The solution is easy. If these illegal cars cause an accident. They should automatically forefit their car to the other person for compensation.

I say they should immediately forfeit the vehicle when found with counterfeit plates. They know it’s fake!! They aren’t getting them registered because they can’t, and they know it. SIEZE the cars. Put them up for auction and then keep all monies made auctioning them off should go into a fund that will continue to pay salaries to cops taking them off the street.

Like a crashed car worth $ 300 if you deliver it to a scrap yard is going to fully compensate the owner of 2 year old car that is totaled.

Solution is to require every temp tag to have a security seal with serial number on each one... State issues security seals to dealers and are responsible for them. Like a hologram of some sort with a antitamper perferations in them.

There is a solution. if you need a plate, go to a DMV or state office and get a real plate. If they're saying, the solution is impossible, they're lying hard. There are states that don't use temp tags. So saying "its impossible" is a bold faced lie

This is dumb. If LA uses paper tags that anyone can print out, they will NEVER stop the problem. They need to do what other states do, stop using PAPER and use an actual PLATE, like PA.

Impound the vehicles for no less than 30 days at owner's expense (1st offense then double, triple for subsequent offenses), arrest driver and leave in jail 90 days like its listed here (1st offense then double, triple for subsequent offenses), $1,500 fine (1st offense then double, triple for subsequent offenses), and charge with felony (then upgrade to higher felonies if applicable), for fraudulent government document. It's just as bad if not worse in Texas.

You could prohibit paper temps, but people have 3D printers now that can duplicate hard plates.

When recording an accident, also record the vehicle VIN number. VIN numbers are traceable to real owners.

not really, I got a call a couple years ago about my abandoned vehicle that had been in a wreck, I had sold the car in 2006 - no idea the next 15 years it was never registered to anyone else

Couple years ago people was able to get license plates and insurance with a passport not any more since they stop that we start getting this problem and can’t have a control over

It's difficult because now we have illegals , with zero identification.. who shouldn't be on the roads. The law had to change... Passport holders really shouldn't be driving here either unless they have insurance.

Is this what NOPD considers a priority? With all the actual crimes with real victims. Maybe because solving real crime doesn't pay, enforcing violations that have no real victims creates revenue.

Look at it from a different prospective. Why are they doing it? Most likely the state’s costs are oppressive.

Why? Because the penalty is minimal... make the penalty substantial and that will end.

Like another commenter said, if they hit someone they forfeit the car. Doesn't do much in major crashes though. But I also say fake tag = car towed+hefty fine. I lost my car and job because some so & so with no insurance, license, and wasn't even supposed to be in the country did an illegal blind u-turn.
