Great tutorial on setting up effects in the Zoom G1Xon. I’ve had the G1on for half a year and didn’t know how to do this. (Okay, I’m a beginner. Now I need to learn what the effects actually do and how they sound.) After several sets of batteries I finally ordered the Zoom power adapter.

Me too. Don't know if it sounds good loud but it sure is great on my practice amp. Great interface for setting the parameters, choosing and arranging the effects you want to use. Love all the choices it has for effects. If I ever start jamming with a band again, I hope this thing sounds good loud. It is so easy to set up specific effects chains on each bank. I set one up for rythm, one for lead, one for harmony lead and one for wah lead.

I picked up one of these on sale. Love it! It's a fun little box for rhythm and looping chords to play along to. Much more fun practicing scales and riffs with drums and backing chords.

From any position if you press the home button you come to the home screen showing your current effect. In that window press both pedals simultaneously and you will start the integrated tuner. You can also deactivate and reactivate effects in the effect chain (in a patch) - stepping on the up and down switches the chosen effect on and off. I recommend using recheargeable batteries - this keeps the cost low while eliminating the power cable.

Great tutorial, m8! The one reason I got this device was because I hoped I could assign the expression pedal to something other than volume, wah, and whammy. You showed exactly how to do just that. As well as showing everything else I needed to know. Good on ya!

Great tutorial, clear and well explained. The Zoom G1on and G1Xon are great inexpensive effects pedal. Probably the best on the market considering the money you save. I buyed a Zoom G1on on Amazon as a birthday gift for a friend of mine for less than 50 €. Low cost, but incredible quality. And the built-in Rhythm section, even has only a few rhythm patterns, is a great help for training. Really worths each penny you spend on it.

I decided to purchase the big brother G5n, it has not many outs or inputs, but lots of fun in editing and organize everything! It is the V 2.0 updated, with more amplis, fxs and cabs. Got for € 180, box and and aluminum flightcase. I saw on KZread a comparison between mine and the newer G1 Four: they sound exactly the same, and they sound good!!

hi, gearfacts - i came about my zoom pedals (g1on and bfx-708) via your recommendation and both of them turned out wonderful additions to my sound. so i have to thank you! may i suggest you try the gadwin tonlib editor (no, i'm by no means affiliated with them, but found that via another YT recomm and absolutely love it for the g1on (it is free and works for a broad range of Zoom boxes). btw: did you ever find a way to undo overdubs with that G1on Looper? cheers, e

What makes these units so popular is: 1) Ease of use ! Simple up/down footswitch to scroll through your patches 2) The effects are very good for the price range 3) lightweight and runs on batteries Did an open mic set with a mini Dist./OD pedal and the Zoom G1on. It performed very well.

Been using this pedal and I must say its impressive.. The cost is low but its a workhorse.. Patches are great and looper is really good.. And you can overlap it as well.. Add drums.. Bass and guitar.. And turn into a one man band...awesome stuff..!!!

how to change the sequence of pedals?

Thanks for the run-through! I'm thinking about experimenting with ambient guitar, which often uses a lot of delay pedals layered on top of each other. I assume a given effect (like carbon delay) could be used more than once in the G1Xon's effects chain? Also, I assume the pedal can be used to control the overall volume of the post-effect-chain sound, to do a volume swell / fade-in? I'm thinking this might be a cheap and easy way to experiment, if so!

Hi Dym, yes there is a volume swell effect and yes you can layer different delay effects, or multiples of the same delay if you like. i think this is demonstrated in my video 'using the G1on as a synth' ...I think that was the title of it anyway :) Gearfacts

Question: Can you turn on the Wah pedal on/off easily with its own on/off button (how?). Is the Wah pedal controlled as one of the 5 max pedals that can be used?

Hi there, yes it's one of the five active effects. So to create a wan on/off scenario you just put two patches side by side, say patch D4 and D5, with wah on and wah off respectively. I have to apologise, I didn't cover the wah function properly in this tutorial :/

Hello! I have a question: if you are playing for example Dani California from the RHCP how can you pass from the clean main part to the distorsion on the chorus? You should duplicate the clean main part to a new patch with the distorsion added? Is there any kind of miliseconds between the patch changing?

You can put two patches side by side for a quick change (copy the first patch and just add that distortion to the second one, as you describe) but a cleaner way might be to leave it in edit mode with the distortion effect selected in the chain, and use the right pedal to activate and de-activate the distortion as you play. That way, your delay and any other dynamic effects will continue uninterrupted.

If you mean manual on/off - no. But you could program a series of patches that contain the chain you want, then just use the pedals to switch up/down between them.

Yes you can, you just select 'move effect in the edit mode. You can then pick up effects and put them back down in another place.

Hello! Ty foe thsi video! Firsttime using this baby! But i don't get how to active dist+ on some effect. Example c6,gardenrock,on the paper it says " turn on dist+" how can i do this? Ty man

In play mode, turn the dial to ADD then choose the distortion category, then select a distortion sound and press enter. Select a place to put the distortion in the chain, press enter again and I think that's pretty much it.

If I'm running a patch with an amp sim in it, what changes between setting it to line, or combo front. For instance if I'm running it into an amp already, would I want it set to line? Which would mean if I was using a DAW then I would select any one of the actual amp cabs (combo front, combo power front, stack)?

Keith Walker Yeah this is a tricky one. It’s intended that you use the combo setting when you’re wearing headphones or using studio monitors, so you get the ‘complete’ sound. This is so NOT an exact science though. My creedo with things like this is to try the different settings and simply go where your ears take you. It’s very easy to over-think when it comes to simulations. That’s my opinion anyway, hope it helps in some way :) Gearfacts

Yeah there doesn't seem to be any information on it anywhere XD some people that have made patches specifically say to use one or the other with THIER current configuration, which lead me to believe that there is some merit to how you have it connected.

Keith Walker The merit is all theoretical. These chains often won’t behave like the real thing so trust your ears and treat the ‘rules’ of ‘better tone’ merely as a guideline. My opinion, always open to discussion :)

Yes, you just create patches that do what you want, then put them in order. So as your show progresses, you just tap the button when you need the next sound :) #gearfacts

Not officially, but there is a trick you can do - two tricks, actually. The first way is to leave it in edit mode. Put just one effect in your chain (the effect being the distortion you want) and simply activate/de-activate that effect by pressing the right pedal. The second way is so create a series of patches, say 1 to 10, with each consecutive patch having distortion/no distortion. This way, no matter which pedal you press you'll go to a patch that switches the distortion on/off. Hope that helps :) Gearfacts

The G1on is very fun if you want to be creative with your sounds because there are many fancy modulation and delay effects. Boss and Vox will both give you better classic tomes, though. So it all depends on what your interests are :) Gearfacts

Hey Gearfacts, Thanks for this helpful tutorial. Many people seem happy with this pedal but I must admit that I have a few problems with it. Maybe you could help ? I plug it into a fender super champ x2 or headphones and most of the patches are unusable as they don't sound or make un intermittent sound in the superchamp or are muffled in the headphone. Do you know why ? And by the way, deleting or modifying an existant patch is it the only way To create a new one? Thank again

Hi Julien. With the muffled sound, all I can suggest is editing the patches (mainly with EQ) to lift up the sound. Multi effects units always have to be 'tuned in' to the gear they're being used with, and the preset patches are never optimal. And yes, patches can only be modified or overwritten :) #gearfacts

Go to looper mode and press the pedal with the 'play' symbol on it.

I've just bought one of these for my son, and now it's wrapped for Three-Kings on the 6th Jan, so I can't test this problem for myself. Reading the manual, it appears that the 100 presets are kept in A0 - J9, and there aren't anymore 'slots' than that. So if you want to save your own custom patches, you have to overwrite the presets and lose them. Can anyone clarify this? Thanks. If that's correct, I don't understand the reasoning for it. For instance, the Digitech pedal I looked at starts off with presets in 1-50, and then duplicates them in 51 - 100. When you save your own patches, they go into the latter bank, leaving the presets in the first bank untouched. That seems a much better system to me.

Yep that's correct - there is no separation between user and preset patches. All patches can be edited and over-written. I suggest going through all of them, find the ones you like, and save them to a favourite 'zone' of patches. e.g. save all ten favourites under "F" patches 0-9. Then you can save them to other areas and go ahead and experiment with them in that new location. This keeps everything organised and keeps the factory preset sounds that you like intact. Thanks for confirming. Since that seemed like a lot of clunky work to do in the LED screen, this morning I looked for a better solution and found 'ZoomLib' on zoompatches.com. This seems to solve the problem of both overwriting the presets (by being able to backup your patches to a library on your laptop) and not being able to move patches around easily (by providing a drag/drop GUI). Thanks for your videos and for replying to questions.

Can you delete the drive and cab simulations so you are only using the modulation effects? Also, can you bypass the unit on the fly to return to the amps base tone?

First question is yes, definitely. Second question, you can but what you'd have to do is set up a patch that actually has no effects active, so the signal goes straight through. Note that it's not true-bypass though, so there may be a slight change in tone purely because the signal is taking a longer and more complex journey to get to your amp. Hope that helps :) Gearfacts

I like starting with a tube screamer, then I set up the amp mod that looks like a mesa boogie dual rectifier. I like to put a flanger after that with very subtle settings to give me a nice 90's death metal rhythm sound. You could also use the extreme metal distortion instead of the tube screamer and dual rectifier amp mod. I like the amp mode more though because it gives you more control of the tone. You could also take the eq, then set the extreme metal. If it feeds back a lot, use the zoom noise reduction at the end. If you want more of a rock distortion sound, you could use the tube screamer first, then use one of the amp mods that look like a marshall. There is one that looks like the old Marshall head that people like Angus young and slash like to use.

Correct, you can adjust the rhythm volume and also the main level if it's too loud.... besides that, every patch has its own output level so you can adjust any of them independently (since in most cases the factory level settings can be quite different from patch to patch)

I have this multi-effects pedalboard that is connected via a 9 volt supply. Absolutely all the presets, even the ones I have left without any effect, have noise. I have a squire with single coils but in all positions of the pickups it makes the same noise. I already verified that it is not the amp or the cables, because they are good and new. Do you think it's the power supply? It's an old pedalboard that was stored at a friend's house years ago. Thank you👍

Yep, either that or the orientation of your guitar. I find that my guitar buzzes more when it's pointing certain directions.

Actualy i beilive it works with preselect on . that just means u have to press enter after choosing your preset or custom setup effects and then stop is on the right pedal and play is the left. Im new to it too

Planet Room it doesn't matter - bypass is just nothing. You can make bypass disappear by filling all the effects spaces, but any module that has bypass in it will not affect your sound at all.

Can you change patch while you're layering? Say I wanted my first pass to be a single strum of a lush, swirly chorussy chord, and the second pass to be a vintage fuzz riff, and then I can solo over it with a modern high gain tone?

@@surfdigby That's the tricky bit. The only way to change patch is to press the tiny blue button on the left by hand to get it back onto effects, then press the right one to get it back to looper. I've seen some where people have attached larger buttons to make them pressable by foot.

also I recommend if you don't have one get one b4 its to late you can get them on amazon for 37£ with out pedal and 49 with pedal brand new with pack of baterys and alredy updated to newest firmware also the one for bass b1xon both pedals are for sale on amazon very cheap because they are discontinued stock from zoom so get one be for to late every one should have one in there collection at that price also like an amp simulator plug your headphones in and jam no need to drag out the big amp or plug into your sound card from headphone and record into your daw

Gain is a distortiony sound, and reverb is an echoey sound, not gonna lie dont know what threshold is

@@ctc514 Threshold in the context of a compressor sets the point where compression should start. A lower threshold means more of the signal will get compressed, a higher threshold means only the louder parts of the signal get compressed. Gain just means volume - what it means for the effect is a bit different in context with each effect: with compressors, gain could be added before the compressor to force the compressor to work on more of the signal (based on the threshold), or after compression to "make up" lost gain, since compressors actually lower the volume if you don't add additional gain. If you add too much gain you can get Overdrive/Distortion type sounds, which is probably where you got that impression.

Just purchased and set this Zoom G1on/G1Xon Guitar. Multi-Effects.high.up.on.this.old.wooden..sewing machine with a wide thick piece of plywood..clean..ran..through the first page sat down..and .plugged in..first.the power strip.on.amp.volume down .using a. Gx-20M. Crate Reverb Guitar amp with Chorus.( unnecessary.because all the effects). So im playing through. a Oscar Schmidt. By Washburn Acoustic.6string.using Martin& Brothers Acoustic Bronze Sp.Medium and an in soundhole SC single coil Woody by Seymour Duncan.through just getting started...i was Divinely.""STARTLED"" .AT the Arena Rock sound .and .screwed up the patch. Bank .that i started out with.but now patiently while off work and family life i can now .spend some great times for very little.not envious at all the skill man ! I purchased a 18 foot. 1/8" line with two at the end.so now i run the headphones.not all the time.but checking.page 5 Aux In Portable Audio player etc. Called SoundEngineer support at Sweetwater. Anthony Dentino found out from others great help. I can using another 1/8" line.with "male" ends from Aux In..this is a long cord plus 2 shorter lengths .directly into this Lg Android Wireless Lucky.smart phone and can play along.! And now though i cant record it a Rhtym track got to go

i can see if there were solder joints that were structural, but there are only 3 solder joints and they are all for signal. no strain relief, no connection to the chassis, all i/o points are wobbly and supported only by the SMD component PCB. Usage in a practice room or on a stage is a no-no. The point about strain relief is that you cannot forsee accidents. I didn't even notice an accident, but it still broke. so no, nothing heavy.

no, because it is a fundamental design flaw. I re-flowed the problematic solder joint, and second time's the charm but i know it will break again. I'm using it to teach a friend about various guitar effects so if we can get to the next level without it breaking too many times i guess it's worth the aggravation to get to the next step. this pedal is really really smart, but not enough foresight with regard to the fact it is designed to be on the ground, in the dark, with cables running here and there.

I have the bass and guitar ones without the expression pedal and the guitar one with expression pedal. They are cheap and a lot of bang for the buck. They are a bit noisy, and they seem fairly susceptible to electronic interference like WIFI and such. I tend to use them for Korg Volcas with modulation/reverb/delay with any modeling/speaker sims turned off. Now if you are playing through with a guitar orf bass for the modeling, they are OK. Are they the best? No. But can you get a good sound? Yes.

great job with this vid man I get every thing your showing however im not a beginner thing with guitar is you have a school of players all at different levels and at difernt levels of learning you cant please every one im not trying to take the mic out of them but some need xrtra help however they don't realize it and blame you for there need of slower learning process I my self find this to be one the easy multi fx pedals to use was doing lot this stuff straight out of box first try out but when your learning something new you tend to make it harder on your self then it is just like when your looking for something you misplaced you looked every where and it was right under your nose all along you made it a lot harder on your self we humans seem to do this alot

Not entirely accurate. If you press stop when recording the first loop (as shown in the video) it clears it (handy for false starts) . To store the loop and keep it playing you press record again.

Totally, people forget that these can be chained up with other pedals and effects units. They’re versatile on their own but when teamed up with other machinery the sky is the limit!

@@gearfacts The metal tone I'm getting with this setup is quite frankly just fucking outstanding! If you have a 44.1khz sampling rate modeler into the HX Stomp it will work and produces superior tone, but if you're trying to send a 48khz signal from a 48khz sampling rate modeler into a 48khz modeler doesn't work, it then produces shitty tone. You have to remember the signals are getting A/D-D/A converted. They slam into the converters this is what causes aliasing and artifact especially with high gain. This is something I learned from studying audio engineer data. I tested different modelers and its true. The HX Stomp accepts the Zoom G1on and the signals are perfect A/D-D/A conversions to 48khz sampling rate. Example I tried a Nux MG400 into the HX Stomp the tone is shitty! So if you got a 44.1kzh sampling rate guitar modeler it will go into the HX Stomp and the conversions are solid.

@@gearfacts Not only am I a musician but I'm an audio engineer enthusiast. Yes I've tested 48khz sampling rate modelers going into 48khz modelers and there's perceivable in tone degradation. Again, I suspect it has to do with the A/D-D/A converters in both units have slight variations in their calculations, or perhaps the signal gets overlaid and doubled. Not entirely sure for the anomaly. But the 44.1khz just works, perhaps this could be something she could do a in-depth analysis and discovery of this subject.
