Ride your own ride! I can't teach you much about motorcycles, but I can share what motorcycles teach us about life...
BugMoto tries to make content that is intentionally inclusive of older riders.
I ride a 2024 Triumph Scrambler 900. Previously I've owned a 2017 Triumph T120 Black, a Suzuki GS500e, and a Honda CX500. I also ride a 2023 Vespa GTS, and have owned a Piaggio Liberty 150, and a couple of mopeds.
My real name is Dan but I go by Bug. I live in Portland, OR.
My other, comedy-centric channel is www.youtube.com/@bugscooters and its mostly about scooters (Vespas mainly).

After 50+ years of riding I finally sold my last big bike,Victory Vision, as it was getting a little heavy for me, so wasn't using it as much, also have a Virago 250 for booting around town, but too many A-holes with cellphones in cages for my liking. Convertible time for me at 77.
Yes a million time! 😊
Great message. I got back a few weeks ago from a 4,200 mile epic ride in the US with an old buddy taking us from Mansfield MA down to Tennessee, up to the Canadian border and back to Mansfield over 23 days. We rode on the TAT and DBR trails on much of it. I rode a 690 Enduro and my buddy a Tiger 900. I’m 65 and he’s 60. As they say, JFDI!
Ha! I know Mansfield well. I'm originally from Norwood.
If Money doesn't buy Happiness, how do you explain Motor Cycles & Beer ???
Hi mate. Just turned 54 and enjoying your channel from New Zealand. What's your other channel?
Thanks! My other channel is... A little different. :) It's a scooter channel sprinkled with a little humor. www.youtube.com/@bugscooters
Are your mirrors on the right sides ? Long time rider, thinking about one last Rodeo.
WOW, I don't think they are!!! HA! I'll have to try them the other way....
Another great video topic Bug! We are getting older by the minute and life is far too short. Enjoy life to the absolute fullest possible. Like I said in another post, to me, motorcycle touring is tantamount to "communion on two wheels". And as a follow-up to that it is difficult to enjoy "communion" without like-minded people to commune with on two wheels. Anxiety is a mind over matter equation to me...I don't mind, because anxiety don't matter. I let it all go and enjoy the ride with like-minded friends. If some people don't like me, or I don't like them, I just respectfully part ways and do my own thing, again with like-minded people. Thanks for sharing! On another note myself and four motorcycle buddies are taking a 2,000 mile 5 day motorcycle trip over the North Cascades into Central and eastern Washington, western Idaho and western Montana at the end of July. It is going to be a blast!
Thank you! Enjoy that trip. It's such an amazing place to ride!
Is there an age that we declare ourselves dead? I will ride until I can't get on the damn bike.
Funny, my Facebook memory from today, was 4 years ago at the DMV during the peak of Covid. I spent close to 9 hours day one, and just shy of 7 the other time. I'm 58 now and only regret not starting sooner. Fear is our enemy. Cheers BUG!
I’ve had social anxiety ever since I was bullied as a teenager. I feel pretty crap around people, and find them draining , I also keep running over what I said to them. It’s crazy
Do the thing while we can still do the thing
Hi great vid somebody once said the hardest mile is the first one as l got older I found that to be true after that I settle into the ride all good from there stay free
I said yes when my daughter texted me about riding on the 4th. It was my first time out of our development onto regular city streets! After3-4 laps around the development. Had some TT moments on my V Star 250. Spunky bike designed to compete with the Sportster. About the same size as a mid-80's one. Daughter rode her Virago 650 classic cruiser.
I've been full time on the road for 3 years and I've been training myself to say Yes. One time I pulled over on a side street to see where Mr GPS was taking me. A guy pulled up next to me to see if I was OK and we chatted a bit. His wife was leaving the neighborhood, she pulled over and we all chatted a bit. She left then he invited me to his house just 2 streets over saying he had a bike lift and a lot of tools I was welcome to use, or just come on over to hang for a while. I graciously declined. Not even two miles down the road I was mad at myself. Why didn't I say, YES?!? I had told him what hotel I was heading for and he ended up contacting me and we had dinner together. Since then I've used that as a lesson, an example, why I need to say YES more. Love your videos. Thank you for sharing.
Great story!
Daniel, you’re killing it with these videos! So true about just putting yourself out there. Being older and a fairly new rider I’m building up the courage, or whatever you want to call it, to ride from PDX to Seattle next month to visit family. Just gotta do it, who knows what’s next in this life. I recognize NW West Union Rd in the beginning. I ride that one nearly everyday on my T120 black. It’s a blast!
Thank you! The route we took up to Seattle was a breeze. I can share it with you. We took a ferry over and it was amazing. The nice thing about the ferry is, you get to skip the line if you're on a motorcycle. You go right to the front, and you're the first to get off. And it's like $9! Best ever.
I’m still adventurous and daring at the tender young age of 65! As long as I have my facilities, strength, wisdom and knowledge, then I will continue to go for it! As far as fellow riders go, I can take them or leave them especially if I find them to be irresponsible and dangerous riders. Ride Your Ride and Keep The Rubber Side Down. ✌️
hell yeah bro get out of that comfort zone! You mentioned your trip last week so I've been waiting for this video, good stuff!
Thanks! Enjoying your vids a lot. Really dug the last one on riding tips. These are great bikes, eh?
@@BugMotoChannel Thanks bro likewise! I've already got 5 more videos queued up for the rest of the month and I'm working on a fun video project in the upcoming weeks, I think you'll really enjoy it once it's finished! But yeah man, I LOVE my scrambler so much, I honestly feel that it's my dream bike. Scrambler has always been my favorite flavor of motorcycle and with the modern electronics and fuel injection, it is literally perfect.
@@Magicks Hey, while I have you here... One thing about my Scrambler is, it pulls to the right when I take my hands off the bars. I'm told this might be an imbalance because of the weight of the stock exhaust. I've got slash-cut pipes on the way, so hoping that fixes the issue, but I find it insane that Triumph would ship a bike with a design flaw like this. Did you find the same issue when you had stock pipes on yours? I have a feeling it's something else - maybe a misaligned back wheel or something. It's in the shop right now to have that looked at, and also to have a starting issue sorted. It dies after the first start when it's cold. Seems like a software issue... (Otherwise, yeah, agreed, it's really perfect. Exactly what I wanted)
@@BugMotoChannel honestly I never noticed it pulling in either direction even when I had the stock pipe on but I also very rarely ride no handed, I always have one hand on the bars. I'll give it a test when I go for a ride later today. Wondering if maybe one of the rear shocks is at a different setting than the other as well, would be worth checking. I've been having the same cold start issues but now I just blip the throttle when it starts to sound like it's going to die and it keeps the engine going.
@@BugMotoChannel nope you're totally right, pulls to the right on mine as well. Gotta be cuz of the asymmetry for sure.
Thanks for sharing your journey to change you view of what can make you anxious about being social, accepted for who you are and open to new relationships. As a therapist and motorcycle rider I would say I have had the best time connecting with many bikers, and get why it has helped me get a little more extroverted - wanting to meet new people and experience being the genuine me. This has changed my social anxiety to almost no fear of being accepted. When I feel rejected it isn't a big deal - 'not everyone gets me'. I simply accept that some will and some will not. I see your posts as brave and important for most of us to consider. Entertaining too. Cheers, Reg
Thank you so much. Yeah, 'not everyone gets me' is an important thing I've come to realize, and sort of embrace. Feeling rejected is so much better than not being yourself.
Everyday is a gift, that is way they call it the PRESENT. Corney but true
The obvious and most appropriate comment is... YES!! Well done
I think I need some social lubrication. 😂
BugMoto is the Bilbo Baggins of motorcycles. GG Sir you got your adventure.
An excellent essay on the power riding has to change your life. All it takes is that first step and in your story saying "Yes." It's funny, as I write this comment I am wearing a black T-shirt with the word "No" on it. That word a reminder of humility in that God answers all prayers even though sometimes the answer is "No." But I digress.... Saying yes is important, especially for someone like me who probably isn't far from a similar place as you. And as my 70th birthday nears saying yes to things is more important than ever. Unfortunate medical circumstances at home though make it ever more difficult so say yes though. My most recent video posted a few days ago echoes a similar experience as yours albeit much shorter. But the powerful connections now available because of riding are there. And like you I've learned to leave my crystal ball packed away so I don't dwell so much on those "What ifs..." A great video Bug. I wish my audio could be so clean. And your channel is going gangbusters!
Thank you sir. I appreciate it. BTW, I've always found your audio to be top notch...
Yes!! I feel this so much! Riding has helped me so much. I honestly can’t believe I didn’t just crumble into an anxious puddle when my bike blew a fuse on my way back from Canada. But I really just stopped, breathed deep, and said “ok, how do I fix this”. So I did. And my Vespa has made me so many new introductions to new people! And I can go whenever I want! I’ll have a lot to say about this in my final video about my trip. Thank you for sharing this!!
I had the same feeling when I dumped my motorcycle a week or two back on a gravel road. I stood there looking at it, with an inflated air bag under my jacket, and instead of freaking, I kinda laughed and said, "Hmm. How am I gonna get myself out of this shit??" Taking that step back to understand the problem almost always leads to the solution. Freaking over it just leaves you baffled.
@@BugMotoChannel yes! It’s kinda amazing how it has happened. Glad you’re ok, too!
@@BugMotoChannel Yes, glad you're OK! Was this the new Triumph? Hopefully she/he is ok, too.
@@jftalarico It sure was. Just a scuffed muffler guard, but it was already scuffed. :)
This is a very insightful message and nicely delivered from the saddle of a motorcycle. I’m 73 and still dealing with this as an issue. It’s too easy to stay home, go on local rides, and then climb back into my big, comfortable chair at home. Unfortunately, that’s not where memories are made. Thanks for the inspiration!
Good message. I just got back from a five day trip to the Black Hills of South Dakota; never been there, it was on my bucket list. I rode completely alone. No back up, no one there if things went bad. I camped out except for one night. Had a complete blast. I put over 1600 miles on the bike. I ride all the time, usually daily, but never a long trip like that. It needed to be done. It was a great thing for my personal growth. I will say YES more and more now. Going solo was great; just me, the bike, and my thoughts.
Agreed! Saying 'yes' doesn't always mean saying 'yes' to other people. It also means saying 'yes' to yourself. That would have been good advice to add to my video...
As an older riding I ride a lot with people I don’t know that well even overnight rides , but for some reason I can never share a room with other people I always book a single room
It does not matter where you sleep. It is your time during the day when you interact with your fellow riders that matters! Ned in SC
Totally agree, and to be honest, I'd always choose a single room if I have the choice. I really, REALLY enjoy having my own space at night, especially after a long hard day.
Man your videos are the best
Thanks so much!
Nailed it again. Really enjoying your channel. The messages are spot on.
Awesome advice.
Four wheels move the body. Two wheels move the soul.
@@frantrictantric love this sentiment!
@@frantrictantric gotta agree with ya there! And my Yamaha xv250 is a great, dead-on reliable bike for me retired at 68.
People are like Motorcycles: each is customized a bit differently.
Some have parts that don't work so well. Some have issues getting started in the morning. Some can only run so long before they need a rest...
@@BugMotoChannel Excellent point but as long as you keep going no matter what is all that counts. 🙂
Young riders pick a destination and go... Old riders pick a direction and go.
I love this!
An awesome message for anyone, but especially for those of us who have made over 50 trips around the sun. Similarly, I've been trying to flip the script when I hear objections like "why do x?" when I want to try something new. When I ask "why not?", the objections rarely hold up. It's the reason I just got my motorcycle license - something I've wanted to do since I was a teenager, but always yielded to those "whys". It's the reason my wife and I have decided to sell our house and move to a dream location after spending 23 years in one spot. When you say yes, you start living actively instead of waiting for life to come to you. Thanks for this one, Bug.
My wife and I did the same thing in 2006. Left the place we both grew up in and headed west, 'just because.' Best decision we ever made.
@@BugMotoChannel I just got back from a dealership and got to sit on a couple. This will be my first, but I have been telling myself no for too long and just did it. Some guy on KZread reminded me to say YES. After throwing a leg over, I was in love. Is that crazy? I think not. Haven't pulled the trigger yet, but I'm pretty sure it's happening soon. :P And yes, I'm still talking about motorcycles.
@@jftalarico You and me both man! I'm 68 and bought my V Star 250 two years ago. Signed up for beginners course at LCCC down the street. Early August.
Are you ready for the return of Jesus Christ. Means Do you have a personal relationship with Jesus Christ and are you walking in all the light or truth that you have Mat 7:21-23 “Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only the one who does the will of my Father who is in heaven. 22 Many will say to me on that day, ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name and in your name drive out demons and in your name perform many miracles?’ 23 Then I will tell them plainly, ‘I never knew you. Away from me, you evildoers!’ And are you studying God's word daily so that you can learn what His will is for you and are you sharing what you have been shown by the Holy Spirit with those who are receptive to it and complete surrender. Complete surrender of our free will choices, by doing God will, instead of our own will, is a requirement to salvation and a requirement to being transformed into the image and character of Jesus Christ. Mat 7:21 “Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only the one who does the will of my Father who is in heaven. Mat 7:22-23 Many will say to me on that day, ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name and in your name drive out demons and in your name perform many miracles?’ 23 Then I will tell them plainly, ‘I never knew you. Away from me, you evildoers!’ And are you doing the will of my Father who is in heaven by obeying what you have been shown and have learned And are you working on overcoming all sin in your life and being transformed into the image and character of Jesus Christ. If the answer is yes to all of the questions above then you are running the race of faith all the days of your life as the one who get the prize which is eternal life with Jesus Christ our Lord. Beloved: Salvation is a 2 step process. The 1st step in the process of salvation is being justified by what Christ which happens when a person accepts Jesus Christ as their person savior. And after being justified by what Christ did by accepting Jesus Christ as your personal savior. The next step in salvation is sanctification. And Sanctification is a moment by moment and a day by day process of obedience to the will of God out of love ALL of the days of your life after accepting Jesus Christ as your personal savior. And To Repent of sin, means to ask The Son of God who is Jesus Christ incarnate for forgiveness of sin and he wants us to be literal about the sin that we are asking Him to be forgiven of and part of asking for forgiveness also means that we will give up in our lives whatever sin it is that we are asking to be forgiven of. Again Salvation is a 2 step process. The 1st step in the process of salvation is being justified by what Christ which happens when a person accepts Jesus Christ as their person savior. And after being justified by what Christ did by accepting Jesus Christ as your personal savior. The next step in salvation is sanctification. And Sanctification is a moment by moment and a day by day process of obedience to the will of God by doing the will of God out of love ALL of the days of your life after accepting Jesus Christ as your personal savior. And Our mission is to study the word of God so that we can share the word of God with those who are receptive to it and to be transformed into the character of Jesus Christ by our choices and by our actions. Mat 28:18 Then Jesus came to them and said, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. 19 Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.” The character we form in this world by our choices and actions will determine our destiny for eternity. Our future is determined by the way in which we now allow ourselves to be transformed into the image and character of Jesus Christ. which is why every person who says they follow Christ is to be transformed into the image and character of Jesus Christ by their choices and by their actions on a moment by moment and on a day by day basis with the help of the Holy Spirit. It is what we do, action wise, today, till we die that determines if we have accepted, the gift of salvation or not, God's grace, forgiveness and eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord. is dependent on our belief and actions Those who choose not to become like Jesus Christ in character; Must know that their profession to follow Jesus Christ is a fraud. Obedience to the will of God out of Love is a requirement of those who would be saved. God knows our wants, needs and our desires, and He can read our heart, mind, and soul, and He knows our motives, our intentions and our desires by our actions. Jesus estimates the purity of motive, thoughts and actions and the character that we posse. which is used along with the things written in the books which determines if we have accepted the gifts described above. He looks to see how much of His Spirit and character is in us by our actions How much of His likeness of character is in our life which is revealed in us by our actions. To be great in God’s kingdom is to be as a little child in humility, in simplicity of faith, and in purity of love. And what you have done for those whom you think to be the least worthy of your help you have done unto the Lord. Therefore whoever wishes to be a friend of the world makes himself an enemy of God." James 4:4, KJV 1 John 2:15 Do not love the world or anything in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. Matthew 6:24 No one can serve two masters: Either you will hate the one and love the other, or you will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God, the world and money.
I was seeing a therapist after bad breakup, and then i bought a horse and no longer needed a therapist. I ride horses and motorcycles.
The guy who made this video said he thought sometimes that he was too old to ride, but he sounds like he’s 35. If you’re thinking about hanging it up now just wait until you’re 60 or even older.
Brilliant theme and so well constructed!
Thanks.
I've been riding in the SF bay area since 2004. Im 59 and still going strong - with four bikes in the stable!
Just got my first ever motorcycle… at 68YO. Life is good
I turned 71 in May. I have been riding bikes for 50 years now. I've had everything from a 90 cc Enduro all the way up to a Suxuki GS 1000L . Currently I ride a Royal Enfield Meteor 350. It is the perfect bike for me at 71. When I ride I usually go out for 60-90 minutes. That is enough to lift my spirits and remind me of how great riding a bike is. I'd like to say it makes me feel like I'm 20 again. Unfortunately it only makes me feel about 40 LOL. I've thought about giving it up but I just can't. Ride as long as you can and stay safe out there.
I just tienes turned 50, but I don't feel old, however, I do feel like, there's a lot of things I can do, until I start doing it, riding a bike, it's good therapy to clear your head, great video, thank you
Since my riding partner, my brother passed some years ago, I continue to ride all over the country. In his honor I’ll continue till I can’t. Love you brother….
excellent video. Im 64 and riding
Distraction therapy
I'm in my 60's .I couldn't imagine not riding . Life would get very painfull.
I am 58. 2023 wing. Its the only peace i have apart from the lord
I stopped riding bikes after getting hit twice from the rear end while they were texting on their phone😮
I see so many people riding motorcycles that don't even know how to ride! Like yourself! Need to take a training course ride like a pro!
