Trimming and Care for Young Petunias

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

With the questions coming in about HOW we trim our petunias, I thought a video was in order. Although these tips are for young petunias, I also cover mid-season trimming.

This is absolutely the best video I've found on trimming petunias. You zoom in on the plant so we can see exactly where you're making the cut and explain why. This was very helpful. Thank you!!

3:16. Isopropyl alcohol is a sanitizer. It will sanitize your snips however it will never sterilize them. Completely different.

Hey, Corey- love your videos on petunias! I planted a 30 foot supertunia vista flower bed LAST year and it is still going strong June 16, 2024 - zone 9b Menifee, ca. also planted some super bells, yellow slice and blue moon punch which are not doing nearly as well. Thinking of pulling super bells out and repotting and trimming. I have fushia super tunics to replace. Should I pull all the supertunias, too? Or just prune them?

If they’re looking good, I’d keep them. There’s a gardener in Australia who said his Supertunias bloomed for three years before they slowed down.

Calibrachoa often don’t like being planted in the ground, so if they’re in your flower bed, that might explain their sluggishness.

Any tips on what to do with them while I’m out of town for about 3 weeks. I’ve got the watering part figured out but I was thinking I should just dead head all the blooms before I leave. Any suggestions?

Depending on how big the plant is, that could be a good time to trim it back. As long as it gets water and fertilizer, it’ll have a lot of new growth by the time you get home. Otherwise, a good cleanup before you leave is probably a good idea.

Firstly, thank you for the information. Lastly, a Question: would you suggest cutting back store bought petunias before planting them in a large pot? Thank you in advance.

I like to tidy them up a bit when I get them. If they’re well- branched, I’ll only trim to shape. If they only have one or two branches or branches are long and spindly, then I cut them back more. When I’m not sure what to do, I trim half a little and leave half. Then I observe. 😀

Do you suggest to do the trimming when you buy them at a nursery when ready to plant?

It really depends on their condition when I bring them home. If they’re small or don’t have well-established roots, I usually don’t trim (sometimes I’ll just remove the flowers). If they’ve got good roots, but are stretching, then I’ll often trim. If they’re “tidy” or compact with a lot of branching, I don’t trim. If leaves are a yellowish, I usually get them planted and give some fertilizer and then trim when they green up.

Whats the difference between leggy and branching? Or good vs bad branching? I dont really know much about flowers but my mother got a black one she really liked and it started to wilt, so i wanted to try to fix it if i can I think one branch dried out and i got rid of the branch and all the flowers yesterday (most were spent) If i spread my fingers the plant is about a hand wide and a palm high so its still pretty small.. I try to keep it by the window since i dont have a garden either Sorry if its too bothersome though

Branching refers to the number of branches produced. Leggy usually means the plant is stretching and there are long, sometimes weak stems between leaves. Is it a petunia? They generally don’t do that well indoors. Watering with a water soluble fertilizer like MiracleGro can help… just make sure you’re not overwatering (which can easily happen if it’s kept indoors).

I usually spray them off with I water. The flowers might look rough for a bit, but varieties like Supertunia and Wave bounce back quickly.

So do you propagate those that you cut?

  • @UpNorthGardenMI

No. Those are licensed varieties, so we get them as plugs. Plus, it would be too late in our season to start geraniums - we phase into perennials, trees, and shrubs starting in June.

I’d trim them back and give them some water soluble fertilizer. That should encourage them to generate new growth and refresh the plant.

@@UpNorthGardenMI Thank you! I was hoping to set them out into a small greenhouse to harden them off starting this week but it's pretty early yet. Hopefully they will recover from the trimming fast enough to put them out next week.
