I have never watched a frame of Star Trek. But I have watched many, many hours of video ABOUT Star Trek. (Mostly because Mike from RedLetterMedia references it a lot and I want to get the references.) I honestly have always seen the Prime Directive as a story device. It allows the writers a limit on what they can explore for... business purposes. Whether you want to see this as time constraints, education deficits, ad revenue, etc. A lot of tv and film does this, so I tend not to take those concepts literally. As I understand story to be metaphor. BUT this is clearly a limited view because stories do not exist in a vacuum. Your explanation of this really broadens my view here. Really great video. Was sent over by Rowan, glad I came over. If I ever actually WATCH Star Trek, your channel will be the first I come to. Cheers!

The thing about Dukat is: you like him. You like his wits, his speech, his sense of humor, you fall for his charm and you begin to think: hey, this guy isn't so bad after all, right? Until it hits you and you realize: you like a space nazi that was responsible for the Bajoran holocaust. Great acting from Marc Alaimo and great writing. DS9 is my ultimate favorite Star Trek show and one of my favorite shows ever. It ended on a high note, a bittersweet ending. Something other shows wanted, but could never achieve.

Certainly! Here’s a more detailed exploration of your fan theory regarding Commander Chakotay’s heritage, blending Maya and Navajo influences. ### Background Story **Parents’ Heritage:** - **Father (Maya):** Chakotay’s father could be from a Maya community, deeply rooted in the traditions of the ancient Maya civilization from regions such as present-day Mexico, Guatemala, Belize, Honduras, and El Salvador. His father might have passed down knowledge of the Maya calendar, astronomy, and ceremonial practices, emphasizing a connection to the cosmos and natural world. - **Mother (Navajo):** Chakotay’s mother could be from the Navajo Nation, which spans parts of Arizona, Utah, and New Mexico. She could have taught him about the Navajo creation stories, the importance of harmony with nature (Hózhó), and traditional healing practices using herbs and ceremonies. ### Cultural Practices **Spiritual Beliefs:** - **Maya Influence:** Chakotay’s spiritual practices could include rituals that align with the Maya calendar, such as those honoring the solstices and equinoxes. He might carry a small, carved stone or artifact symbolizing a Maya deity or spirit guide. - **Navajo Influence:** He could also incorporate Navajo practices such as sand painting for healing rituals, using traditional Navajo chants and prayers to seek guidance and balance. **Art and Symbols:** - Chakotay’s tattoos and artwork might reflect a blend of Maya and Navajo symbolism. His tattoo could incorporate elements of Maya glyphs and Navajo geometric patterns, symbolizing his dual heritage and the balance between the two cultures. ### Personality and Skills **Wisdom and Leadership:** - Growing up with teachings from both the Maya and Navajo cultures, Chakotay would have a deep respect for wisdom and leadership. He would value the Maya focus on community and the Navajo emphasis on harmony, which would influence his leadership style on Voyager, making him a compassionate and balanced leader. **Knowledge of the Stars:** - His father’s teachings about Maya astronomy would make Chakotay proficient in celestial navigation, an essential skill for a Starfleet officer. His understanding of the stars would be both scientific and spiritual, blending modern technology with ancient wisdom. ### Personal Journey **Identity and Conflict:** - Chakotay’s mixed heritage could lead to personal conflicts, especially regarding his identity and belonging. He might feel a strong connection to both cultures but also struggle with the pressure to honor both heritages equally. This internal conflict could be a recurring theme in his journey, driving his desire to seek balance and understanding. **Connecting with Other Cultures:** - His background would give him a unique perspective when encountering new species and cultures in the Delta Quadrant. He would be more open-minded and respectful of different traditions, often drawing parallels to his own diverse heritage to foster understanding and cooperation. ### Key Episodes and Moments **Vision Quests:** - In episodes featuring Chakotay’s vision quests, the combination of Maya and Navajo elements would be prominent. His spirit guides could include figures from both mythologies, offering him guidance and wisdom from both cultural perspectives. **Cultural Artifacts:** - Chakotay might collect and cherish artifacts from both cultures, such as a Navajo rug or a Maya codex. These items would serve as physical reminders of his heritage and the lessons he’s learned from his parents. ### Conclusion Blending Maya and Navajo heritage for Commander Chakotay adds a rich layer of cultural complexity and depth to his character. It honors the diversity within Native American cultures and provides a nuanced background that shapes his spiritual beliefs, leadership style, and personal journey throughout *Star Trek: Voyager*. This dual heritage would make Chakotay a unique and compelling character, embodying the strengths and wisdom of both the Maya and Navajo traditions.

Actually, it would make much more sense that the Borg civilization is tens of thousands of years old, perhaps hundreds of thousands. The comment about 900 years by 7-9 suggests an information disruption probably caused by a massive war on their planet or possibly some natural cataclysm like a nova exploding within 200 light years. It would also make sense that the Borg species counter would only start after such an event.

I wish you took a more deeper dive into historical materialism specifically, as it sticks out among the other theories you mention. Because its obviously easy to dismiss things like "civilizational stage" but things such as class society is far more of a real thing, than any "stages".

The Prime Directive is supposedly, quoting Captain Archer, a reminder than we are not going out there to play God. But the notion that we need to be gods, or morally superior in any sense, to help lesser people in times of need can be potentially overrated in the Trekiverse. We just need to find the right ways to do so and as children of the one true God, we should all be equally endowed with that much positivity. Of course the natural differences for an ET species could create unforeseen problems. But when those like Picard say that we cannot turn our backs, then the optimism that we are in the position to help for a reason does not feel farfetched.

One problem with your explanation about how many species the borg have assimilated. The borg don’t wait until a species has been assimilated before giving them a designated number. This number is given upon encountering a new species. Such as species 8472, the borg were never able to assimilate them. Or species 5618 (humans). The borg only assimilated a handful of humans. The borg queen even reiterates to 7of9 how species 5618 has resisted assimilation. It also can’t be assumed that these designations are given in numerical order. The borg discovered species 8472 in 2373. And the borg assimilated species 10026 in 2375. Meaning that they encountered/assimilated nearly 2000 species within 2 years. The borg have had trans warp capabilities since 2352. So why did it take the borg nearly a century to encounter/assimilate 8000 species, then suddenly 2000 more species within 2 years? It doesn’t quite add up.

Its not that she's "Always RIGHT" - Its that her "decisions" are ALWAYS deferred to , whether GOOD decisions or _NOT_ . Selecting ONLY "man-on-the-streets" who AGREE with the premise is NOT valid in ANY WAY . This character is the WORST of the entire Mary Sue CONCEPT and is a part of the RABID WOKE that prevented STD's "Discovery" by the fandom as REAL Star Trek . Blaming that lack of acceptance on THE FANDOM _ITSELF_ _instead_ of accepting responsibility for BAD WRITING and WORSE *"CONCEPT"* is PROOF that not ONLY was the main character MASSIVELY "Mary Sue" , but that PUSHING an *AGENDA* _through_ this character _INSTEAD_ of DEVELOPING A CHARACTER the FAN could ACCEPT and adopt into Canon is *_the_* MASSIVE *_FAIL_* that Star Trek is STRUGGLING to overcome .

It's so funny to read the comments section now in 2024 when everyone totally agrees that DS9 is a masterpiece, everyone is begging Paramount for an HD re-release, everyone loved the "What We Left Behind" documentary... But this enforces the point that DS9 was indeed underestimated for a long time... We've come a long, long, long way since then :)

Lower decks to me is the Saturday AM cartoons of my youth but Trek flavored. Paramount only cares about trek as a business that generates positive cashflow. Lower decks will be on as long as enough people enjoy and watch it. It is high drama and the best of sci-fi? Nope, it's just approachable comedy for non-trek folks. It's scoobydo in space.

As a plot device the borg are simple 'space zombies' in that they are just a individually mindless as the original movie "Night of the living dead" type zombies. The Borg are a great device to talk around the collective vs individualistic experience of life. We fear both space zombies and terrestrial zombies in the same way. Yet, we all want some collective identity with our chosen friendship/family circles (?clan zombies?) and will go to great lengths to remain part of our tribe and balance that will individual identity within the tribe. A little assimilation makes us a happy member of our group(s) :)

My hypothesis: Vger = Accidentally influences the Borg (they go seeking Humanity, which leads to their view of absorbing other species) Borg Collective = Q Continuum [in the future] (evolved after absorption of Vger+) Sha Ka Ree "God" = Last Remaining Human (sent back to the past to contain them, making it harder for people to reach them and free them) She Ka Ree = Prison made by the Q Continuum for "God" Nexus = Originally meant to entertain/distract "God"; drifted after billions of years, corrupted by "God's" past influence/interaction

The numbers refer to the species the borg has encountered and known, not the number of species the borg has assimilated. For example, species 5618 are humans. One of their last discoveries, species 8472, could not be assimilated, causing the Borg's disaster.
