My first connection of seeing this video! If he was Buzz's dad, he probably would still destroy him but not kill him I mean unless if he thought he was a mistake.

Since Zurg is a parody of Vader, I had a feeling he used to be a space ranger, but Star Command screwed him over somehow and he became a powerful cyborg after merging with some evil AI or something.

As you probably already guesse, I feel like that whole "I am your father thing" was originally put in Toy story mainly as a Star Wars reference along with Zurgs similarities to Darth Vader with both being hald human/half machine. That was all reference at first and they slowly built on it, but Zurg was most likely never originally meant to be and isn't Buzz's father, just a toy malfunction and his trickery to beat Buzz

to be honest, I didn't get that when I first saw toy story 2. When I was watching it with my family, and they laughed at that part, I was so confused. Then they said it was from star wars and explained it to me... but then I thought star wars stole it from toy story... then my uncle had to educate me on star wars and the movie marathon begun.

Zurg definitely isn't Buzz's father, I do however feel he secretly connects to Buzz like a father, since even though Zurg is always plotting against him and calling him mean things, he does one thing that other villains don't, and that is over estimate and believe in Buzz. Nos4A2 mentions this in the one episode where the vampire robot basically almost takes over the galaxy, the vampire himself is Zurg's son since Zurg created him, but instead of a connection there, Nos4A2 rebels and over throws his father, this kind of makes me believe Zurg mightve done this in the past to his own father, regretting it in the present since he clearly is someone who doesn't like to do things alone and really has no other relations other than his coworkers. He acts diabolical but deep down is sad and lonely and retains having a bond to someone in having an arch enemy, the only thing that's keeping him going, in a twisted way i think he really admires Buzz and will always trust him to get any job done

Zurg would probably still try to destroy Buzz Lightyear, if Buzz was his son. Think about. A evil family member who wants to destroy the good member or members of their family in order to achieve whatever their evil goal is, will not care about their family, the villian will toss his or her family aside in order to succeed.

One of my favorite movie quotes of all time came from a Brain Pod in the Buzz Lightyear movie: "Let's leave the brain work to those with the brains, shall we?"

I think Zurg could be a cyborg in a similar vain to General Grevious from Star Wars. General Grevious was once part of an alien race called the "Kaleesh" who was in a starship crash and after agreeing to help Count Dooku and Darth Sidious was rebuilt as a cyborg. Maybe something like that?

I appreciate you making this video!! For so long, I have questioned if Zurg was really Buzz's dad or if Toy Story 2 was just making a Star Wars reference. Thank you! :)

It's pretty complicated, Isaac. But, if Zurg was Buzz' father, I think he would still try to destroy him. And that's a pretty good story about evil emperor Zurg.

I actually really like Zurg. I like his design and his one liners in the cartoon too.

My head canon always was that he’s actually one of the Grubs from the animated series that he rules over. He actually wears that giant robot suit so he can appear intimidating to his enemies.

Pixar supposedly wasn't huge fans of this cartoon so it is unlikely any of these characters would show up

Disney didn't have to go so damn hard on their spin off show but I'm so glad they did.

I have a theory, that the Zurg toy was programmed before the plot point about him being Buzz's father was scrapped. The TV show simply left it in as an inside joke.

If he is not Buzz's dad, what happened to the Zurg and Buzz that went off to bond in the movie?

You've got to separate Toy Story canon and BLOSC canon. So while in Toy Story lore Zurg may be Buzz's father, in BLOSC lore he definitely isn't.

I feel like Zurg's robotic enhancements are self-inflicted. You see, I invision a Zurg not only obsessed with the idea of total galactic conquest, but the idea that the organic body can be upgraded into something that could help aid in galactic conquest.

Pixar is making a new Buzz Lightyear movie by 2022. From what little we know it won't be a copy of this movie but will be a new origin story for Buzz Lightyear. So we might also get the origin of Zurg.

Unfortunately this is nothing that I didn't know after binge-watching the entire Buzz Lightyear of Star Command series back in September. Me personally, I don't know how far that series actually IS canon to the Toy Story movies or not... I have some theories... 1; because its clear that the Toys from Toy Story ARE in fact watching the Buzz Lightyear cartoon show, it establishes that the Toy-Line came first and the show was made afterwards to help capitalize on the brand and market more toys. Buzz and the Zurg we saw from Toy Story 2 are effectively 1st Generation Toys in the Buzz Lightyear line, and thus have the ORIGINAL story that the toy-developers intended for the characters. BUT I have a feeling that idea was scrapped for the cartoon show, because it presented a far too "heavy" story-line for the show's intended audience. Zurg was considerably changed from his original "darker" incarnation to be much more comedic and child-friendly. But even more than that, such a heavy reveal of a paternal lineage between the two, would have the fans clambering for an answer as to When, Where and HOW it happened...and the show quite frankly wasn't prepared to answer any of those questions. So the original concept was scrapped in favor of a more episodic and light-hearted series. Plus - and I think Toy Story 2 shows us this - given Zurg's personality, I don't think it would make all that much sense for Buzz and Zurg to keep fighting each other once this was revealed, as Zurg ends up taking on a more fatherly attitude towards the Second Buzz - given how "campy" the Cartoon Zurg is, I could easily see that happening... Theory 2; is that maybe it was all a game of Psychological Torture for Buzz; a way for Zurg to get under his skin and possibly prevent him from ever truly giving his all to defeat him. Let's say that Zurg was pulling a "Thulsa Doom" from Conan the Barbarian; Thulsa is the man who killed Conan's entire family and village, so Conan returns as a man seeking revenge. But because he's dedicated his entire life to getting Thulsa, in a sense, Thulsa has created him and he would be nothing without him. "For who now is your father if not me?" It could be that Buzz was motivated to join the Space Rangers after Zurg had attacked his home planet, possibly killing those he loved. So he joined up so that he could dedicate his life to trying to get Zurg; thus Zurg created him and in a sense, is his Father. Course, I still prefer to think that Zurg actually IS Buzz's father in some way or form. My headcanon is that Zurg - rather than an actual being - is more or less a Concept or an Idea...There has always been an Evil Emperor Zurg who has been threatening the Galaxy. He draws his power from Planet Z - the source of his Empire. However, Zurg could be anyone since all he is, is a man in a suit and a mask...So every now and then, whatever force of Good rises in the Galaxy to counter Zurg manages to defeat him, the cycle begins again, with the Supreme Beings that perpetuate the conflict abducting the current champion - in this case, Aldrin Lightyear (Buzz's Father) - and Brainwashing him to serve as the NEW Zurg. Hell, there are actually TWO species introduced in the Buzz Lightyear cartoon that could've actually served this purpose. And I think the existence of Evil Buzz actually corroborates this story - only instead of Aldrin falling victim to the cycle, it was Buzz himself...(if you ignore the fact that Evil-Verse Zurg is working at the Diner.)

the toy line never came 1st. it is established in toy story 1 that buzz is a product of intellectual property. the world's greatest superhero is now the world's greatest toy.

man i got nervous there for a minute that Zurg was Buzz's father XD (ala star wars?!?!?!?!?)

This is what I think... Zurg originally was a normal citizen, who met a woman who eventually became his wife. He was an extremely good scientist and was amazing at constructing things. After marrying his now wife, they had a child named Buzz. After only one year after Buzz' birth, there was an attack from Star Command. Zurg, using his robots and weapons, decided to fight back. He encountered the main commander of Star Command and they had a huge fight over a huge lava river. Eventually, the commander's weapons were too strong and he managed to defeat Zurg. Zurg was dropped into a the lava River and was severely burnt. His robots recovered him and brought him back to his base, where he was re-built as a cyborg. His legs were completely burnt off, so he used a metal dress with wheels to move. As soon as he was re-built, he returned to his house to find his wife and child. When he arrived, the house was in flames. He entered the building, fighting through the fire to his child's bedroom. Buzz was gone, along with his wife. He was heartbroken. He knew that Star Command had done it. He decided to build a massive Empire to destroy Star Command and, well... Just find his son. Sadly, after a few years, the robotics inside him took over his mind and coursed him to turn almost completely robot and evil. It was supposed to be based on Star Wars, as Zurg is pretty much Darth Vader... Like this comment if you... Well... Like it!

Even though he appeared in two movies, 2 as a secondary antagonist and 3 a cameo, and A show I only saw the movie of (I need to see if I can watch some here on KZread.), Zurg is my fav Toy Story character. I don't know why... I just do. I wish they made him playable in Disney Infinity. I would have loved to play as him.

@@Vigriff It's highly possible. Because these two characters were written by the same producers. Also speaking of that I am pretty sure Shego and Warp Darkmatter would have made a pretty nice couple! And suprise-suprise both Mira and Shego were voiced by the same actress!

I can't believe you actually used clips of Buzz Lightyear of Star Command! I loved that show and the movie when I was kid! I was obsseesd with Toy Story 1 and 2 and I would watch Buzz Lightyear of Star Command on ABC on Saturday mornings and on Disney Channel. Nobody ever mentions this show, and I don't get why not many liked it. The show is clever and it is hilarious, I recently watched some episodes again, and I still think the show is great.

He's a pretty cool hammy villain, and his cartoon VA is Wayne Knight. I think if Buzz and Zurg were related it be something similar to the Lego Ninjago movie with La-loyd and Garmadon.

Is it just me, or does Zurg sound like a fusion of Darth Vader and General Grievous? Cyborg/robot villains who hire bounty hunters. And the Hornets are basically battle droids

I always strongly believed that Zurg could be Buzz's father but I wonder what Zurg will look like in the new Lightyear movie coming in 2022 we don't know yet but they haven't announced the rest to this upcoming movie i know it's gonna be the orign of buzz and i don't know if he's gonna be a lost family member or just some villain who had a strong hatred against everyone and want to destroy and rule the galaxy so bad ,if there actually gonna plan to have Zurg to be the dad to Buzz they better be careful not to try to rip off another character who also had that iconic catch phrase "i am your father " i also have a crazy theory to the Buzz Lightyear of star command series like what if Zurg really is Buzz Lightyear's father like he was once an ordinary space ranger until he was brainwashed to become the evil emperor that we all know and forgotten everything he knew before like his wife and not knowing Buzz being his child caused i been reading pretty cool fan stories on devianart, and I really wish the Buzz Lightyear of star command series is on Disney + that way I can watch the episodes clear without the giant mouse logo in the way and the bad crappy quality , it's a really good show in my opinion maybe there's no reason for Pixar to hate it ,

7:03, that’s a good question. We know Nana Zurg was “plenty evil” and that Zurg fondly remembers his mother who called him Agent Z and her “evil bedtime stories” about Natron the First. So I think it might give Zurg some pause if Buzz were actually his son but I also suspect that Buzz standing in Zurg’s way (assuming Buzz would be the same Buzz Lightyear if that happened) would be enough that Zurg would stop caring.

In the tv show there was a moment when Buzz and Zurg were fighting, and right as he was about to lose the fight Zurg said "I am your father". This caused Buzz to pause in shock, only for Zurg to sucker punch him and knock him over the edge, yelling "Psyche! Made you look!"

If he really was his father maybe they wouldn't be enemies because in blosc, Zurg seems to get really sentimental and emotional about his family (even tho it's played for laughs but it's apparently true that he has/had actual family members), he even gets emotional when he talks about creating NOS -4-A2. so like maybe he wouldn't be acting how he does towards Buzz if he really was his son.

Buzz lightyear was the first cartoon hero I looked up to. I wanted to be a space ranger so bad and remember training in the backyard to fight zurg. When i went to Disney world for the first time, and only time so far, all i wanted was a buzz lightyear pin and to get his signature. That was the cloud nine of my life. I have the movie that introduced the series and loved the ride!

May i make up an origin story for Zurg? His original name was Likus, a gifted student, fluent in the art of machines, so much so that he became one after his friend almost killed him in battle. He was originally apprentice to the first Emperor Zurg, before betraying and destroying him.

Zurg corrupts the Uni-Mind, so he can use it to control minds, while his scientists start making a "Mega-Ray" to use the corrupted Uni-Mind to bend entire populations of people to Zurg's will. Mira and Buzz each attempt to steal the Alpha-One prototype spacecraft; Mira wins and leaves with it. Buzz pursues Mira in his own craft, not realizing Booster and XR are inside it, having entered it to play make-believe. Eventually, Buzz catches Mira and stores Alpha-One in his spaceship's cargo bay; Booster and XR are discovered also. Zurg's Mega-Ray subverts several planets in quick successions such as Rizone and Batheous. He then turns it on Star Command, enjoying the irony of watching his greatest enemies become his mouthpieces. Buzz, Mira, Booster, and XR see the Mega-Ray's beam strike Star Command and enter it to discover its effects. They discover all of the staff have been suborned by Zurg; they flee in Buzz's Star Cruiser. Zurg uses Star Command's entire arsenal, planting a bomb on Buzz's ship. Buzz and the others escape in the Alpha-One just before the bomb detonates, destroying the cruiser. Not knowing Buzz has escaped the bomb blast, Zurg believes he is actually dead and moves on. Booster accidentally causes the ship to crash-land on Planet Z. There, Buzz insists on finishing the mission alone. When they start to argue over something ridiculous, Buzz orders them to leave. Buzz fights Agent Z, but he is shocked when Agent Z removes his helmet, revealing himself as Warp Darkmatter. Taking advantage of Buzz's momentary confusion at this, Warp knocks him out and delivers him to Zurg. Warp explains that not only had he faked his death at the beginning of the film, but was secretly working for Zurg for years as a double agent. When Zurg mocks Buzz, Buzz responds by dictating his "final log entry". Zurg and Warp watch in amusement, but Mira, Booster, and XR hear Buzz's surrender and his final entry (which includes a coded plead for help). Zurg plans to use the "Mega-ray" on Buzz, but XR and Booster arrive in time to rescue him as it fires. Booster and Mira destroy Warp's mechanical arm after Booster lands on him. Buzz and Zurg face each other; Zurg thinks he has won, but Buzz and his three friends surround Zurg and pronounce him under arrest, but Zurg escapes through a distraction. Zurg triumphantly declares if Buzz goes to any planet, he can hear his voice mocking him. Booster and XR capture Warp and leap from Zurg's now-exploding tower. Buzz Lightyear of Star Command Emperor Zurg in the series Buzz Lightyear of Star CommandEVIL RULES! Zurg is the main antagonist of the TV series Buzz Lightyear of Star Command, in which he rules over Planet Z and wants to take over the entire universe. His subjects are Grubs, which are similar to Star Command's Little Green Men, Brain Pods, who work for him as scientists and researchers, and an army of Hornets, which are his robotic foot soldiers used for battle. This incarnation of Zurg is a flamboyant villain who often breaks the seriousness of his evil statements, and is just as much a comic relief character as he is a formidable opponent. In one of his scantest appearances in a Buzz Lightyear episode, Zurg is considered to be the chief suspect in the disappearance of various senators, but Zurg scoffs at "Kidnapping politicians? Even I would not stoop to that!" then challenges all his underlings if they were doing such a stunt behind his back by saying, "Come on, everyone, out with it!" He is known for videotaping Buzz's speeches so he can secretly mock him, and in one episode tells Buzz that he is his father during a fight (just like he did in Toy Story 2), only to gain the upper hand by using the statement as a "Made You Look" moment to trick Buzz, which strongly suggests that he is not of Buzz's parentage, and that only the toy from the movie believed himself to be the father of the Buzz toy. Despite his campy nature, he is still widely considered the evilest person in the galaxy. Disney INFINITY Emperor Zurg is one of the villains that appear in Disney INFINITY. He is a part of the final mission in the Toy Story in Space playset after the player conquers all of the simulation missions. He appears as a giant version of himself in the skies above the alien planet, unable to be attacked or interacted with. The player has to gather the batteries to convert the great tower in the alien city into a shrink ray. Once powered up, the laser is fired and Zurg is shrunk down to toy size and later given to Buzz as a trophy for their heroics. However, soon after, he comically attacks everyone with blasts from his blaster before scurrying off to who knows where. In the 3DS version, he appears on a game board where the player must start up the shield generators and beat Zurg. He also a character is faced off against in the adventure games. Trivia Before Zurg made his first appearance in Toy Story 2, he was mentioned in the first Toy Story movie. An earlier version of him is shown in an alternate opening of the first film. In 2012, The Disney Store released a talking Zurg action figure that was sold separately from a talking Buzz action figure. Zurg's character may appear to draw from Darth Vader, a main villain in the Star Wars original trilogy, with a similar voice, appearance, and set of mannerisms. In the first Toy Story, Buzz Lightyear mentions that Zurg is building a "weapon with the destructive capacity to annihilate an entire planet," making a reference to the Death Star in Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope. In the video game at the beginning of Toy Story 2 and when confronting Andy's Toys, later on, Zurg says, "So, we meet again, Buzz Lightyear, for the last time!" referring to what Darth Vader said to Obi-Wan Kenobi in Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope ("I've been waiting for you, Obi-Wan. We meet again at last."). As Zurg and Utility Belt Buzz battle, the former lifts the latter off the floor by his "neck," and Buzz uses both hands to try to wrench Zurg's hand off him. In the Buzz Lightyear of Star Command episode "Stranger Invasion", Zurg only briefly claims to be Buzz Lightyear's father in order to distract him during battle. After doing so, he knocks Buzz over and mocks him for actually falling for it, hinting that Zurg may not actually be Buzz Lightyear's father, and Pixar just wanted to make a Star Wars reference. He and Palpatine are both emperors with the same title. Zurg, being the main antagonist of Buzz Lightyear of Star Command and Buzz Lightyear of Star Command: The Adventure Begins, makes him the second main Toy Story villain to be a toy, after Stinky Pete, the overall main antagonist of Toy Story 2. Zurg's voice actor in Buzz Lightyear of Star Command is Wayne Knight, who voiced Al McWhiggin in Toy Story 2. Knight is perhaps most famous for playing Dennis Nedry, an antagonist in Jurassic Park. Zurg is the only Toy Story 2 villain to appear in Toy Story 3, as Stinky Pete and Al do not appear once, nor are they mentioned. When looking at the shot where Zurg is about to finish the Buzz #2 off, it is noticeable that the levels on his gun are numbered to 11, a reference to Nigel Tufnel's amplifier in This is Spinal Tap. Zurg was actually to have a slightly bigger role in Toy Story 3, according to the original script. He was one of the recalled toys along with Buzz Lightyear. A quite insane Zurg was the first one to introduce Buzz to his ultimate fate of not being repaired but sent to the toy crusher. Much easier to just ship out a new one than actually repair the recalled toys. The character may also be based on Emperor Ming in the 1980 film Flash Gordonbecause he sports a cape similar to that of Ming's and is referred to as "Emperor". During Woody's nightmare earlier in the film, some of the mismatched toy arms in the trash can Woody was discarded in belonged to Zurg (although there were a couple color variations). Zurg was based partially on Toy Story 3 director Lee Unkrich's favorite toy, the Six Million Dollar Man. The "Zerg" faction in the Blizzard produced computer game StarCraft originally had their name spelled identically to Emperor Zurg's during the game's earlier builds. However, in order to avoid possible copyright issues, the faction later had its name re-spelled with an "e" instead of a "u." According to concept art, Zurg is really just a small alien in robotic armor. In one Buzz Lightyear of Star Command intro, a Zurg toy is seen in Andy's room(replacing Hamm) possibly meaning that Andy might've had a Zurg toy or borrowed one from a friend at one time. However, it is unknown what happened to it, but most likely it was donated, given back (if it was indeed just borrowed), sold, or thrown away during the events between Toy Story 2 and Toy Story 3. It is also unknown what relationship he had with Buzz. On the other hand, however, this may just be non-canon, since this is just an intro. In the Buzz Lightyear episode "The Lightyear Factor", Zurg enters an alternate universe where he finds an Evil Buzz Lightyear ruling the galaxy. The Zurg from that universe was a burger guy at Cosmo's restaurant, due to not having what it took to be "ultimate evil." In World of Cars Online, Zurg has a cameo where he is depicted as a train in an arcade game. Zurg's "villainy" may have been due to the fact that Zurg (the toy) actually thinks that he is the real Zurg and not just a toy, very much like how the toy Buzz Lightyear actually thinks that he is the real Buzz and if he ever realized that he is just a toy, he'II just remain evil and decides that he can be Buzz's enemy as a toy as well as be the real Zurg . It's implied that the toy Zurg is actually friendly, had he realized that he is just a toy if he chose to. That "I am your father" from Zurg I always thought was meant to be a reference to Star Wars since there are plenty of movies that usually have some reference to other movies.
