger production of figs. I also did it to increase the airflow in and around the tree because it had grown very dense.

  • @johnnynyr1981
    @johnnynyr19812 жыл бұрын

    @@JackSpellerberg no that's a perfect answer. I mean I'm pretty much a novice. I was lucky I moved into my new house a year and a half ago and lucky to have a bunch of mature fruit trees in the backyard. I have a fig tree that's about 18 ft tall and 16 ft. Wide so I'm looking to make that bad boy the main supply of fruits. It gives me a nice quarter sized figs but I know they can be much bigger. It's a brown turkey one.. And then I have to do the same. I have a couple apple trees that are way too overgrown and some walnut and black walnut trees.. I didn't realize how fast a fig tree grows. I had cut off some growth in the winter dormant. And then when I came back now late May early June I'm like. Wow. It looks like I cut nothing lol All the new growth and all the new leaves and everything that's sprouted out that I didn't think was going to happen So it feels good seeing that. So now I know that when I cut it back even shorter like you did in your video, I'm going to be okay because it knows how to grow. So that was really helpful. I appreciate you taking the time to respond back

    Hi Jack, I hope you’re well! I bought this plant from a nursery a few months back and it’s huge! About 3x your plant size. I live on the east coast (Philadelphia, PA). I noticed one of the leaves on the bottom of the plant is mushy and turning yellow about 3 to 4 inches on the tip. It seems to be rotting or something. When I brought it home I noticed the soil had a nasty, funky smell but I thought it was just the type of soil that the nursery used. To my surprise it still smells! The soil is quite hard which makes it impossible for me to stick my finger into it. Therefore, I can’t tell if it’s in need of watering or not. I am watering it biweekly until the water runs out through the bottom onto the tray. I do not allow for it to sit in the tray of water. It was love at first sight and I would hate for something to happen to it. Please enlighten me on what I should be doing for the care of this plant. I greatly appreciate it! Thank you very much, and thank you for the wonderful video. - Allie PS: it had one small pup when I first got it but nothing now.

    It sounds like your doing all the right things. They don't like to be over watered that's for sure. You could repot it, but if it's doing fairly well I'd leave it alone, and keep an eye on it. After I made this video I lost almost all of the babies this plant put off, and the original plant died. I now have several grand / great grand babies from the original mom, and they're doing great! I have a short video of me watering them, and being under new lighting. My advice is do what your doing..it sounds like it's working! Thank you for watching and commenting I appreciate it!
