he wasnt at his peak lol. Sure, he was immense at the 2006 WC, but a world cup is a short tournament you can prepare for with a 1 month boot camp prior (you know, the kind that all the WC participants go through). Zidane was declining in his last club seasons for Madrid - he was still important but not as magical as he used to be. Same, for instance, was Rivaldo - absolutely unstoppable at the 2002 WC but his 2001/02 season was mediocre by his standards and he declined further after the WC.

This was still a young Spain team. Spain used to lost a lot in knockout rounds before 2008. They had some stars, but they were not as big as countries like Brazil, Italy or France.
