That helm uno reverse was just amazing

So, about holding that gun over other people's heads... I guess it backfired gloriously, huh? The moment Shaun won both of his Crypt triggers, that should've been the cue for Don to Helm him out of the game (still during his upkeep, before the draw step) and move on to his turn.

Essentially, they are last in turn order, you knew they won their flips, you will get to untap and mill someone out on your turn, the Kitten is on the board, why keep Shaun alive any longer?

I can see wanting both colors on the mox, but I still would’ve gone with GAAIV, he’s goated and would’ve made everyone’s slow start even more punishing.

Interesting choice to not open with turn 1 Arbiter on Dons part. He has it with Cavern plus Chrome Mox pitch delay. Then you can t2 cast your Zur, then possibly look to either combo or lock down the game next turn with Zur.

That was my exact line of reasoning that went through when I saw the opening hand, and then when I saw the GAAIV get pitched I audibly yelled noooooooo! But, Zur stax and control is my favorite deck, so I’m slightly biased.

What a nutty win! Just when it looks like Don has it in the bag and it’s all over, Shaun’s like ✋ ‘hold my beer’ lol.

Don: Has a turn 2 Zur opportunity with Cavern of Souls in play Don, turn 2, swings with Esper and passes Next player shits out a Drannith Don, has another opportunity to play Zur. Passes Drannith comes back Don, plays Helm of Obedience to remove the first threat (Pir player) Don waits until Pir player takes his turn Pir player puts in Lab Maniac Don, king of the Zurs. No hard feelings Don, just giving you crap :)

I love playing helm. It's quickly become my main wincon.

Watching Don’s deck it’s incredible. I have a similar tech however I do not have Helm in mind and I trying to run more stacks pieces instead but I’m thinking I should maybe change mine to go for a hekm of obedience win instead

Why do people counter the counter instead of the original spell that they wanted countered ?

Normally it would be objectively correct to have subsequent countermagic target the original spell, but in the exact situation in this game (when they were fighting over Necropotence), by having the secondary counterspell target Don's protection Chad got to let Mana Drain counter Necropotence. If he had had his Flusterstorms target Necropotence directly, he wouldn't have gotten is extra Mana. Edit: wrote this before the Cyc Rift counter War, Shaun should've just had all his Flusterstorms target Rift directly.

Also, sometimes the counterspell has target limitations, so it is better to counter the tutor if it can target the tutor. For instance, Dispel and Mental Misstep can counter a Vampiric Tutor, but not necessarily what the tutor finds.

If you're talking about the counter-war at 9:23, there are two important reasons: 1) Flusterstorm cannot counter Necropotence (it can only counter instants & sorceries) and 2) Sometimes you want your original counterspell to resolve, such as in this case Chad wants the Mana Drain to resolve so he can get extra mana on his next turn.

Why on earth does Don mill Shaun in response to lab man, handing him the win? Shaun couldn't mill himself cause helm says opponent. Don also has solitary out, so he can't get targeted. Seems like a misplay.

So Zur is more better played as stax and not the shimmer myr combo anymore?

Rest in piece exiles all graveyard. RIP also has a replacement effect where “if a card would be put into a graveyard from ANYWHERE, exile it instead. For the combo to start, you pay 1 mana into helm. Helm of obedience sees that a creature never hits the graveyard because RIP exiles it, thus Helm repeats until it sees a creature go into the graveyard, which will never happen because of RIP

Shouldn’t cursed totem and Tabernacle just kill creatures because tabernacle gives the creatures pay 1 or sac but since totem says no everything by is just sacrificed yeah ?

No, tabernacle gives creatures a triggered ability, that says All creatures have "At the beginning of your upkeep, destroy this creature unless you pay {1}." Cursed totem makes it so that ACTIVATED abilities of creatures can’t be activated (thats why chad bounces the totem so ashani could sac his ranger-captain of eos.

Triggered abilities start with “when, whenever, or at” Activated abilities are separated by a colon…. Which separates the cost and effect Example Cost: effect Sac [this creature]: opponents cant cast non-creature spells until end of turn

Why wouldn’t you activate helm in response to crop rotation? He’s last in turn order and no one else is threatening an instant speed win. That was a hell of a punt

I didn't think Lab man was used in decks anymore because of Thassa's oracle, but I guess you run it for redundancy

Shaun here. Typically Thoracle is better, but in this specific deck Lab man and Lab Jace are better. The main way this deck wins is by Displacer Kitten flickering Toothy over and over again while casting cheap noncreatures, while Toothy draws cards equal to the number of +1/+1 counters on him. This number can get large and so Thoracle being a triggered ability and not a static one can create awkward timing situations. The continuous effect from the other two is what makes them superior to this deck specifically.
