How to deal with the vampiric nature of capitalism and technology: Transparent Algorithm Governance: Implement a transparent and democratic governance model for algorithms that affect public discourse. Include diverse stakeholders, such as ethicists, activists, and users, in decision-making processes. Ethical AI and Algorithm Development: Prioritize ethical considerations in the development of algorithms. Create guidelines that ensure algorithms promote fairness, diversity, and inclusivity rather than profit maximization. Public Education: Invest in public education and digital literacy programs to empower individuals to critically assess and navigate online information. This would reduce the effectiveness of echo chambers and misinformation. User Control and Customization: Allow users to customize their online experiences within ethical boundaries. This way, individuals can choose the content and algorithms that align with their values. Data Ownership and Consent: Give individuals ownership and control over their data. Users should have the right to decide how their data is used and shared, reducing the power of advertising-driven models. Diverse Media Ownership: Promote a diverse media landscape by supporting independent journalism and limiting media consolidation. Encourage media outlets to prioritize quality journalism over sensationalism. Regulation and Antitrust Measures: Enforce stricter regulations on tech companies to prevent monopolies and anti-competitive practices. Implement antitrust measures to foster competition and innovation. Incentivizing Civic Engagement: Develop incentives for civic engagement and participation in democratic processes. Encourage people to be active in shaping policies related to information dissemination. Open-Source Algorithms: Encourage the development and use of open-source algorithms that are auditable and customizable by the public. This would reduce the opacity of algorithmic decision-making. Corporate Responsibility: Encourage corporations to prioritize societal benefit over profit through incentives, taxation, or legal requirements. This could align their intentions more with human values. Global Cooperation: Address these issues on a global scale. International collaboration and agreements may be necessary to regulate the behavior of multinational tech companies effectively

Thats not the point. Instagram's MAIN demographics is targeted at children. Mark Zuckerberg knows that if all parents just say "no" then to a degree, his business would decline. Which is why he is here. Also, if kids stop using Instagram, they'll use something else, and after a while there will still be problems with child safety. It's inescapable. Like never viewing unwanted innapropriate content online. It's gonna happen at some point. So the only thing he can do is increase censorship. But then there's parents like "why is my childs comment section disabled, i wanna make a complaint" bs. So to those particular parents, MAKE UP YOUR F*CKING MIND. You want your kids protected or you don't!

So you advocate facebook and Twitter allowing child sex traffickers to make bait profiles? After all not their problem right? If your kid gets taken in and then sold to slavery...oh well all your fault. Do you also think schools and daycares should hire ex sex offenders? It's not the business job to take care of your kids afterall. You see how stupid you sound now? Did I make it clear enough?

I think Hawley knew that everyone already knows the company isn’t actually responsible to pay. I think what he’s trying to do is simply show the public how Zuckerberg responds to the questions themselves to expose how little he cares about the damage done. He wants to show that Zuckerberg knows the problem, and is more concerned with his answer being right than the family’s of the dead kids behind him.

Parents allowing their children to access social media are primarily responsible for their children, yes... however, tech companies do bare responsibility as well since they do very little to stop what is on their platforms as long as it doesn't violate the law (such as CSA material) not too mention that the algorithms and design of their platforms are also very much intended to be an addiction. Here in the US, we tend to apply laws to things that can be addicted to as being 21yo+ to purchase or use... so why not social media as well?

If social media is detrimental to children then maybe parents shouldn't buy their 5 year olds tablets and their 7 year olds cell phones. Or maybe the parents should be putting restrictions on their children's online activity. Social media platforms should not be in charge of parenting your children

Hawley is appealing to his base who are appropriately past furious. This is the drama that seduces consumers to think Congress is doing something effective. Please, Congress, do more, do the rest of what needs to be done. PLEASE. Shaming them is good for the soul, and gets attention, but it is not enough.
