4:39 how great would have it been to get a letter from Dick ? Being a well traveled Alaskan fisherman ( I've fish twin lakes based from Windsong Wilderness Retreat ) one thing that Dick never addresses and that the biting flies and mosquitoes. I wonder if he packed in Deet because it's the only thing that keeps those millions strong pests away. Skipping this year but God Willing back in 2025. Still enjoying Halibut and Salmon I shipped back 2023.

How did he keep the bugs off when he was outdoors? He must have lived in bug spray. I have yet to find an effective homemade bug repellent that can keep gnats, deerflies, and mosquitoes off my face while clearing brush in the woods, near a swamp in rural northern Wisconsin. I slather myself in Deet all summer. Biofreeze works along my hairline, and around my nostrils, but only as long as doesn't evaporate. Then I see this guy, Dick Proenneke, living in the Alaskan wilderness without a store to run to when the deet runs out. Maybe he uses smoke from a campfire.

Wenona canoe company tries to lay claim to this man's glory by saying/claiming Dick Proenneke's boat of choice was their Wildernes 15 solo. ( a great boat in some ways) but truth is, Dick used an old aluminum square stern Grumman.

DP was a former welder and diesel mechanic. He is a testament to determination, ethical use of the outdoors, and massive practical knowledge and skill sets . What a story of his devotion , naturalist skills. And all the great information he recorded of his surroundings during his odessy in the wild.. Legendary ❤❤❤❤

This is an amazing documentary. It is extremely sad that politicians, billionaires and millionaires have made this kind of living impossible, unless one has A LOT of money to buy land. Now, rich people just pay someone to build their houses in rural areas. A big reason this documentary is so compelling is because it's a fantasy in today's world; unless you are rich.
