Zoom vs Prime Side by Side Test! Which is Best?

I field test Canons 500mm Prime and Zoom to find out which is best. Do you need a prime or can you simply use a zoom with a crop or high MP body? Let's head out into the field and find out. I hope you enjoy, Cheers, Duade

The animal eye detect AF was key in the Nikon Z9 - as the heron face became visible between reeds of grass, I was able to get the eye sharp. The way you move from video to finished photo to RAW file is so unique and so informative. It's a more effective approach for me in some psychological way. I don't think I can explain really what I mean but I will just say that flowing from the finished photo into the RAW, as opposed to the other way around, seems much better as a teaching aid, to me at least. I have never seen another photographer present things like that. I really connect with the way you explain things.

    Superb video as always Duade. I am very exited about how the R7 will perform. Specially because of the 32,5 sensor, that looks like it can be from the 90d. Afraid that the low light performance will suffer with that sensor. Not easy to pic a favorite photo, because all of them was amazing. But if i had to choose, it has to be the Sulphur Crested Cockatoo with the crest lifted. But i also liked very much the photo of the Golden-headed Cisticola in it's natural habitat. Great video mate, and wow some amazing encounters you had that morning. I really love the habbitat shots over the isolated ones, and l love zoom as it gives you so much wiggle room and the fact I'm not a birder 100% of the time. :D Thanks again cracking video. PS do you use crop mode on the R5 any other time ? I would expect it makes no difference if you use the crop mode vs cropping the photo yourself, I understand you were showing us that to show what the R7 would look like.

    Another nice, interesting video, Duade. Appreciate you creating & sharing. I thought the 100-500mm zoom did quite well in comparison to the prime, even with extender & crop format. I don't think I'd hardly ever hesitate to shoot that lens. Of course, in variable situations, the flexibility is very compelling. I liked the "LBJ" shot in the grass and find myself shooting what you call habitat shots, most of the time. I have a Nikon D810 I purchased from a friend who was upgrading, but I'm quickly finding the autofocus system to be a limiting factor. Mike, the D810 is a great camera for sure. Yes, the latest mirrorless AF with eye tracking is fantastic. The Upcoming Canon R7 with RF100-500 would be a fantastic kit. Or perhaps the Sony A74 with 200-600. If you wait I am confident Nikon are not far off releasing a D500 Mirrorless with eye tracking and a 200-600 lens which would be a fantastic combo. Good luck, Cheers, Duade

    I like the “habitat” shots, I think it’s more natural. About zoom lenses, I think another advantage of zoom lenses is that they make it easier to find the bird in your viewfinder by zooming out to get a wider view, then zooming in for the shot once you have the bird in view.

    Great video Duade, the videography with the drone shots at the start was as epic as the light! I'm praying that the r7's sensor ISO is on par with the r6/r7. I would prefer the r7 as 90%+ of my shots are cropped. Rumour has it that the sensor is the same as the d90, I really hope that isn't the case as the ISO isn't great. All the best!

    Hi Duade. Got into bird photography about a year ago and what a pain but fun! Like your philosophy on this subject - it's obvious you like being there and that you are capable of taking what you have to it's full potential and that's reward enough. I follow that same mindset. With my d7200 and my much older nikkor 80-400 there are only 2 things that truly get under my skin: that too often need for just a bit more reach and that really slow and hesitant focus. That can ruin the moment but not the day. Looking into tamron or sigma 150-600 options - that takes care of the reach and maybe the focus will improve. Given one choice, wouldn't give up the versatility of a zoom for the perfection of a prime even if I could afford one.

    Duade thanks again for a great video. I like how you used the IFOOTAGE 71" Carbon Fiber Camera Monopod - Tripod. I bought one and have gone out 4-5 times now with it and just love using it for my Canon 6D and Sigma 150-600 as I tend to walk and shoot. No more back aching after 3-4 hours of camera and lens on my neck. If I come to an area, I still can "get low" and can use the Tripod as you showed. I like the zoom myself and will be very interested in an R5 and R7 comparison as you did with each having a 100-500 lens when the R7 becomes readily available. I myself generally prefer habitat shots. The Canon R5, the Canon RF100-5000 lens, and add the 1.4 Converter - seems almost a perfect combo and really seems hard to beat, but there is cost as you know. As much as I enjoy going out and shooting I would hate to say maybe I should have gotten the R5 vs R7 - as in buyers remorse. I will be doing a lot of research in the next several months as people use and review the R7 before I "pay the bill" on whatever choice I make. So will see as Christmas is still months away :) Again always appreciate these types of comparisons and real working results. Thank You.

    G'day mate ! Once again a great joy to watch !! In the beginning while it's still dark, you seem to be scaring away some kangaroos, but later they return for some very sweet poses :-D And the birds were in all interpretations Duade-level ;-) Because of versatility and weight, in combination with the newest cameras dealing much better with low light and slower glass, zooms are certainly gaining territory. And in this versatility corner, I recently encountered cases where I was using a 2x on my 100-400Lii and needed to zoom out again to like 300mm to avoid clipping wings when a blue heron was close and started flying. With the in general better 100-500 this would not be possible with any extender mounted on it. I'm really rooting for Canon to bring us their patented 300-800L/8 (which might be a fixed aperture lens to save weight, and which I expect at a similar price and weight as the 100-500). That would be an awesome complementary lens to both 100-400 and 100-500, as well as good killer for the 200-600 from the competition. With the R7 in mind, I loved your Heron comparison where R6+1.4+500 and R5-cropped+500 have about the same amount of pixels on the bird. And first sight the R5 image looked sharper, but that increased sharpness was mainly in the background because as far as bokeh is concerned, we were seeing 700mm against 500mm (and not 800mm). And this was a bigger bokeh difference than I expected. Very similar, the R6 with a 2x will have the same amount of pixels on the bird as the R7, regardless of the used lens. This video already predicts the R6 plus 2x will clearly win the bokeh contest against the R7. The open question will be how the R7 will perform in low light, and whether here the higher pixel density or the sensor will come at bigger IQ penalty compared to adding a 2x on the R6 ..

  • @Duade

    @Duade

    2 жыл бұрын

    Thanks Werner, yes the 100-500 restriction with a 1.4 is huge design flaw and very annoying. Yes, I was surprised with the DOF difference also but to be expected I guess comparing 700mm vs 500mm as you mentioned. The R7 RF100-500 wont get the same background that is for sure but the bird should have plenty of detail. I look forward to comparing the R7 to the R5/R6 to see where it has an advantage or weakness. Cheers, Duade

  • @WernerBirdNature

    @WernerBirdNature

    2 жыл бұрын

    @@Duade Maybe this was a specific case where the DOF difference was more obvious than some other cases: when the heron had just one meter more distance from the background (meaning one meter closer to you), it might already have been less visible. But when 700mm vs 500mm can already be this visible, than 800mm vs 400mm will be obvious in more cases still ..

Overall, after comparing our photos- under right lighting & minus the sought for bokeh, primes & zooms' produced comparable IQ( warning- bokeh is a lucky bonus when trying to get record shots in our jungle. It's dense!). I wish Canon could produce an affordable 200-600mm lens like Sony did. Lucky for me there was available porter-for-hire from a nearby village. A 3KM uphill trekking in a rainforest with a backpack full of camera gear isn't backbone-friendly lol. Anyway, great comparison Duade, makes me pray harder for the gods in canon.

    Great video mate. I'm really excited about the R7, which could be the ideal camera for me to move into the mirrorless world and replace my 90D, but I'm worried about it's ISO capabilities, since I often shoot in poor light and this is where 90D struggles.

    Thanks, yes that is the concern if they reuse the 90D sensor which looks likely. I have my fingers crossed it's an updated sensor with better ISO performance. Cheers, Duade 👍

    @@Duade I wasn't able to get a used R5 untill now ;) so, new plan here : a brand new R7 😁 with the regular sensor of the D90, and a used R6 for low light ASAP. The pulsing sigma 150-600c, the RF 800/11, the 400/5.6 and x1,4 on the work. (Bye Nikon, and my loved 200-500 blocked @500mm obvious fault not covered by Nikon)

    Marcelo, just check you don't have to have the front shutter button half depressed at the same time as turning the ring for it to work. I have placed the crop mode on the front button that your right middle finger can touch easily. Cheers, Duade

    good day, your videos are very nice to follow and i want to start again myself. i used to have a canon 7d, now i'm looking at a canon 7dii. (for bird/wildlife) is this still a good second-hand or do you have another option here? other brands are also welcome. thanks!

    G'day Kristof, yes, the 7D2 is still a good affordable option if you already have Canon glass. The 90D is also an option and getting cheaper. The D500 is probably the best Nikon APSC body but might be a bit more expensive. The R10 is also an option if you want eye tracking etc. Good luck, Cheers, Duade

    Great video, really helps illustrate what you can achieve with modern zooms these days 😊 some cracking shots you got too 👍 I'm super interested in the R7 for wildlife. My main concern is how well it handles ISO. The R6/R5 handle it so well you can still get great shots at ISO 12,800. If the R7 is almost as good I may swap out the R6 for the R7, but it really depends on that low light performance 😊 (I live in Ireland, so we don't get a lot of sunlight). Anyways great video, very chill and entertaining. Watching your videos always makes me want to grab my camera and go on an adventure 😊 EDITS: correcting spelling mistakes.

    Maybe you’d be better off getting the 100-400 V2 and a metabones speed booster for low light situations. That’s what I did but wouldn’t recommend using the 2x with it as of now unless you use Topaz Labs Sharpen AI. 😉

    @@jamesseward9263 I currently have the 400mm f5.6L, the 100-400 II was a little pricier than I was willing to pay for a 400mm lens, as with the R6 I only have 20MP so can't crop too much. I do use Topaz sharpen but find it's not super useful haha

    @@Alan3345 Maybe look to getting a used one off of EBay for around $1300 if that fits your budget and then sell the 400mm to help. The R7 would be awesome but maybe the M6 Mark II might be a good alternative as it was with me ? Speed booster also available for that camera from Vitrox. 😉

    Yes, the R7 is generating a lot of interest, if it uses the 90D sensor which I assume it will the ISO performance will struggle to compete with the R6, but because you wont need to crop as much it will have advantages. The noise test is the first thing I will do when I get it. Cheers, Duade

    Bruce, I got the camo from China via Alibaba so be prepared to wait awhile, it is also very time consuming to apply but will protect the lens. The product works very well but I am not that happy with the camo I got, just a bit too purple and bright. There are other options though that might be better. Cheers, Duade bit.ly/3szEINM
