I have this camera....bought January of 2023. Evidentlty they modified the camera quite a bit. The case is larger diameter and they addressed the dewing you experienced. I have yet to experience any dewing and I cool to -10 degrees normally. It does have a heater for the protective glass that will deal with that if you get it (never needed it thus far). Also my version includes the tilting front plate which is a huge benefit for those needing to square up the chip with the image plane....or in my case to tilt it to avoid Newton Rings for Ha solar imaging (common problem for Ha imaging). Thus far I haven't seen any disadvantages and I like the two USB output ports built in which I use for my autoguide camera and EAF. I run everthing from a ASI AIR Plus with latest firm ware update and the mount is a AM5 which I really find excellent. Normally I use a Astro Physics 1100 with a 6" APO refractor, flat field lens, and a huge full frame motorized filter wheel SBIG camera. That has ability way beyond this setup BUT it is wonderful in my observatory but the other setup is SO nice for travel to remote sites. In my case the entire 80mm APO scope, flat field lens, imaging camera, EAF, 60mm guide scope and camera stays together as one piece completely wired. All I have to do is place that assembly on my tripod, plug in the battery power supply and I am in business. Takes me about a minute to set this up, polar align is a breeze in about 5 minutes....and start imaging. Results are terrific as long as you don't need a long focal length large aperture scope. A 8" SCT with Hyperstar is a great combo with it also.

Nice review! I’ve had this camera for over a year now and I currently use it with my EdgeHD 800 with a .7x reducer, bringing the focal length to about 1470. I love my camera. Over time you might still see frost even at -5C. The only way I avoid it is slow cooling, like 1C every minute or 2. The pixel size is actually 4.78, I think you said 4.72 in the video.

Thanks Michael. That sounds like a nice combination then with the edgeHD for sure! Just on the limit then. I've yet to see any condensation at -5°c but I did try the cool very slowly approach once and it just wasted half an hour as the sensor still condensed 😅

Nice review that I was happy to see. I purchased the ASI071MC Pro about 2 months ago as my move from a DSLR to dedicated astro camera. Picked the ASI071 for the reasons mentioned - matched the Canon 700D I previously used closely for pixel count and sizing plus 14bit and low amp glow. The price hurt but I am happy so far. I use it at -5C and unity gain. No issues with frost but I do use a stepped cool down sequence that takes about 20 minutes since frosting seemed to be the main issue that came up in the limited information I found before purchasing. One thing I have noticed is that I see more vignetting using it with my ES ED102 than I did with the 700D. Flats take care of it though.

Nice camera! The lack of amp glow weighed strongly in its favour when I was planning to make the leap from a DSLR. In the end the fact that most of my imaging is done with 80mm or 1200mm (W/ 0.8x reducer) I opted for the ASI533MC Pro. The lack of amp glow and lower cost of that camera made the transition decision easier to justify. I see an APS-C as the next step down the road a ways but for now the 533 makes sense as a learning tool. Thanks for the summary. This review was helpful, and had I seen it before I made my purchase it would not have altered my decision.

Thanks for the comment David. Yeah it's certainly a good camera I find! Funnily enough when I was looking to buy a camera I was torn between the 533 and 071 also. Having had used a 533 I knew what it was capable of but decided to give the 071 a go. Don't regret my decision though!

Thanks for the review. I have the same camera (love it) and experience many of the same things you mentioned, both good and bad. Overall, I think it's a great camera and the 071 was my transition from DSLR to dedicated AP camera, as you mentioned. I learned several things from your review, but I would like to hear more about exposure times for some of your images shot with it at unity gain.

Very nice review! If you can afford it the ASI071MC is much better than the ASI294MC; no extra tweaking during processing to lose the amp glow patterns. If you live in a humid area, the frost on the sensor can be a problem if you don't cool slowly, but it will dissipate over time (~30-45 min.). Drying the pellets plus cleaning the sensor surface and inner side of the AR window help a lot. But the camera does warm quickly if your sequence kicks off for any disruption. But be advised you'll probably need 2" filters to avoid vignetting over the other cameras mentioned which can use 1.25". But smaller sensors like the 533 also serve a purpose if you are going after small targets, like during spring galaxy season. But all said, the ASI071MC is a super nice camera to have ++.

Thanks John and nice additions in your comments. I believe if you had an 071 and a 533 then you'd have all the bases covered I reckon! 😁 But yes j have noticed how fast that sensor warms up if something happens, quite alarming actually haha

Always look foward to your videos, i use the 183 mc-pro the amp glow is a pain, but can be removed i like the 20mp sensor with those tiny 2.4 micron pixels i have 2 scopes, but my fav because im lazy is pairing it with my samyang 135 F/2 and an IDAS NBZ filter, i gives me a focal length of just over 360mm and at F/2 can bash out subs fast.

Thanks Andrew. Yeah my 183mm Pro review is coming in the coming weeks but the 183 is a bit of a beast to tame especially when you see your first long subs and there's loads of glow everywhere. Always seems dramatic! But that small portable rig you got with the 183 and 135mm sounds immense!

I was watching your video as I'm in the market for a new cooled color camera. My QHY 268C has started having issues with the sensor. All my images are coming out with a big dark line across the bottom of the image and along each side. The left hand side of the image is worse that the right hand side. The only part of the image not effected is the top. Anyway, I saw the price on the ASI 071MC Pro and I liked the size of the pixel as large pixel cameras in the APS-C size are somewhat hard to come by. I have an 8" Edge HD and with the .7 reducer, it just fits in your range at 1422mm in focal length. I think ZWO may be making the ASI 071MC Pro obsolete soon. I've seen some web sites showing as discontinued. Another reason for getting it now. ;0)

Right now I'm testing the QHY247C vs ASI2600MC pro through an Optplong L Extreme and I must say the 247C is pretty amazing. Though the 247C images are slightly noisier I get substantially more DATA from each sub vs the 2600. Maybe the larger pixels or QE of 74% is enough to be negligible. Also during testing, the 247 gain was set to well under unity ( 1000--By accident)! I don't make videos but would be nice if someone looked into the 247C. I'm def. not sold on the 2600 after messing with the 247 and 2600 side by side. The QHY has much better overall construction and over designed cooling.. The 2600 cooler at 80% for -10 vs 15% on the 247..

See M42 with an IDAS NBX filter here instagram.com/p/CNd7ppyJ2ph/? and some other images as well. Sensor windows frosting can be solved cooling slowly, while aligning and focusing. I usually cook down to -10C and here (Bogotá, Colombia) ambient humidity is usually more than 80%. Keep this videos coming! Regards, Alfredo

I know what you mean. I never noticed the window heater working but others have stated if you stick at it and begin shooting then the condensation will clear up. And ZWO just doesn't put power cables in the box. The optimist in me says it's so they can sell the camera anywhere and not worry about local plugs. The skeptic in me says it's so they can charge you another £30 for a plug 🙄
