These Who Would Win? books are just brutal. I gave myself six months to recover from the last one, but Dinosaur December is here, and it is time to put myself through the Ultimate Dinosaur Rumble. I have heard that this is the worst book in the series, so I am not looking forward to this at all. Join me in my suffering?

    I'm seeing some misconceptions about the nature of Tyrannosaurs' "Need Power". Many people mistakenly, but understandably, think that Ankylosaurus was flipped by a headbutt, but if you read carefully, that cannot be the case. If the headbutt has flipped it, the book would subsequently read that "T. rex NEEDED to flip it over". That isn't what it says. After the headbutt, T. rex still "NEEDS to flip it over". And then, just like that, it was done. The power is real! Happy Dinosaur December!

    T-wrecks charges spinosaurus, but slips on a banana peel. While T-wrecks is down, spinosaurus leaps forward and bites t-wrecks. T-wrecks is wrecked, hence it's name. But the fight is not over! As spinosaurus springs back, it slips on a fish it had killed earlier, falls, hits its head on a rock and fractures its skull and the C-0 to C-5 vertebrae, killing it. The dead fish wins! Bet you didn't see that coming, did ya sucker? Always put your money on the dead fish. They have so many ways to kill, especially being slippery, and also not being mentioned in the match description. Pretty tricky, those dead fish!!

    Speaking of that, I once tried to imagine a book that would be similar to this, only if it had more plausible outcomes and had its tournament consist entirely of non-sauropod dinosaurs (since that family has so many members that actually could be considered “too big”). Going further, I wondered whether it would be a decent subversion of expectations (namely that herbivores and especially hadrosaurs would be weaker), if the final round was T. rex versus Shantungosaurus and the Shantungosaurus ended up being the champion.

    So, I have some thoughts. I first wanted to ask for a referee to review the spinosaurus round one fight. It was clearly a violation of the ouch! Rule. But in further investigation I discovered that the Ultimate Dinosaur Rumble was published January 1st 2019. This is relevant because what we know of the Ouch! Rule came from the Ultimate Ocean Rumble, published September 1st, 2020. So I now hypothesis that the Ouch! Rule was introduced at some point between these two dates. While I could not find a published statement from the Ultimate Rumble governing body declaring the rule change, I have to assume this is what happened and Spinosaurus is the rightfully victor.

My toddler, however, loved it. She sat enthralled with her toy spinosaurus and yelled happily when she saw dinosaurs she knew. “Sauropod!” “Triceratops!” “A spinosaurus! Just like my own! Spinosaurus had sharp teeth and a long tail!” Thank you for enduring the pain, Clint.

    This was easily the best of the books so far. Most of the information was accurate and most of the fights had reasonable outcomes. It was not nearly so painful as the Ultimate Ocean Rumble. The decision to represent Spinosaurus as speedy was odd, but the focus on T. rex intelligence was a pleasant surprise. The last two fights were ridiculous, but not nearly so ridiculous as the sea turtle and orca losing to the man o' war.

When caught alone, it may not realize its flank is open immediately and fail to turn in time to stop an attack. Clearly these books suffer from the same writing problem of most modern media. It is made to be flashy but don't use too many words so you don't over burden the reader. In my youth books about dinosaurs were packed with information and excellent art work. I will say the T. How i would fix the battles: Kentrosaurus vs Megalosaurus: Same outcome but the kentrosaurus would wack the Megalosaurus right in the face with its tail Ankylo vs Utah The utahraptor pounces on the back of the anky, but its unphased. It shakes the utah off its back and wacks it right in the jaw Yangchuan vs toro The yangchuansaurus sneeks up on the Torosaurus and bites its tail. Angerd, the toro charges, but the yangchaun dodges, biteing and dislocating its leg. Un able to move, the Torosaurus is eaten alive Supersaurus vs micropachy: No changes Giginotosaurus vs stego: The stegosaurus may be a threat from behind, but the giga likes to attack from the front. It bites the stegos neck, and with one rip, its neck is broken. Giga wind Rex vs tyrannotitan Both preditors encounter one another, and are angerd. They get into an intimidation battle, but ultimately neither wish to fight. The tyrannotitan is smaller and runs away, disqualifing himself. Spino vs styraco The spinosaurus sees the styracosaurus encroaching on its territory, and trys to scare it off. The styraco is desperate for water and trys to drink. The spino lands a chomp on its tail but the styraco kicks it right in the gob. The spino lets it drink, and disqualifies itself Allo vs apatasaurus The allosaurus is attempting the biggest hunt of its life. An adult apatasaurus is on the menu tonight. The allo sneeks up on the sauropod and lands small attacks before going back into hiding, slowly weakening the apatasaurus. After many hours the apatasaurus is to hurt to go on. Allo wins Ankylo vs kento Both of these armored herbivores are similar in abilities. They clash against each other, both whacking their sides, but ultimately the ankylos defenses and attacks are to much for the kentrosaurus Rex vs giga Littearly the exact same thing as the tyrannotitan vs rex fight happens. Rex wins Yangchaunosaurus vs supersaurus The supersaurus isnt even frightened by this comparatively tiny carnivore. One large bellow and the carnivore gets the memo. Dinner aint worth this. The yangchaunosaurus disqualifies its self and runs away. Spinosaurus vs apatosaurus The spinosaurus trys to scare off the apatosaurus but its no use. The apatosaurus whips the spino several times with its giant tail. The spino retreats, and is disqualified Spinosaurus vs supersaurus "Oh no not again" thinks the spinosaurus. 1 sauropod was bad enough but 2? Come on. The spino retreats and is disqualified Rex vs spinosaurus The rex takes a drink from the spinos home, but the spino is defending its territory. It surprises the rex with a sneek attack from the water and attempts to bite the tyrannosaurs neck. The tyrannosaurs thankfully dodges and tries to intimidate the spino. The clash for a while, the spino scraps at the rex with its claws, but the rex takes one chomp of the spinos neck an twists it. Tyrannosaurs rex wins. The official winner should have been supersaurus, but i decided to only fix the battles in the book

    Rex vs Spino largely depends on WHERE they fought. On land, it's the Rex all day, but if they fought in water, I'd give it to the spino, because it could drown the rex. Nothing kills Supersaurus full grown, but if any dino had a CHANCE to do it, T-rex would probably have the best shot. But realistically, the animals MOST likely to beat a rex in a fight were animals it actually encountered in life like Triceratops and Ankylosaurus. They evolved alongside the rex, so they are the best prepared to deal with it

    Ankylosaurus would've been able to take down most of the predators on this list because their clubs could easily break a predator's leg- a broken leg is pretty much a death sentence for a predator. Despite being a lot dumber than a t-rex, it'd probably survive most encounters.

  • @KurNorock

    @KurNorock

    Sorry but no. There is actually zero evidence that triceratops actually used its horns for predator defense. There are zero trex fossils with any scratches or marks caused by a triceratops horn. It is entirely possible that triceratops only used its horns for intraspecies combat. Fighting over mating rights or territory, etc. As evident by the fact that all of the adult triceratops skulls we have show many scratches caused by other triceratops horns. As far as ankylosaurus, it's much the same story. The tail was very inflexible, only able to swing 45 degrees to either side. Meaning if it used its club for defense against a trex, the trex would have to be directly behind it to get kit, and that isn't going to be likely. And again, there are no trex fossils showing any kind of damage from ankylosaurus clubs. But Ankylosaurus fossils do show damage from other ankylosaurus clubs. I'm not saying that it is impossible or never happened, but there is no evidence for it, so we really can't say that it happened.

    @@KurNorockWe had multiple evidence of Triceratops with healed pathologies in the horn and skull that suggest they survived getting bitten in the face by a rex. There are also some evidence for pathologies on rex and Tarbosaurus tibia consistent with damage by Ankylosaur tailclubs and even one rex with a possible puncture wound with a conveniently rounded shape 😅 Given how scrappy the fossil record is, we shouldn't be all that surprissed that we don't have much or any evidence of a behaviour we know Dinosaurs certainly engaged in, for instance a recent paper described Theropod bitemarks in Sauropod bones in the Morrison Formation, in spite of them being quite frequent (about 13% of all individuals) none showed signs of healing, based on those results, the authors could had came to the conclussion that Theropods were not actively hunting Sauropods but instead, since the majority of feeding traces were found in sudadults and adults, they considered much more likely that Theropods were hunting younger Sauropods much more often but since those are rarely preserved due to taphonomy, little evidence remains. Likewise the chances of finding evidence of succesfull defense by prey on Theropods are quite low, we have some like the possible thagomizer wound in an Allosaurus pelvis and the aformentioned pathologies in Tyrannosaurid shinbones, but given the incompleteness of the fossil record we shouldn't expect to find all that much. (Also consider that Ceratopsids deffensive horn wounds would had likely been mostly inflicted on a Tyrannosaurid chest cavity, were there's very little bone) Finally consider that among living horned animals, the pressence of large horns in both sexes is often found in species which are prone to use them deffensively (rhinoceros, bovines, hippotragine antelopes...), and that while there was quite a lot of inter and intraspecific variation, there is no clear indication of a marked sexual dimorphism. Same with Thyrophoran osteoderms and tail weaponary.
