Dick Proenneke in Alaska, Silence & Solitude

www.DickProenneke.com - "Alaska Silence & Solitude" is the follow up to "Alone in the Wilderness", filmed about 20 years later. Bob Swerer and Bob Swerer Sr. visit Dick Proenneke at his famous cabin on Twin Lakes where wildlife is still abundant and the scenery is spectacular. Bob Swerer has taken the best footage from Dick's films and he has created 3 videos about Dick, "Alone in the Wilderness", "Alaska, Silence and Solitude" and "The Frozen North". You can purchase all of them in DVD or VHS format from the www.DickProenneke.com website.

    Not true at all. Most years he went back to CA or Iowa to spend the winters. He did not live in Alaska year around for 30 years. He moved back to CA to live with his brother when he got too old to take care of himself in Alaska and eventually died I believe in a nursing home there.

    I've watched Alone in the Wilderness all the way maybe over 40 times. Why did I wait until now to see about other videos and the book? This is my first time actually hearing Dick's voice. I've grown so accustomed to hearing Bob's voice that it felt weird to hear the man himself finally speak. Whenever Bob talks it's sounds like he's imparting some kind of wisdom about the world. Dick, to me, is like some mystical being who used to walk as a mortal man but now lives on in the Wilderness.

    I can relate. My parents, Norman and Sylvia Wilkins, set out for Alaska at 50 yrs of age to carve out a life on the frozen tundra at Nelchina. Much like Dick Proenneke, Norman journaled every day of the 27 years he spent there. Those journals have now been transcribed into a 3-volume documentary journal: titled, 10,000 Days In Alaska.

    I lived in remote mountains of SC all my life, at 27 I now live in Memphis. I did a lot of hiking by myself camped many times in the Appalachian Mtns. I always love setting on a rock bar way up on the Chattooga river where few rarely venture. The calm, peace, and the continuous flow of the river always gave me a sense of peace. Many people live entire lives and never get to live and experience such remote areas and enjoy them day in and day out. It does wonders for your soul having such peace.

    I purchased all the Dick Proenneke videos years ago and have never ceased to be infatuated with him and his classic life style in the natural wilderness. The term wilderness conveys the wrong idea. To Dick and of course the American Indian what we're calling wilderness was their super market. They knew where all the resources in their environment were and how to get them.

  • @shaylab

    @shaylab

    9 жыл бұрын

    Ironic statement you made. The true normal life is living the way this guy did. The majority of human existence and human evolution lived like this. The city life is new in terms of how long humans have been on this planet. Yes everybody could live like this, they just don't know any better because of how they are programmed from birth. In fact it would actually be much easier and more natural for us to live like this. We actually have made things more difficult the way we live. Not to mention how out of sync we live with the rest of most other life forms on the planet.

  • @ianmccormick7051

    @ianmccormick7051

    9 жыл бұрын

    shaylab I think you're confusing 'normal' with 'natural.' When more people are living in traditional human civilization, that is by definition normal. And even that I don't believe is natural, because it ignores the fact that humans are one of the most social animals in existence. We exist in communities, not apart from them, and we would have died off as a species long ago if we remained separate. Cities may be relatively new, but tribes are not. We are a species that invents, so it isn't really correct to say things are unnatural because they are new. I would say that cities and all of our modern technology is a byproduct of our inquisitive nature.

  • @shaylab

    @shaylab

    9 жыл бұрын

    Ian McCormick Yes, 'natural' would have been a better word to start with in my statement. But somehow I think you still knew what I am getting at. And yes it is unnatural to kill off entire species for our own benefit and ignorance (which is the new part), which is exactly what we have done and do. All I was getting at is the way we live now, is purely to our benefit and most of the time not in sync with our enviornments. I didn't really bring up living together or apart (don't know where you got that from?) That really has nothing to do with what I am saying. We can live in communities, but also in sync with our surroundings. Our laziness and greed kills the world.

    So I guess he just narrated from Dick's journal then? This really is a surprise to me, the narration goes so perfect with the video. Then again what did Dick do that wasn't near perfect? But yeah that is a real big surprise to me. I am looking to move out to a river bank this summer and see if I can live undetected coasting up and down the land camping out and just getting a feel for living out doors.

    quote from one of the vids "Hunting season was opened and closed with 1 shot fired" and even then he felt bad for killing the mountain goat. But figured that there were much worse ways he could have died. Much respect for this man.

    The "trappers cabin" was CPT Spike Carrithers USN (ret.) cabin, and Dick lived in it while he built his own. Spkie was a friend of Dicks, and Dick left his camper with Spike while he went off to build his new home. "He's never been sick -not even a cold" is laughable. One of the driving reasons for Dick to head off and live such a rigorous lifestyle was because while he was serving in WWII in the Navy as a Carpenter, he came down with rheumatic fever, which left him bedridden for 6 months.

    I am envious of his lifestyle,it's not for me though,a life with internet and the conveniences of technology have me too content. If we could all be happy with nothing but a roof over our head and food it'd be a much better planet to live on.

    Interesting to hear Dick himself speaking, instead of the narrator I think a lot of people take as being his voice.

    It's strange to hear the narrator talking about Dick, since it's the same voice that played Dick himself in "Alone in the Wilderness".

    They can only do so much. The reason why old movies can be remastered, is because they were shot in really high resolution, much higher than was needed. These were not, sure they could probably be enhanced a bit, but sadly it will never be crystal clear sharp 1080p or 4k.

    Hey guys, love your videos. I wish Dick Proenneke and his estate the best. Just a little tip, add a h t t p and a colon double slash before the web address you provide in the description and people can directly link to your website. Might boost sales a bit. I plan to pick up my copy of your DVD's soon. Much love. DamageControlMMA

    Narrator says that Proennekke has never been sick. Not true. During his time in the service, he got deathly ill, bed-ridden. That illness is what inspired him to train his physical body to the fine shape that allowed him to build that cabin by hand while in his fifties.

    @YourLoveLetter Actually, if you read into his history...you'll find that he was very well known and sought after for his skills as a diesel mechanic (which is mainly how he saved a big enough money nest egg in order to do all of this while not working, and yet still place orders through Sears via Babe Alsworth who flew in to Dick whatever he ordered). He did lots of "good works" to help people around the town regularly. Also, everyone who visited him said he thoroughly enjoyed their company.
