My Secrets to Growing Massive Petunias
Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль
Growing huge petunias isn’t as hard as you might think. We found that making good choices before you plant and following a regular schedule gave us an edge in taking our petunias to the next level.
Not all the petunia photos in this video were taken by me (when Stacey and I did our petunia trials, we didn't think about taking photos at that time). In addition to my own photos, I used images provided by Proven Winners, Adobe Stock Images, Penn State Plant Trials, and other plant companies.

I enjoyed this video as well! Great information on petunias! Thank you!
I remember seeing a video years ago at Walt Disney World on how they keep all of their hanging baskets, blooming and huge all of the time. They showed their drip system, and the origination of where all of the water comes from. Those hanging baskets receive a continuous flow of Diluted blue fertilizer every watering, that’s how they keep them so huge and so full of blooms. That was quite an eye-opener for me. I was just fertilizing about once a month and all of my stuff was so puny. I didn’t realize that those types of plants were such heavy feeders!

Wow... they do have incredible plantings at Disney. Most of the annuals that bloom through the whole season love extra fertilizer. The exceptions are usually begonias, euphorbia, grasses, impatiens, and a few others.

Disney also has a nursery where they grow everything for their parks. Not sure about Disney world, but Disneyland has a basement level where lots of the behind-the-scenes stuff goes on. Their plants are changed out sometimes daily for dead-heading and trimming. It’s a full-time job for many people. The miracle grow dilution does push the blooms though!
I'm a landscaper in Florida and every fall I plant massive grandiflora petunias at the entrance of a wealthy neighborhood. I plant them deep, loosen the roots and plant with half regular fill dirt and half Miracle-Gro in ground planting soil, water well initially and they blow up huge within a couple of weeks. Once established, one good deep watering a week an an occasional feeding with Miracle-Gro water soluble, they look absolutely beautiful and grow huge. They last all the way through to may when planted in early October. They are so nice, I wish I could grow them year round, but unfortunately when the rainy season starts and it gets super hot, they won't grow well. Petunias are my favorite flower.

I always love plants that give us a great return… petunias definitely fall into that category for me too.
While volunteering at a language center i planted just one Vista Bubblegum in a tall urn planter pot just outside of the sewing building. The ladies from Iraq and other countries passed by this pink spillover daily as they came in to learn sewing. Many got jobs making flags afterward. It must have added a joy to their hard refugee experience because the bubblegum petunias perk you up alot!
Oh my goodness. I fell in love with them while visiting Leavenworth, WA. In the summer, they have those colorful clouds of flowers all through their town. It was hot when we were there, 95F+ and those flowers looked liked they were loving the heat….unlike myself. 🥵

I think the main variety they use is "Supertunia Vista Pink"
Thank you for making the distinction about calibrachoas!
Watering: also if the water runs out the bottom very quickly it means your soil mix has dehydrated and you need to rehydrate it so it can absorb and hold the water. If you can submerge your pot into a larger vessel, even the kitchen sink, and fill the sink with with water. Leave the pot soaking for 30-60 minutes(or longer) then remove from the sink of water. Then water as usual when it needs it.
Excellent information. I knew quite a bit about petunias and often get comments from my neighbors how nice they looked, but learned some new tips. Thanks!

Shout out to commenter Andie Williams -- I accidently removed your comment and can't get it back. I want to be sure to answer your question about how to tell if a petunia is an old or new variety... I’d suggest you visit an independent garden center and let them know you are looking for a vigorous, strong-blooming petunia like a Supertunia. I realize now that using the words “old” and “new” might not have been the best choice because some of the "new" varieties I'm referring to were introduced over 20 years.

Great video. Thanks for all the tips. We get hot summers where I live, so there's not much chance of overwatering. In fact, I had my husband screw drip trays to the bottoms of my baskets so they can soak up the runoff. I am trying Sluggo Plus this year for whatever is eating my petunias in the back yard. But I put down way more than you suggested so hopefully that doesn't hurt them. I still need to try fertilizer. This year I went with mixing my own soil (1/3 peat moss, 1/3 vermiculite, and 1/3 compost) and it seems to be a good mixture. For the compost, I use a few different ones to get a variety of nutrients, including worm castings. I purchased an 8ft stock tank and have it filled with perennials, bulbs, and some annuals. The tank is wrapped in a roll of bamboo to give it a more natural look. Then I surrounded it with pots filled with petunias and a few other annuals to give a layer of color. It's my own little Eden.
Hello from Mocksville, North Carolina. I love petunias! I've started to steer clear of them because of all the work. depends on the zone your in, superpetunias do not do good in extreme heat, where the regular ones do if you trim them up and deadhead. superpetunias do not do good in our summer weather we always have triple digit temps. they do good in the spring however
This is a FANTASTIC video! Thank-you for taking the time to so thoroughly explain everything. I was a petunia lover but had backed away from them the last couple of years because the deadheading was too time consuming. Also because I always get aphids, lots of aphids. I spray with soapy water & then the blooms get these funny spots on them, even after rinsing them off. The deadheading issue is now solved by your video since I now know what petunias to get so thank-you!!The earwig tip was much appreciated as well. Any suggestions for the aphids??
@UpNorthGardenMI
Жыл бұрын
If you're avoiding chemical sprays, you could try growing calendula or nasturtium nearby -- the aphids will usually go to them before going after other plants. Then you can focus on stopping the outbreak on your "bait" plants away from your petunias.
Oooh im a little too excited to find this video and your channel. I have some purple million bells, geraniums and vinca on my front deck that always do pretty great, especially the geraniums. They get about 6 hours of morning to noon sun. Unfortunately, I'm in zone 7 around mid-oklahoma, so I've needed to experiment with what potted flowers do well in this heat and humidity. I think a drip system might be key for the heat here, but our only water spigot is in the back of the house at the entrance of the crawl space. That's a project I'll never be able to convince my husband to take on haha! Thank you for sharing your tips and information! You're a gem!

It’s my fourth season growing my petunias from seed. Here’s a few things that have helped me. (I’m in climate zone 6a) I winter sow both my petunias and my pansies in February, usually around the third week of February. I moisten the soil and cover the containers with clear plastic. I also use slow-release and liquid fertilizer for my petunias. I dead-head them in the morning, right as I’m watering them. Then I prune back pretty hard in July-usually about 30 to 40 percent of the plant. It bounces back thicker and fuller than ever afterwards, and it tricks the plant into a longer bloom time. For anyone reading this that hasn’t grown petunias from seed-remember that the seeds must have light to germinate. Just moisten the growing medium and press them into the surface. Keep the soil consistently moist and exposed to sunlight. And pack your patience, because they do take their sweet time germinating.😂😂😂 But it’s all worth it in the end!
Well done!! Thanks for all the info. Nothing worse than buy annuals & not be happy with the blooms

This was super helpful- thanks so much! I'm growing Petunia Trailing Surfinia Blue Vein this year. How many should you put in a 14" hanging basket?
@UpNorthGardenMI
Жыл бұрын
I’d go with four of that variety (it’s got nice vigor), but I think most other people would recommend five to seven for a 14”. With more,they’ll get up to size faster. I’ve found planting fewer gets similar results… and requires a little less watering. Our 14” baskets with Surfinias, Waves, and/or Supertunias are already over the edge of the pot (each with four plants), so they’ll likely be 3 feet wide by Mother’s Day. If you’re not sure or you’re nervous they won’t fill in, plant five or six. You can always assess how they do, and reduce the number next year.

Welcome to gardening 🎉 Watering can get challenging when it’s hot, dry, and/or windy. If it’s getting to be too much, next year you could look at bigger pots or fewer plants per pot to make watering easier. This season you could consider moving your water-hungry combinations to bigger containers… or try finding a bigger saucer that might hold a little extra water for the plants. Keep up the good work!
Great video, so much information. Would it be too much to put two supertunia vistas and a spike in a 14 inch hanging basket?
@UpNorthGardenMI

That should work out just fine.
What a great video -- so much useful information. I am ready to up my petunia game. The new varieties are tougher than I thought they would be. I garden in dry rocky soil and we had a terrible drought last summer. I did some watering and fertilizing but not what you are recommending for optimal growth. The petunias bloomed until well into the fall although they didn't become as full and lush as they should. I can't wait to try growing them better. Any thoughts about using a timed-release fertilizer? I have a big garden and am not there all the time so doing a weekly fertilizing may be hard and I think that may be the difference between nice and spectacular petunias.
@UpNorthGardenMI
Жыл бұрын
We’ve tried time-release fertilizer and it definitely made a difference. The important things to consider is that you need water to deliver the fertilizer to the roots AND the fertilizer degrades faster when temps are over 70 degrees (so you need to add it more frequently than what the package recommends). If you can use water soluble when you’re able and time-release as a backup, you’ll reach a good compromise.

Thank you for this helpful video! I just began gardening a couple years ago. Question: if I am planting my own ( one of the new varieties you recommended in a large pot), what type of soil should I buy? Thank you

@@lindagenovese1042 Regular potting soil will get the job done… one with pictures of flowers on the bag usually works. There are also “container” or “moisture control” mixes that hold water a little better; those can be helpful, especially if your container is in a spot that gets really hot or windy.
