    Applied for the data center ops trainee in Tokyo/Osaka and denied within a week, no interview even. I have a decent bit of exp in tech, I did apply from overseas though

    I think timing plays a big role too. Sometimes the job has already been filled but the advert is still up. I wouldn’t give up though, there’s going to be so much expansion in the coming 5-10 years in the DC industry in Japan. It’s very early days still. You got this

    There’s plenty of people I’ve worked with that can’t speak a word of Japanese. Personally I would encourage anyone who wants to live in Japan to learn Japanese but it’s not a requirement

    you dont mention anything about the facility maintenance side, is it harder to get into or are you just not as familiar with it?

  • @Retro-Japan
    @Retro-JapanКүн бұрын

    It’s mainly because facility maintenance requires Japanese and usually some kind of mechanical engineering experience depending on the place. Most of those teams are made up of Japanese. Also, I’m not entirely sure I would class facility maintenance as an IT job either

    Great video, thank you for sharing! Can you offer more insight on Working Holiday Visas since you mention a "transition". I live in a country that has a working holiday visa program with Japan but the thing is they ask you to return after 1 year without being able to extend your visa or change it, so did you mean by transition as being from a country where you are actually able to change visas after 1 year? Additionally, I'm currently working as a Security Analyst remotely for a North American SOC (I speak Spanish and English on a native level and I'm starting to learn japanese now), so my question is: Do you think it's as easy to land a Cybersec job there?

  • @Retro-Japan
    @Retro-Japan3 күн бұрын

    Perhaps it’s different depending on the country. I know a few people that were on working holiday visas and then ended up finding full time employment and got a visa change

  • @Retro-Japan

    I guess it depends on several factors such as work location and personal preferences. Personally, I like to have access to Tokyo but I prefer having more living space in a quieter area so it works well. Maybe 5 years ago I would have chosen a box in central Tokyo for the same price though haha

    I think one of the main reasons why Japan as a whole is behind on the technology and why their websites look like they were created on Geocities, is because most Japanese don't know enough English to program in latest codes, which are primarily English based.

  • @Retro-Japan
    @Retro-Japan7 күн бұрын

    Also because software development is really undervalued here and many Japanese companies pay software engineers the same amount as English teachers

    I mean, it's good if you have no career and you want to start. For myself as an IT Professional this salary is a joke. And the bad thing is that I earn as normal employee as much as a senior manager in such a data cente. At least I assume it. I checked several job offers for my profession (Test Automation Engineer) and they offer around 7.000.000 bis 9.000.000 Yen/year and I earn twice as much. I'm not even a senior though. I would only move to Japan as a business owner.

  • @Retro-Japan
    @Retro-Japan13 күн бұрын

    It’s a fair point. When moving to Japan you have to take into consideration how far the money goes. Even my current position pays much more back in my home country, but if I was there I wouldn’t be able to buy a house, see a doctor and everything else is far more expensive.

    Thanks for this video. I have some questions regarding these jobs. Is there a reason why they're specifically aiming for foreigners? And are there opportunies for career growth? I've been teaching English for a long time and to be honest, there is no career growth as teacher in Japan.

  • @Retro-Japan
    @Retro-Japan13 күн бұрын

    They aim at foreigners because the job requires a high level of fluency in English as you’re communicating with global teams and all the internal software and tooling is English. There’s plenty of opportunity for career growth, you can change teams, departments, move up vertically into management etc. there’s annual pay increases, promotions etc. Once you’re in a company it’s much easier to network within the company.
