i like to record something fast, even with 10 seconds of loading i may of lost time to even catch what id like to record (i sample sounds on the move )

If you need to record instantly you'll need to have your record permanently switched on. Even on the Zoom H5, which boots much faster and has a 2 second pre-record function, probably would need to be turned on and ready to go.

@@DIYVideoStudio hey thanks but would nt that just eat up my batteries fast ?

@@MorbidManoeuvres Yes it would use up power, but it might be worth it if your need to react fast to capture the sound outweighs the cost. I don't know what you're recording but if I had to react quickly to record unexpected things around me, I would at the very least use NiMH batteries instead of Alkaline (because I've found they last longer than Alkaline batteries). The better option would be to use a power bank with 20,000 or 30,000mAh of capacity and connect via the DC power connector on the base of the H4n. The power bank would provide plenty of battery capacity to keep the recorder going for hours. But it all boils down to whether what you want to record is worth the cost. If it's just for a hobby project, then maybe not. But if you are doing it professionally, either to sell the sounds or provide to a client, then you would need to factor in the cost and see whether the it makes sense.

@@DIYVideoStudio thanks for your time, details. tbh i really just like the idea of powering up each time i have never liked the idea of standby mode, things constantly being on. ive lowered my card as you mentioned and now i have 12 sec start up. its great you helped me with that already, im going to just roll with that. I am basically just sampling from time to time, sounds that catch my ears, it might be continuous or for. a sort moment hence my worry on start up/battery life hehe. but for 12 seconds my surroundings just need to hold on haha. cheers

Last week I lost the last few minutes of recording. There was an error message but t it disappeared before I could read it. Any suggestions?

The most simpler error that fits what you describe is that there wasn't sufficient space on the SD card and the unit stopped recording when the limit was reached. Other than that, I can';t say.

I’ve been nothing but displeased with h4n over the years , extremely long boot times , horrible battery life and high noise

If you need longer battery life you can use a power bank. I explain how in this video: kzread.info/dash/bejne/onqM1sipe8_TeZc.html

@@DIYVideoStudio nice man I have a power supply and a 2gb card, last night I read the manual and got it working good based on finding this video and it goes to show I never properly learned this product , I like it now, is there a way to have the audio only monitor when the rec ring is activated ?

@@PaulFisherMedia BTW. You mentioned you're getting high noise on the H4n. Have you tried using an inline mic preamp on XLR microphone inputs 1 & 2? The Cloudlifter, FEThead, or an Imperative Audio FETpre FP1 are good examples of these. They will give you about a 28dB boost in your mic signal, so that can turn down the REC Level on the H4n. Keeping the REC Level low (less than 30) will help reduce noise from the recorder's preamps. I use a FEThead Phantom for my condenser mic and a FETpre FP1 for my dynamic mics. The FETpre is available from the StudioSpares website and is on sale right now at only £55. I've also found the 28dB boost makes a dramatic difference when feeding my dynamic mics with a Focusrite Scarlett 2i2 audio interface. Sorry, I'm not sure about your question, " is there a way to have the audio only monitor when the rec ring is activated".

@@DIYVideoStudio wow thanks so much for the info. I found the answer to my question , on the menu I selected Monitor Off which made it so it only monitors when Rec is active. I have the Shure SMB mic and I’ve been wanting to get a cloudlifter because that mic is so quiet . So basically if I run something through the cloud lifter , it will boost the gain without introducing noise?? Which one should I get? Am I able to email you rather than communicate through KZread notifications? Thanks so much

@@PaulFisherMedia That's the idea. The inline mic preamp boosts the mic level without increasing the noise. The SM7b is well known as a very quiet microphone, so a preamp like the Cloudlifter should make a significant difference. Regarding which one to get, I think you'd benefit from watching one of StudioSpares KZread videos ( kzread.info/dash/bejne/l5eftaerp6a1nMo.html ). I'm not associated with them, other than having bought from them. In the video they compare using the Shure SM7b with the Cloudlifter, FetHead, and FETpre. I bought the FETpre a couple of weeks ago and my initial reaction is that I prefer it to the FetHead I already have. Anyway, watch the video from StudioSpares wearing headphones so you can clearly hear the difference between using the SM7b with these three mic preamps. Good luck, and I'd be interested to hear which one you eventually go for.
