Zimbabwe trains 4 Vic Falls 2
Tuesday 3 March 2015, the mixed train from Bulawayo has arrived and is shunted while a red SNCC (Societe Nationale des Chemins de Fer du Congo) locomotive waits for clearance, and a pilot, to cross the Zambezi gorge into Zambia with a freight train. We look over the Beyer-Garratt locomotive and vintage carriages stored nearby before being invited into the cab of the Congolese loco by the South African driver.

I was born and grew here and I just marvel at how safety works in Africa compared to where I live now!!! Cross rail lines where and when you feel like it, "wild dangerous" animals all over the place!!!! People would freak out at this in NZ!
BRINGS BACK GOOD MEMORIES IF WHEN I LIVED IN VIC FALLS, USED TO LOVE THAT BIG DIESEL SOUND!
The Congolese loco looks very well maintained compared to the Zimbabwe railways which are in a completely run down state after almost 30 years of Mugabe.
Last visited Vic Falls Station in 1995. Things have gone from bad to worse. Very sad.
Nice Nice!
Ohhh no. A beautiful garratt gone to that state :-(

garretthamster The man showing me the controls, the fireman, and the chap in the old carriages said the loco is in working order and had run four months ago.
The Congolese loco was brand new.

Why is a South African driving a Congolese railroad train?

Probably a loaner or foreign power in the states. Many US railroads will run engines from another company.

The train originated in South Africa.
Doesn't look much worse than most Czech or Polish stations. I expected something worse out of 30 years of rule of a bandit backed by Soviet imperialism
