    Thank you for your efforts. Both serial and MIDI are on my wishlist too for the X16. Hope this makes it into some product or diy kit. One thing I would like to have as X16 addon card is a GPIB/HPIB/IEEE488 interface - guess I'm the only one ;) ?.

    We have serial IEC of-course, but I do plan to make a dual 65C22 card. I just haven't figured out the exact form, but that plus a few 75150/151 driver ICs and you will have an IEC parallel port.

    I think it's wonderful you're making Midi an optional card for the X16. Another computer that had a YM2151 was the Sharp X68000, and it also supported Midi. In fact, a lot of games had both FM/PCM audio and Midi as options.

    I know this is supposed to be late 80s/early 90s-like so yeah there's wavetables, but once the sheen wears off, its "just" a souped up ROMpler which is almost the most boring synthesizer type you could possibly make. The YM2151 on the other hand, actually generates every sound sample itself, which I find to be more impressive.

  • @TexElec

    One of my main goals with this video is to show the audio output on the X16 when piping sources via the bus. With two cards plugged in, the impedance will change a bit, so I was testing to see if the noise levels were sill acceptable. There is somewhat of a comprimise on the board since the volume levels of any source are not controllable. I was constrained to through hole parts, so I did what I could. There are tons of wavetable modules out there, these are just the two I happen to have in my possession. Not every sound is for everyone, I get it. But this will allow many more options for those who want it.

    I feel like this could use a Wavetable header like the PCMIDI card and many PC sound cards. That way people can use internal Midi and have additional options for changing up how the machine sounds. It could be an optional addon for the card rather than necessarily the default, that way you could sell versions that are just as cheap as this one. Basically they have the option of having the base card like this, or one with a Wavetable header, 3.5mm jack and all the caps/resistors needed to support that. Very cool, though!

  • @mdrake42
    @mdrake426 ай бұрын

    Could a standard MIDI DIN cable work on that card, for plugging into my Roland Desktop unit. Your MIDI cable and socket on the Rackmount unit looks quite different to mine that I use with my SC-55 II on a PC.

  • @TexElec
    @TexElec6 ай бұрын

    The 3.5mm jack is a MIDI standard and I actually have a 5-pin DIN adapator cable plugged into the card. Then a standard 5 pin DIN is connected to my 90s era Roland JV-1080. I definitely think old MIDI HW will be the target here. I have not so secretly stated that I think there is great potential for this to be a low-power portable music machine for live performances. I'll know I did something right when I see a commander driving a bunch of synths in a music video. :-)

    Wow, only $349.99 for the main board and VERA after only raising $51k in donations and a lot of people spending 4 years of their time making this a reality and all the prototype and revision costs!? The projected price was $200-$300 without donations, so IDK why you use "only". Many people who spent 4 years of their time did it for free, except for 2 persons. In the mean time there is a $50 8-bit SBC for sale that was made by a single person.

    What? Fanboying much? No, the best retro computing platform is either what you have, or what you can afford. Not crapping on the product. But for most people somethink like a retropi equiped RPi or some FPGA solution is gonna be the best, because it lets them try all the old stuff with a low cost. This is mostly for retro enthusiasts and devs. That being said, I'm glad people still make new hardware using old architecture.
