In China, the 20th Century was marked by dramatic social and political changes. It saw the end of the Qing Dynasty, the emergence of regional warlord governments, a Japanese military occupation, the Chinese Civil War and the founding of the People’s Republic of China. It was equally eventful in the fields of music, painting, drama and literature. Behind this transformation was a group of remarkable individuals, men who persevered despite national and personal tragedies. A new ten-part documentary series explores their contributions and legacies.

Amazing documentary!
This was so inspired and impressed about Zhang Daqian.
Eye opening for someone living in the UK. Thoroughly enjoyable. Thank you.
I was very fortunate to meet him in Stockton, California. He invited me to his lovely home in Carmel, California.
Wonderful art, wonderful documentary. Thank you very much!

Apart from the wavering sound quality, a great story! Love the later work!!
This was brilliant. Thank you. I'd love to see more documentaries on Asian art.

Japanese Ukiyo-e, although not three-dimensional, has a sense of rhythm, while Chinese art pays attention to white space, so Asian art has its own differences.
Good that you also feature Asian artists. Thanks for the feature.
Thank you for letting me know about this great artist totally unknown to me up until now. Unknown no more.
Awesome!
Fabulous artist - thank you.
Wow... Lagendary great master, thank you
Your channel is soooo underrateddddd
Anytime I see Waldemar I click I swear to god If there was a 12 hour video of the guy I would have no problem watching it So please if you can find more of him try to do so !
11:37 this is really cool art. Reminds me of prehistorical cave paintings in way
Thank you for this education.
just discovered this. Wow amazing
Thank you!!
Excellent.
superb work!
the audio is all wrong, it sounds like you have chosen the wrong audio channel as the primary. So what we have is the surround sound channel being dominant and the main two front channels being pushed into the background. This results in loud music and a very faint narrator. Considering this is a narrated documentary it's not good, so much so I stopped playing this video and I'm looking for the original source..
Looks like an interesting documentary but straining both to hear the narrator and read the tiny subtitles. Alas I reluctantly abandoned. All your previous content is excellent and informative, loved every minute!

Agree
Please do one on the song dynasty master like Ma Yuan! so much to unpack in those majestic landscapes!
Sound is challenging. But I enjoyed the content.
Zhang was wise to have left China in 1949.
"Picasso from the East." I'd say a more natural comparison would of been Monet. They both pursued beauty despite the presence of invading armies to their country. Made their own gardens and used declining eyesight as a gateway to advancing their art styles. Aside from this, there is a natural tendency of Artist documentaries towards a lionizing haliography, but this feels turned up to 11. Unfortunately it makes the documentary feel a little fake.
This guy literally lived and died for his art 😄
Por favor apliquen el traductor. Gracias.
Sound issues - no big deal. Still a good documentary about an important artist.
Agree with Gavin on acknowledging the importance in increasing Western awareness of Eastern artists. Agree with Abel in difficulties in reading reading CC due to 10 or smaller font size. Nevertheless.... Thanks for all the effort in researching, organizing, editing, and producing the assortment of artists documentaries especially showcasing Eastern Artists!
If Perspective is going to re-broadcast documentaries, at minimum the sound should be of acceptable quality.
Landscape Chinese painting at 32:45, ZENCASSO says is very ZITCHIN!!!
Not sure about being Picasso but he’s had a crazy life
What happened to Waldemar Januszczak? His documentaries are the waveee

Very nice documentary. Some little advice, some of the music is Japanese although they are also good piece. The host's dress is not fit into the video😂 Generally i love this video and thanks for sharing.

“Good artists copy; great artists steal.” Picasso I enjoyed where this brought Zhang Daquin. A true artist until the end.
Come on guys. Fix the sound

comparing Zhang Daqian to Picasso is an offense to Zhang Daqian

Your title insults the great painter Zhang Daqian. picasso was a grifter. Most of his 'art' was ugly.

I totally agree!
Really boring narration and graphics. Disappointing considering the high quality of some of the Perspective shows. Especially Waldemar's stuff.
The video started so great....till that guy came. How is it possible that you apparently can make a great video, but you have no clue about how to portray a person properly. Was there nobody to till the speaker that our hands can move individually? That one looks like a puppet when moving both hands together up and down till the battery is empty. And when you have too much money, please invest it in the next video do not hire a second camera to record three minutes speaking with the result that somebody is talking to you...and then he start to talk to someone of the crew who we cannot see. And then again 5 seconds looking at us and then he's talking again to people out of the sight. This is not only very confusing, it is also incredible amateurish. What he has to say is more than interesting, using that extra camera make it in fact less interesting because you know, the best form of communication is when we can see the face of the speaker very good so we can see all his facial expressions. We do not need a side view to check his haircut. You start good, great..then there's a speaker he looks straight in your eyes and takes you in his story next you see more illustrations...that is how a professional video is set up. When the speaker starts to talk to you as viewer, and we are looking and listening very concentrated.. but then the speaker isn't interested in the viewer anymore and looks to someone else who is not there.. When you are talking with someone and you turn your head and look in another direction...and give that good man a pitcher of milk so he can churn butter, then his movements suddenly become functional.. is much better..
The Chinese pronunciation is awful. Why was this guy chosen to narrate this programme? Makes me want to throw up.

@@paulschnyder938 Sensitive are we! You wouldnt be the guy doing the narrating would you? Its fine if you dont speak Chinese but if you do its painful. I really wanted to watch but it was that bad. Sorry. Spend some time to learn to speak properly.
