Zindzi Mandela reads her father’s rejection to PW Both in 1985

In 1985 State President PW Botha offered Nelson Mandela his freedom on condition that he ‘unconditionally rejected violence as a political weapon’. His daughter Zindzi in turn read out his rejection letter to a mass gathering in Soweto.

A fantastic and brave speech of defiance towards the racist, Afrikaner Boer dominated South African Government at the time. An important fact I have to mention. It was only 25 years ago that in, that black voters were denied all representation in the House of Assembly in 1960! Up until 1960, Cape Province was the only Province were blacks were allowed representation in Government and it was 49 years before Zindzi Mandela's speech, in 1936, that black voters were then removed from the common voters' rolls and allowed only to elect separate members ! Before 1936, Blacks and Coloured people had the right to vote in Cape Province only and Cape Colony before that since 1853. Such a shame that the Afrikaner dominated union government of South Africa and later the apartheid government were allowed to whittle away the remaining political rights of coloured and black people. If any British South African had been able to win the general election in the time of the Union of South Africa (1910 - 1961), I am sure that they would've granted the right to vote to Blacks and Coloured voters in as many of the 4 Provinces as possible. Natal Province would've been the 2nd Province to allow Black and Coloured political rights, as that had an English majority. The reason I am sure of this is because During the negotiations which drafted the South Africa Act on Union, the last Cape Prime Minister, the liberal John X. Merriman, fought unsuccessfully to have this multi-racial franchise system extended to the rest of South Africa. The attempt failed in the face of opposition from the white governments of the other constituent states, which were determined to entrench white rule. I think in Natal, the whites felt more of a minority, so were more against rights for non-rights. However in later decades, because the majority of whites in Natal were and still are English speaking, it had the highest percentage of anti-apartheid people in its white population and voted overwhelmingly no in the Republican referendum in 1960, which made South Africa a republic the following year. I know most Natal whites probably feared Afrikaner dominance, but English South Africans were less racist and more anti-apartheid on the whole nonetheless. The Afrikaners negative reputation is one that younger Afrikaners now regret and will have to wait a bit longer for that stigma to disappear.

  • @goodafy

@@carlosmpsenyorcapitacollon6977 if the defence you have against your injustices to others is that American were doing same, then that is admittance of guilt. Going forward in South Africa, upon UN resolution that Apartheid is a crime against humanity that will be passed as law. And makes perpetrators of Apartheid as revealed by TRC criminals, proceeds gotten from Apartheid advantage will be proceeds of crime and seized by the state and return to victims of Apartheid. Only short of prosecution
