    The problem with concrete is that it can be compromised because its a continuous solid unit. Look at the quakes in turkey a few years ago or the condo's in FL those concrete structures crumbled. However, traditional masonry buildings made of brick wouldn't have this problem as they move independently from each other

    Nice summary. While all possibilities of insulation are correct, in reality only outside insulation is used (and ICF forms). Putting insulation inside concrete home is a dreadful idea. I'd consider a typical EPS ICF a bad workaround, though there are some systems using board inside and EPS outside. Putting EPS inside is really silly: You'll use all accumulation properties of the concrete, which are otherwise excellent and you won't be able to hang anything on the wall, without some crazy workarounds.

    Do you have any resources on using concrete in earthquake zones? We're looking at a predicted magnitude 8, and because a concrete house is going to be there for a while, it's going to be around until that 8 happens again and again.

    How much more expensive (if it is) is a concrete house that's exposed on the exterior and interior? I just think about all the additional costs like framing the interior, drywall, painting. Same can be said for the exterior, you now need insulation, stucco, siding? Does the concrete truly end up costing more if you already have so many additional costs that need to be added? Just wondering.

    i think the therm "breathble wall" might be misunderstood in this video. to my knowledge, a breatheble wall breaths vapor not air. we use blown in celluoloce and the wall needs to be air thight but vapor open. athorwise condecation wil take place inside the wall. light staw clay walls finisht whit a natural plaster breathts, and is a lot more sustainble than synthetic or miniral insulation. it alos creats a haelty inviorment. Unlike pur and pir insulation. An athor alternative for the instant hot water is a heat battery. like a salt hydrates or phase change battery. This way you don't need t store electricity in battery's. Wich are more expansive and less sustainble. The heat battery can be charged with solar hot water collectors and a heat pump powerd by green enegry. A house schould indeed be build to last a long time. But, ad the end of its life. The materials used, schould not and up on a landfill. but be biodergdable or endlessly recycled.

    “All the window replacement have to go thru landmarks, there is a big process for that.” Pardon the ignorance but what does that mean? Is landmarks some sort of inspection process or something?

  • @mulemule
    @mulemule5 ай бұрын

    It means the property has been deemed as having historical/architectural significance and thus there are strict rules Re: what can or cannot be changed. (It's also worth noting that not all Landmark designations are equal: they can vary significantly in terms of what is or is not allowed.)

    In the UK we would call that Grade Two Listed; of some architectural merit germane only to the original exterior………..Grade One Listed would mean a serious ancient monument/castle.

    It means the subcontractors have to stand around doing nothing while the hysterical society decides what they can do. It’s why the contractor took his bid and tripled it because she/he has to keep paying so the subs don’t leave for another job while waiting.

    Number 20 is the best point here and also Number 18 that instant hot water is crazy for buildings that aren’t houses, art studios for examples-where you don’t require a bath or shower or laundry
