    Most of my zinnias are originally from seeds that my mom gave me 45 years ago, when my husband and I moved into our first home. I grew and harvested these seeds/plants every year, and hadn’t ever actually bought zinnia seeds until a couple of years ago. The reason I bought seeds that year was because I didn’t have any of the Candy Cane variety. This year, I bought a couple of packets of zinnia seeds at Walmart, hoping to get some colors that I didn’t have much of. I probably won’t buy zinnia seeds next year. When I harvest my seeds, I never try to pick the seeds out. I put whole flower heads in a paper sack to store over the winter. In the spring, I crumble the flower heads apart and sprinkle seeds, petals and all in a small narrow trench and cover lightly with soil. I figure the petals and all of the other chaff make a compost. I live in southern MO and usually wait until around the first of May, after frost dangers are over, to plant my zinnias. They usually start coming up in about 10-14 days, and then start to bloom around the first of July. They are definitely one of my favorite flowers, and I love to see the butterflies that visit them!

    In the Victorian Era ‘language of flowers , zinnias mean ‘thoughts of absent friends’ or close variations of that. Started growing my own in grad school in teeny garden with roommates. Hence, as grad school days ended, and we each established our own homes…zinnias have been a part of our own gardens though many miles apart. Though many decades ago, this tradition has been maintained and shared with others, too!

Perfect day to start new set of seedlings indoors.

Enjoyed this video and thanks for the info that is it almost never to late this to start them, except winter. I think about it every week and don’t because I think it might be too late. A friend gave me Queen Lime Orange seedlings last year, my first time to grow zinnias. Wow, was I impressed with them. Great slide show photos! Loved the first one of you with the red/pink basket! 🥰 As usual, great info and inspiration. My Queen Lime didn’t reseed but I’m going plant seeds now and just see what happens. Great video! I'm growing Benarys Giant for the first time this year in SE England - fingers crossed for some warm weather 😅 Tip I learned recently is rather than change shelves and lighting, raise the trays up onto other seed trays and place the heat mat in-between -- this gives you a lot more flexibility as the seedlings grow to then drop the trays lower

    Last year I discovered that butterflies were eating some wild parsely and cocooning in my garden. Plus, I have milkweed growing in my garden area that attracts polinators. So I decided to add Zinnias this year, not just for the bees, but also for the butterflies that emerge long after many other flowers are spent close to fall.

    Hi. I just started watching your video on zinnias to learn more about these plants. I’m planning to grow 2 different varieties this year: zinnia Giant Purpke by Botanical Interest and white zinnias that I picked up from the local nursery. I am curious how you like your 12 pack seed starter trays? I’ve been growing veggie seeds in to-go containers and plastic egg cartons this year with great success. But I think I’m ready to upgrade. Thanks.

    Bonjour!

    My only complaint about zinnias is how easily they get blight for me. Otherwise they are awesome! I'm south central Texas and they LOVE heat, so they are a great flower here! This is one of three flowers I would recommend to grow for beginners. So easy!! Larkspur and cosmos are pretty easy also. Cosmos ALWAYS reseeds for me, even after one season! 😄

    I love zinnias, probably because it is really easy to be successful with just a handful of seeds. I told my husband a couple of months ago, "Remind me I don't need any more zinnia seeds." His response: "But there might be some you don't have!" I've got zinnias, dahlias and salvia ready to go in the ground, but we are having such an extended spring here in zone 7B N MS that the poppies, bachelors buttons, nigella and larkspur are still blooming and I can't bear to pull them up (although I need that spot!). I start Persian Carpet zinnias in mid to late July for fall bloom. Aztec Sunset and Jazzy Mix are also good colors for fall, and cosmos Rubenza. My reseeded zinnias never come back as the original variety: they're always pink. At my old house and my mom's, they always came back orange. I'm trying 'Inca' and 'Sungod' this year for late summer-fall bloom.

  • @shesamadgardener

    @shesamadgardener

    Yes! I usually get it at the end of the growing season … this is due to moisture on the leaves and cooler temps so the moisture doesn’t evaporate quick enough … plus the plant is older and weaker, so it is more susceptible.
