The boys are sounding great. Dusty would be proud of how well Elwood has gelling in his new role.

Um...you know why they're sounding great? I love old ZZ Top, too, but, hate to break it to you man, but this performance is MOSTLY, like at least 90% miming to pre-recorded files. It's loaded with pre-recorded vocals, synths, the famous drum machines/programming from “Eliminator” engineer Terry Manning, and lots of backing guitars. Brace yourself: even lead vocals and lead guitar are faked, mostly with material since “Eliminator” of which this is. Their extended jams and 70’s material is live and they do play ALONG with the pre-recorded stuff, but their live playing is mixed far behind the pre-recorded elements. Even in this video, backing guitars are clearly heard behind the solo, and backing vocals (far more than 2 singers) are clearly heard in the choruses. If you pay attention, you’ll also notice a couple of seconds where the guitar solo is still going while Gibbons right hand is off the guitar as he points at bassist Elwood. It’s commonly known that ZZ Top have done lots of mimed and lip synced performances, predominantly on tour, since about ‘83. Again, this isn’t to say you won’t see a special, short, studio performance, or collaborative performance where they’re playing all live. But on tour? Mostly synced and mimed. It's sad, and what i call an industry problem. But most fans, maybe you too, don't care if their faves are singing or playing live, or playing along quietly behind pre-recorded tracks. Google “Zz Top lip-sync” and you’ll see lots about it. If you don't care, that's fine, just don't say they're "sounding great" when it's just digital files. As far as Dusty, well, you should know that he's not even on the Eliminator recordings much, if at all. Frank beard either. Ham and Manning essentially replaced Hill's and Beard's contributions on that record with synths, drum machine programming, and samples, in post-production with Billy Gibbons. The same can be said with "Afterburner," and others. This is all well known and documented. In the 70's, they were a down home, blues rock band. But since '83 they're an Electronic blues-pop band. Cool to listen to, but i'm not into lip-synced and mimed music performances, personally.

@@XXjg_ XX: I am familiar with what you’re saying, but I think you are being a bit hard on the boys. I know that ZZ Top has used backing tracks and pre-recorded vocals for many of the songs from their “live” performances since the Eliminator era. However, I have watched probably thousands of ZZ Top live performances and I am quite certain that Billy does not use prerecorded lead guitar, I’ve always seen him playing live. He does use backing tracks with some prerecorded guitar parts and synth sounds on certain songs for sure. But you referenced hearing guitar sounds when his right hand is not strumming the strings. That’s been one of his favorite moves for many years, his left hand on the frets is what is making the sound at that point. Notably, Dusty also used some prerecorded bass parts also on their backing tracks. I noticed quite a bit of this on the tour immediately prior to Dusty’s death, very noticeable on Pearl Necklace. ZZ Top has always had an unbelievably full large sound during their live performances for a three-piece band. To keep their performances sounding good live, they really needed to use some of the backing tracks. Regarding the vocals, Billy had some very serious problems with his voice in the late 90s and early 2000’s. If you see any of his truly live vocal performances around that time, you’ll see that his voice was sounding very rough, cutting out much of the time. I think he really came to rely heavily upon prerecorded vocals for much or all of their live performances at that time. But he seems to have rehabilitated his voice somewhat since then. I’ve seen quite a few performances from their current tour where he is clearly singing certain songs live (e.g., I’m Bad I’m Nationwide; Gotsta Get Paid; Brown Sugar; and even Tube Snake Boogy) which is nice to see.

@@jasonk75 I agree with you. Listen to the track "Legs" at this concert which is a separate recording that Dead Mike did as it was their final song. Billy definately does not play the chorus exactly the same way as it was on the recording. I don't think the primary three instruments are prerecorded after hearing that track. Now as far as the programming from Eliminator goes, that is the same as it was back then so that is definately pulled from their album - at least the way it is done. However there is NO drum machine here - that is definately Frank Beard playing. You don't play that hard and fake it.

all i can say is the sound is tight, they must be in their seventies by now and i certainly wouldn't be disappointed by a ticket to their show.
