I just finished a two day trip to Indianapolis to see this zoo, and the Oceans exhibit did not disappoint. It was easily one of the biggest highlights of my trip, with the penguins and dolphins being my favorites from the exhibit. The only thing that was disappointing was that the walruses were temporarily off their exhibit, but apart from that, it was an awesome experience!

Looks like a fairly nice aquarium. The dolphin dome is impressive, the walruses are worth a visit on their own due to their rarity, and the macaques are an unusual but clever inclusion.

Hey Zach thanks for the showing. Love Indy, been there 3 times now, but my two favorite times were when it was 50° and heavy winds and the other a severe thunderstorm. The thunderstorm was the 3rd year of the orangutan house being open, and the orangutans were actually interacting for over two hours with the 10 people that flocked to the building across the entire zoo, so it was really personal. The second time my mom and I were the only ones there (literally), the zoo was about to close down due to COVID abd weather back in 2020, and so we went into the dolphin dome and it was completely silent except the dolphins vocalizing and interacting with us for an hour. It ended up being one of my top zoo experiences and something I'll never forget.

Dolphins in aquariums tend to get debated a lot which is understandable there are a lot of iffy ones and some just straight up bad ones but between this one and the one at Shedd Aquarium I think it shows it can be done right 🐬

I just wish that they could add more enrichment to the dolphins’ environment. It looks like a giant jail cell in person.

Always gotta remember what guests see is just the tip of the iceburg and zoos are always evolving to make things better but yea I hope they keep their big brains busy

@@darthader3507 hi there! volunteer at the indy zoo here! i spend countless hours with the dolphins and i can tell you that we most certainly provide a lot of enrichment for the dolphins! i agree with you that the tank does look a little bare, especially compared to other tanks like clearwater marine aquarium’s, and that can definitely be improved! however, there’s a lot of things that we cannot introduce, like live fish additions, because of the foreign bacteria that might effect the dolphins. if you ever get the chance to visit, you will definitely see our dolphins, especially our youngest, trooper, playing with one of their favorite toys! i also like to provide them with a little bit of enrichment myself and show them some toys i bring from home. :)

@@lucidcolorss I’ll have to look into it. I’ve always wanted to work at a zoo, but I’m afraid the pay wouldn’t be enough. Maybe volunteering will show me if I will enjoy it.

I can't wait for the zoo's master expansion. The current 13 acre parking lot will be getting torn out and converted into new animal exhibitions. A chimpanzee center will be one of them; they already live on property in the backstage building behind the rhino barn where the orangutans previously lived prior to their facility being built. The new parking system will consist of two new lots, one 16 acres the other 12 acres, on the other side of Washington street with likely a walkover bridge over the street into the zoo's new entrance plaza, not too different from Cincinnati and St Louis. I also suggested to the employees upon last visit to replace the rollercoaster with camels to ride and feed, as the coaster is showing its age after 20 years and is in need of retirement, which they seemed to like the idea. The coming years for this zoo will be very interesting to say the least!

@@its_that_guy4218 Could you describe what the design will be like? Such as size, features, how many chimps, any unique interactions, proposed opening date, what to expect. I wonder if gorilla exhibit will follow after chimps.

Seeing the dolphin dome is on my zoo bucket list. Hopefully one day I will get to go there!

Got thrown off for a while by "anenome".... kept thinking "wait... thats not right.... amemone....no....amenome...no...anenome...no.... AH-NE-MO-NE...there we go." XD

I would predict that they should rename the Oceans zone with "Oceans and Rivers" zone, and should add hippos, beavers, Asian otters, and the return of polar bears in the future.

They also used to have small-clawed otters. They shared the exhibit with gibbons in the forest section. The zoo also doesn’t have much land space in that area available

@@ShempHoward2 True. I was just referring to the previously mentioned Oceans area, and how it doesn’t have additional space atm. It would be cool to see what they new with the new land area. I hope they add in Australia animals like those the zoo used to have and more (kangaroos, wallabies, emus, etc).

I am volunteering at a zoo here in Minnesota and it ends for the season in august and so I am planning to go on a zoo road trip and Indianapolis zoo is definitely going to be one of my stops 👍

Yes I second the SD Safari Park! We're so lucky here in San Diego, with two locations, of our zoological society. The safari park is amazing. Although the "tram" tour isn't what it used to be. Not sure why. Formerly, it was brilliant; the monorail had no windows, airflow was great, plus it was non-polluting, electric, and silent for the animals peace of mind... trains were operated AND narrated by knowledgeable drivers for an entire HOUR! 1,800 acres of savanna, waterholes, forests and grasslands. Now it's essentially a parking lot trolley ride for 20 minutes. They still maintain close the huge savanna fields (with more off-limits for breeding), but now only a portion is actually viewable...

Holy crap, the Dolphin stadium is huge! From the pictures I've seen it looks small. Did they expand the dolphin exhibit, or is this just the first time I'm seeing the full view of it?

hello! i work at the indy zoo as a volunteer. the exhibit hasn’t been expanded, but we have ‘redesigned’ it a couple of times in the past! before the underwater aesthetic, we used to have a sort of ‘houses on the beach’ appearance in the stadium, i’m sure you can find pictures of it if you’re curious! but no, we’ve only ever remodeled, no expansion! :)

I enjoy when we go but it needs some updating. The dolphin dome is depressing it’s just a vacant cement pool. On a cold day I went with my son when he was about 1 and a half we ate lunch in the dolphin dome and they just stared at us lol. But we did have the zoo to ourselves.
