There are good reasons to self-publish zines and books. Sometimes something needs to be said or shown that is not permitted by more traditional publishers for any number of reasons, ranging from real disapproval to more trivial matters which in the end amount to little more than fashion. It can at times be justified to take matters into your own hands and get your stuff out there, by any means necessary. But this sort of urgency, the absolute need to communicate, has nothing to do with a zine-making class. It is not easy to imagine anything of real value being produced in the context shown here, which is reminiscent of arts and crafts in kindergarten. Most of the time, things rejected by publishers are rejected because they are not worth publishing.

I think I agree. or publishers reject them because its too niche of a concept and they dont think it would sell well, which i think would be perfect for zines. But honestly I think zines are the best when a friend makes them, or you helped make them. and also when they dont take less than 6 hours to create. art basically wont be good if you only get 6 hours to make it, but maybe im too picky. its just that the art they showed onscreen here, in my opinion, was...not something id want to bind into a book.

Zines are only "cheap" to the people who don't pay for the stolen copying machines on which they are printed.
