ZJ rear seat into an XJ: 60/40 Split and Headrests.
Wish I had done this earlier! I went to pull-a-part and found some seats from a 98 ZJ. Grabbed all the mounting hardware and headed home. I really got lucky and found one that had no damage to the seat and was an exact match to the existing interior. $35 for seats and hardware.
Kids like the upgrade and I like that they have headrests now. I've already utilized the 60/40 split feature transporting a large box.
Total time for installation was about 8hrs. It can be done in less time with no interruptions.

For the seatback, does it install in the existing bolt holes for the existing rear seatback or did you have to drill some new holes? Listening to your video I wasn't clear on which was the case. I'm interested in doing this, having just upgraded by 98 XJ with newer seats out of a 04 ZJ.
I’m thinking about putting ZJ seats in my 98 XJ. Gotta have them !!!

Sitting in my Jeep right now waiting to get a kid from school. They really do look factory in the back. Kids still like them. All about the kids right? Lol

Looks amazing! Do they go completely flat when fold after removing the head rest or they dont?

I bought my xj with a grand Cherokee rear seat. It’s a comfortable upgrade however it takes up more room and it won’t fold down as well. I’m actually wanting to rip it out

Mine ZJ seats fold just fine. Not sure why your rear seats do not.

surgeonfish I think they had to bolt it in just to make it fit right
How did you get the middle hinge to bolt down?
Does the back of the seat still fold down pretty good
Do you think the ZJ seatback would work ok with the bottom section of the XJ seat? Figured it would save some time and I could just throw a seat cover on afterward.

Yes, I tried it and ZJ back with XJ bottom works perfectly.

@@surgeonfish9014 Thanks for this clarification! Just bought a 98 XJ and want to do this mod ASAP. I need the head room so I was planning to find an XJ bench bottom in leather. Do you happen to know if the grey leathers for the XJ and ZJ the same? Also what's the latest year ZJ you can use for this mod?

This looks really sharp. My biggest complaint about the rear XJ seats is how bouncy they are, especially with a child seat attached. Do you think these seats are more stable or might provide a better platform for a car seat to be attached?

The stock seats should not be bouncy. What type of child seat? Infant, toddler or booster? When I put car seats in I would put my knee in them forcing them down with my body weight and then belting them tight. They should be in the vehicle very tight so you cannot move them around by hand. Then put the kiddo in.

The rear facing infant seat is definitely the one that gives me the most trouble. The stock seat is so springy, you can really press it down a long way with the knee maneuver that you are talking about. However, once it is belted in, its only compressed on the seatbelt side, by the seat back. The opposite side-where the kid’s head is in the rear facing seat-is what starts jumping around like it’s on a springboard! I ended up ratchet strapping that side of the child seat down to the front passenger seat mounts to add stability, but eventually decided it was just too sketchy. So for now, I just don’t take the kids with me in the XJ.
Do you know if the deep sleep for Jeep xj mattress fits inside with the zj seats in there?

Hi TJ..... they don't lock up in the seat back like the XJ seats do. The locking is part of the hinge in the seat pivot/crevice if that makes sense.

@@surgeonfish9014 so do they actually lock in the up position utizing the hinge portion?? Just curious as I've been thinking of doing the ZJ seats in my XJ, to replace busted front seats and the 60\40 rear.. But got to make sure the rear does somewhat lock to keep the little one safe
