And MJ might’ve shot a flatter arc because of the nature of the shots he took- a mid range jumper off a 1-2 step needs a quicker release time as you jump, where a higher release point for a bigger arc might hinder the urgency. And considering his vert, a flatter arc would go in easily like a bigger arc :0
@cavegoblin.12 сағат бұрын
I think MJ and Kobe also cave in their knees for the reason of having a more explosive stance to push out of- for instance, in Taekwondo we’re taught to slightly bend in our knees with a wider stance to be able to explode into our kicks quicker. We’re essentially loading our joints with potential energy as they’re bent

The interior movement of the knee, is simply because of the long of his ligaments and tendons and the configuration of his knee (to the exterior of the legs). And this movement is a demostration of a higher range of motion of the body joints

MJ is very good at getting into and maintaining his balance. The wide stance with his knee caving in is done because he needs to stop his momentum to get in balance.

4:39 it's crazy how MJ has massive hands despite only having a size 13 shoe. In a book I read that he was so obsessed with becoming a great basketball player he would hang on pull-up bars at the park in hopes of becoming taller and visualize himself becoming taller. His dad was 5'9 and his mom 5'5. His short genetics and small feet make me believe hanging on pull-up bars to become tall worked for him.

That is a great video. It would be VERY interesting if you can compare how MJ changed his shooting form over his career. I think this video shows the form from 1996 aprox (most images are 97 or 98, I think), but when MJ was in NC and during his first Bulls years, he had a much more arching shoot and he would put the ball forward and his shooting form was quite different to what most people know of him and what you have explained in this clip. @DZ Shooting

The foot width on the pull-up is for both stopping and a wider base. I ran a 5.2 40 in high school. Decent. And I would stop my momentum by kicking my base out wide like that and keep my knees closer together for stability.

2:45 regarding the forward knee being “caved in”. This is actually pretty intuitive from a physics perspective. Coming into a shot he has a lot of sideways momentum. Planting the knee with a shallow angle helps to absorb that sideways momentum, store it as potential energy, and then release it upward. Exactly like a pole vaulter when they plant their pole on the ground, and it launches them into the sky

I think that knee caving in is a result of hard stopping and pulling up to shoot. Try it is slow motion with your momentum taking you one way and you want to pull up without your momentum taking you to the side you are moving. You see when he pulls up to shoot his body is not moving to the side in the air but straight up.
