Zoomers can't get enough of the AW11 Toyota MR2: a cyberpunk 1980s mid engine JDM cheese wedge

The AW11 is the genesis of Mister Two: the first generation of Toyota's mid engine trilogy. The AE86? that's AW11 we have at home. This is a 4AGE just like that tofu car you love, but it's in the back. Still rear wheel drive, still has pop ups, and it's ready for you to fill with fidget spinners and vapes and whatever else you crazy kids like.

This puts a smile on my face looking back 2 years ago, I bought my 1989 mr2 from a guy 2 hours away who pushed the car out of a shipping container. He didnt even look at the car before having me come check it out. After pushing it out and thinking it didn't run but was in excellent shape we shook at $3,000. As a joke i turned the keys and it started. Drove all the way home no issues.

I gotta say for a channel this small, the quality is insane. I just lurk and don't post comments like these, but I had to do this one time. Over here the coolant at the pick n pull is free. They also have the gas out of all the cars for free. When I had my old Subaru Brat with the super low compression like 7:1 ratio engine I used to fill up there all the time. That thing would run on Coleman fuel or Naptha, that's how low compression it was. Gas for free, I could drive for thousands of miles for free. The free coolant is good if you have a leak and are waiting a month to get the only available radiator. The batteries are genuinely a great deal. $20 even for a huge Group 31. I have some that I bought 5 years ago and they still work perfectly. They do desulfate them before selling them. They also have weird and expensive sizes like the tiny H3 which is the only battery that seems to fit in the space in my 79 Subaru. A lawn tractor battery also fits but doesn't have enough reserve capacity for my taste. Original battery was a weird size NS40Z but they are hard to find too. My mom's Jetta TDI has one from the junkyard and it was bought 5 years ago and it starts fine even in -10 degree temperatures.

0:24 difference between the boomer stuff and the new jdm stuff is that no one is making parts for the jdm stuff and original items are hard to restore compared to the older cars. So you could have a basket case impala and restore it. Hard to do the same for an aw11

As a supercharged AW owner and someone who's ground up restored the car and had the engine refreshed with a fully rebuilt 4AGZE with every JDM bolt on of the era you can name and every single desirable OEM rare part not every AW is the same... That being said if I had to do it again I'd get an NA and make a race car. Albeit having owned and driven all three generations the third gen is the best the AW11 is the second best and the SW I have never fallen in love with. Handling and chassis dynamics wise the AW11 and the ZZW30 are the most "MR2" in spirit the SW was trying to be upscale and in a way aspired to be a NSX but it can never achieve that level. The turbos are fun but you definitely feel the extra weight in the SW chassis.

And this is where the 'keep it clean for x years and the price will go high' theory goes to failure. Exactly the same shitbox, but in Corolla body costs at least twice the AW11.

20:43 I know what happened here. That car sat at a scummy dealer's lot for a long ass time and it eventually got sold. Guy probably overpaid for it, it likely had jerry rigged repairs to get it to sell initially. I'm glad I didn't buy it, almost went to take a look at it... until I read reviews about JCM.

I’ve had both and the Fiero is not superior. I had an 88 Fiero manual transmission with the improved suspension and it was fun, but the engine was crap and left me stranded a few times. The interior was GM crappy and has not aged well. They also sold a ton of Fieros compared to MR2s, yet you don’t see many anymore. The only thing superior about the Fiero is the composite body panels that don’t rust or ding. Damn Chevrolet for not letting Pontiac put a proper engine in the Fiero because they didn’t want it to cut into Corvette sales.
