They both did a good job. But Mick Mars does a great job and he plays that music better in my opinion and is a beast on the guitar!!

John 5 is "the guitarist". You know, like Steve Vai, Joe Satriani, people like that. So he's technically brilliant (he did fuck up that bend pretty bad though), but kinda "soulless" a bit. They all are. That's why I don't listen to music like that, artists like that, no matter what they play. So Mick is definitely much better.

Much better mix on John 5's version. Could barely hear Mick, so it's tough to judge. But what I heard John 5 played it better. But then, I've never considered Mick to be a great player.

Mick is the heart and soul of The Cure and always will be. I respect John 5 and he is a true guitar god in his own right. He’s very humble and I don’t feel he would ever think he was a replacement for Mick, I believe in his heart he knows and accepts that’s he’s a fill in and just truly loves you play music. He plays with respect.

Love both guitarists, but Mick plays it with more swagger. It's probably because it's his solo, and he's played it for decades. So he's continued to nuture his creation and develop it. Plus, he is a different guitar player than he was back then, he has evolved as well. John keeps it really close to the recording with minor stylistic changes that he can't help. But it still comes out like someone doing an excellent cover. Still, he does a fantastic job on it. But Mick owns it. Both versions sounded great until Vince ruined it.
