Why is everyone harassing her about not being a vegan? That kind of behavior is why so many people are annoyed by vegans. She is obviously eating healthy, leaver her alone. Her diet is her decision.

Keeping Up With The Joneses not all packaging is recyclable tho. Like chips or foods that come in plastic bags. But if ur looking to reduce ur waste by avoiding these plastics then u'll be eatting healthier too since most snacks are wrapped in plastic!! :D

Mimi Wong actually you can reuse chip bags! The girl that lives across the street from me asks me every afternoon if I have an empty chip bag (I’m in college so 99% of the time I do) and she does these cleaning and folding things and makes purses out of them and they’re gorgeous. You can’t tell they were ever chip bags

I completely agree Cassie. If we all made a few small or major changes we are comfortable with, everyone would be better off. But there's this all or nothing mentality that I think intimidates people. It's ok to have boundaries around what you are and are not willing to change at any given point.

I have a small shop in my city where I buy some unpackaged goods. It's a little bit more expensive than a supermarket, so you have to pay attention to the price. Because it is such a small shop, you get more service - you can weigh and label your containers at the beginning, they have funnels and spoons... They even fill up bottles with oil. And at the end they check you out - without any plu numbers. It's also in walking distance so very convenient for me.

The are ways you can still take part. 1: Have a reuseable water bottle. 2: use your reuseable bags everytime you shop. 3: recycled loo paper from who gives a crap order online and they deliver to your door. 4: take a packed lunch as often as you can when going to work or out. 5: You can get cottom sanitry towels and make up remover pads on amazon and other places. Simply wash after each use. 6: maybe buy how to give up plastic by will Mccaullum for more ideas and how to make simple swaps.

The Witch Named Savana, you can store the tare weight of the jar on the notes app on your phone and take a picture of the item/plu number of what you’re getting directly from the bulk bin. That way there is no paper/plastic waste. I do that. Even at Whole Foods.

At my local store we have scales to weigh our containers, it prints out a label to stick onto the container and you scan it at the checkout before weighting the food and it does the maths automatically!

I have never seen a store like that. Just looking at organic stuff all over the place feels so good.

Aw don't be sad based on what you saw in this video. I purposefully went in at their least busy time (right as they opened) and I edited it so that no other shoppers or workers were shown. The store is actually doing really well and is quite busy!

To all those "Vegans" commenting negative things. I'm a vegetarian, I think what she is doing is awesome. Anything helps, so by putting someone down for not being vegan, vegetarian, driving a car, etc. isn't helping. Everything hurts everything, I'm sure that by just being a vegan, you are still hurting the planet because you take a 10 minute shower, use makeup products, etc. You have no right to tell her that she isn't doing enough. You're sitting here wasting electricity commenting hate on this post so settle down.

There's a difference between intentionally and unnecessarily hurting other sentient beings and driving a car, using electricity, things that don't have an alternative and no other way around. You don't have to kill animals to fulfill your dietary needs but you do need electricity to communicate with others over a long distance and cars to travel. We don't have telepathy and can't teleport. But we can switch from dairy milk to plant milk, dairy cheese to plant cheese, dairy meat to plant meat and poultry eggs to plants eggs. :) we can make the switch. I don't mean to attack anyone. In fact, veganism is all about NOT attacking ANY BEING. That involves humans and animals alike. We don't discriminate between species unnecessarily. Peace.

I eat free-range, grass-fed, etc. The companies in which I buy meat, eggs, and dairy products are all small businesses that cater specifically to my community. You make me sound like I’m a monster, unaware of the horrors that lie in the meat/dairy industries- believe me, I’ve seen it first hand. You misunderstand- I care about people and I care about animals. Enormously. And I’m not just “satisfying my taste buds” or “looking for a quick meal.” I take great consideration in where my food came from. You may still have your opinions of me, because I will continue to eat meat and consume dairy products, but I think you’re generalizing my position as a non-vegan a little too much. Buy things in bulk (rice, beans, pasta, etc.) and make food from scratch the old fashioned way!

I like watching other people zero-waste Journeys. I will say from my own personal experience it's just been such a thrill to not produce any Trash

Going zero waste is very much a privilege, especially for those living in or near big cities. Many people don't have access to bulk/zero-waste stores and eco-friendly products are a lot more expensive in the short term which makes them a hard sell to low-income communities

Veganism is not the wonder-pill for the environment. Many "vegan" alternatives for non-vegan goods are made with alternative ingredients that may require intensive chemical treatments to satisfy FDA requirements or the ingredients have to be shipped from other countries. Either of these result in significantly more waste and energy use than non-vegan goods that just don't require those extra steps because of the infrastructure or climate or even just chemical composition. Veganism is a personal choice, and the morality and mentality of it are wonderful, but please do not compare being choosy with food you eat to the way this lovely woman has uprooted a normal and easy lifestyle to make a real impact. They just aren't the same thing.

Or you just choose the whole foods vegan diet and the zero waste lifestyle. I don't understand why people think you have to be fancy with veganism...if they are, they don't understand the purpose of veganism, which is to adopt the most ethical lifestyle possible (but mostly focuses on the life of animals), but if they were really vegan, they would adopt the zero waste as well, since plastic hurts sea life and other animals. Not to mention the over production of animals, leads to their waste (poop and pee) into water supplies and the oceans, and the deforestation of rain forests to grow crops to feed those livestock, which hurts the environment even more and the animals inhabiting it...so, yes, I would say it's much much more environmentally friendly than "just a diet." And it does very much make an impact like this woman does.

Very cool - very inspirational! I used to do this and then stopped for some reason (bad lazy mommy!) But I am totally getting back on the wagon - just told my husband we need to really reduce our waste and he agreed. We are like rabid dumpster divers so we are preventing landfill waste in sort of a different way - for some reason those seem to be our most popular videos. Anyway, you are adorable and I have just subscribed and rung the bell!

This video inspired me to start reusing some things I hadn't really considered reusable. Thanks for the inspiration and information.

it can cost more but some items are less. You have to see it as an investment. I shall be using my independent waste free store. They say it costs more to fit the shop out to look nice with the dispencers. They have to clean each one as they empty out. Due to cross contamination they can't just get a new bag of rice ect and pour it in. It needs cleaning first. Then the is the staff that have to be trained in weighing and stocking up cleaning and till skills. This all costs time and money. The one I plan to go you have to weigh all the product. you have 2 stickers. One is the tear waight the other is the priduct you are buying. Staff will often have to help new customers at first. If you find something is too much you can have less. but you can't have too much then try and pour it back in the dispencer.

Hmm just thinking put your tare weight on jar with permanent marker (the weight of the container stays the same) just saying 😍

Permanent marker actually will wash off of glass jars fairy easily. She could try, but just a little scrubbing would make it come off. She could bring a bunch of the same jar and just know the weight since they are the same.

Chip bags, sports bars, granola bars, etc. can all now be recycled using www.terracycle.com It's a great company that has mastered the slogan "Recycling hard to recycle waste."

This is exactly why no one likes vegans. It's her choice. She's doing more than most people. Most people aren't even conscious or give a fuck about the environment. Also the fact that she drives a car doesn't mean she's fake. Not everyone has access to stores like this within close proximity. People need to stop being so judgmental and be thankful she cares enough to be doing this in the first place. I'm not vegan either and I'm happy knowing I'm making a small difference.

How do you make sure that the supermarket doesn't just open normal plastic packages of the products just to sell them without packaging for more money? That would just produce the same amount of waste except the seller produces the waste, not the customer.

If they are going into bulk bins, it would be a waste for the store to order individual packages and then have someone paid to open them and toss them in the bins. More likely, the amount in the bin was packaged for use in those bulk bins, so even if they are in plastic packaging, they use less surface area of plastic for more product. Does that make sense? I feel like I just rambled.

it's true the bulk items are shipped/delivered to the store in bags but they are like 25 lbs, 50 lbs or even 100 lbs bags so that's how this store contributes to less packaging/waste for those who are trying to reduce, reuse, recycle, etc...

bulk stuff normally comes in either a huge 5-10 kg plastic/paper/string bag or in a even bigger barrel. The containers actually come off the wall to be refilled so for stores with lots of bulk food it's easier to take the containers out back and full them from a barrel that gets returned to the supplier when its empty but stores with smaller selections come in a 5 kg bag normally and they just get scooped into the container as needed. I've done a bit of time at supermarkets

How much compared to store price to bulk price did you spend?

I’d also love to know where you shop! I live in the New England area so I’m definitely looking for plausible options.

If stores like these existed even remotely close to me, I would buy from them :(

U can do the same things shes doing but cheaper u can buy big bags of beans. Or pastas and store them in glass containers. With a lid or plastic containers with a lid and rice every thing u buy. U can. Do this just recycle the bags mostly every thing we buy has a plastic bag so recycle thats all no one has to spend alot of money on food it

katie prentice there used to be lots - my Dad used to take me along to our local "scoopamarket" in Edinburgh when I was a kid and I'd have great fun scooping lentils and other dry ingredients. That shop disappeared years ago and I suspect they did everywhere :-( wouldn't it be great if we could get them back?!

katie prentice I guess these stores are usually smaller than the big supermarkets because they arent as popular, but if you google it you might be able to find a couple of stores in your town where you can buy in bulk (i just found one like 200m away from my apartment)

Aneles, I think little Taylor may have been taught not to be curious and was called a b*tch a lot. Curiosity is what got us a lot of the things we have today. Airplanes, Cars, Cell phones, etc. So, I guess curiosity can be a good thing. :-D

I would love to be able to take my jars to the store and fill them up! So many times I buy bags of stuff and as soon as I get home I open them and put the food in jars. I like to keep a large stock of things so I like to use my foodsaver to seal my jars for longer storage.

Angela Gates we have a trader joe too, about 30 min away but the only thing there not packages are the fruit and vegetables. There are no bull buy items there. Where this girl got all her food into her jars, Fred meyer has that same display and winco foods does too but buying food like that is super expensive

@@pennylane36 I have WinCo where I live and the majority of their bulk food section is actually cheaper in my area (AZ). We also have Sprouts here and they're pretty expensive compared to WinCo, or anywhere else really, but even there I think the bulk section is cheaper than the rest of the store.

What do you mean by local tea in the northeast? The only tea I know that is grown in the us is in the south or Hawaii

$3.99 a pound for peaches!?!, damn I’m glad I live in South Georgia. Veggies are dirt cheap compared to where you live. WOW.

I’m thrilled that she isn’t a vegan. Veganism doesn’t own the zero/low-waste lifestyle and it’s hugely beneficial for people who AREN’T vegan to see people like them being reflected from within this lifestyle. Make the choices which are good for YOU.

Before vegans come at me I should point out that I am vegetarian and don’t use dairy. I eat eggs from my friends’ pet chickens (who really don’t seem to want them?), support my local apiaries and I use wool and (more unfortunately) leather and some down. As an ideal for humanity, veganism is probably up there but at the moment it’s simply not realistic. Instead we should be championing changes that people actually can and WILL make and we need to acknowledge that becoming more eco-friendly is a process. Nobody should feel forced into sudden or dramatic lifestyle changes and it’s disappointing that many vegans don’t accept that.

What grocery store is this? I'm looking at making the switch to zero waste!

I wish I could do this but my parents would throw a fit. I got yelled at and I got a lecture when I told them I wanted to go vegetarian.. I cant imagine what they'd do if I showed them this 😒

Zero waste is OK. Vegetarian lifestyle can lead to serious nutrient deficiencies if you are not supplementing your nutrients correctly so your parents were right to worry. You are still growing, take advantage of the varied diet to make sure you stay healthy.

This practice of zero waste , people in all the developer nations are so fascinated about is really pretty old trick , still 90% populations are following today. I recently being to U.S . Couple of things made me very sad. 1. People are using too much kitchen paper napkins or tissue papers. In India, I have never seen that in my house or friends or relative's house. I am from a upper middle class family, There my mother and grand mother always used the clothes. So that they can clean it if it got dirty. 2. People are too much using plastic bags, There we always use the tote bags which is very reliable and reusable. 3. Here in U.S., People too much use packed foods or processed foods instead of fresh cooked foods. 4. In U.S. people drink too much soda and processed fruit juices. In my family , we generally prepare lime juice, orange juice at home , Rest use as fruits only. In summer , we usually make Mango Lassi and Lassi. Here in U.S., people don't prefer to make it. I am not getting the reason ,It's because of laziness or not habituated or not educated enough. 4. Here in U.S., people won't do the car pooling that much. I tried with couple of people but it's like people are feeling it's a burden after sharing gas price also. In India we used to car pooling, bike pooling a lot. 5. In U.S people won't do more shopping on Markets or Farmer Markets. In India the Farmer Markets are 10 to 20 times larger than these tiny markets. We usually call it Vegetable Mundi. 6. In U.S people used to eat lots of sugar. In everything you will find sugar. Including sports drink also. I have seen till this in my university, all used to drink more coffee, ice tea, soda, flavored water. But taking only water ,that percentage of people is pretty bad. It might be tends to 2% - 4%. In India, people used to drink lots of plain water. I can say in my family, relatives and friends taking other feel like water items are 2% - 4%. 7. Here in U.S , people very quickly dispose things instead of reuse. In India, reusability is very popular. These are my personal observations. Just one thought, if 1.3 billion people will start living like U.S. then there would be no place to dump garbage in couple of years in the whole world.

the United States has gotten pretty bad about disposables. it's ridiculous, but there's a reason behind everything. for one thing, we have different standards than other countries and many lead a fast paced lifestyle and our families are "nuclear"... and there are many other considerations. People like me are very conscious of waste and looking for ways to reduce. But, for example, I have seen a lot of elderly relying on disposables for a level of Independence. How can you tell an old person who can barely care for himself, who's living with pain to give up things that make their lives doable? There are some undesirable practices in India, IMO. We can all learn from each other, can't we? Thanks for sharing your observations.

I wish we had a store even remotely like this. So what do the suppliers ship the food to the store in? Like does each grain have a giant container they fill up the bins from? I know it would create one last level of waste but the store could sell identical containers at different sizes with the container weight already known. I lovvvve how you put the empty containers in your bag and it serves as ur grocery list. The Whole process seems less stressful

Taylor If someone was "meat shaming" me, I would never in a million years let that stop me from not contributing to the mass slaughter of our fellow animals, because that would be crazy. No one should.ever let how someone treats the stop them from doing something. A giant majority of us did not grow up vegan, and since we are the minority, did not have anyone tell us to go vegan. We had people telling us to not go vegan in fact, and we constantly get bashed by meat eaters. As your horrid comment ironically points out. I went vegan because we are animals.

Awesome! We don't have bulk in our local grocery store. Everything is packaged, even most veggies.

Is it a food co op that you are buying from? Because when I type food co op in my location (NE), it just shows the one where you can buy from farmers like the one you mentioned in the beginning paying some annual fees.Is this store open everyday or just once a week?

Christyne Long Use glass jars that have the rubber seal. You can have the guy at the meat counter subtract out the tare weight and put the price sticker on the jar.

I really want to start using the bulk system but where I live, I can’t find any store that has a bulk system near me and most of the time I can’t even find unpackaged veggies!! Literally everything is packaged like 10 times!! It’s outrageous!! Like for say you get an apple but instead of choosing the unpackaged apple, you get the apple which has 3 layers of different types of plastic in a plastic bag. Like, it’s ridiculous!! I obviously go my local farmers market/wet market but if I have to buy spices or pasta or something, I am forced to get them in packaging from the system that they use.... Any suggestions that I can follow to maybe try to cut down!?

I don't think "triggered" is the right word. More like confused, tbh? Zero waste is about environmental impact. The environmental impact of animal agriculture is ridiculous. It's just so rare to see a non-vegan zero waster.

Laughing at these people recommending veganism as animal friendly and eco friendly,😂. Spoken like people who have never been on a farm, or done large-scale farming a day in their life. First, the majority of plants are grown with fertilizer made from animal-by-product, ie blood, bones, fish bones, and manure. Organic produce uses twice as much. Unless you know the grower and he specifically grows vegan vegetables (another label😑), you are still consuming an animal fed product. Second, growing produce is just as environmentally taxing as raising animals for slaughter. Tractors and large machinery till the fields, trees and other native plants have to be felled, land has to be graded (leveled), and animals; bugs; birds are killed or removed so they don't eat all the growing plants. That's what pesticides and traps are for. The produce is harvested by hand and large machinery, processed by machinery, packaged, and shipped (ship or vehicles). Most of the produce in stores are from other countries, so more emissions in the shipping. Even local organic produce is trucked to the stores.

Sounds like you haven't heard of veganic farming. It gets rid of those problems. Most plants are grown as feed for animals, who eat a ton of it and end up as much less food themselves. Animal farming is a huge food waster. Any problems you have with plant farming would be reduced by getting rid of animal farming.

There are vegan/vegetarian (theres so many of them Im just calling them Herbivores) from youtube who still end up having cancer and immune deficiencies (most are colon cancer). just last month three of them confessed their condition and worst part is that the battle was half lost because weird allergies prevented them from the effects of medicine, they can hardly regain their strength since the food they eat is "selected" by their digestive system and going back to commercial food is just another mountain to climb.

This is not necessary at all. Lol. This isn't how they produce Vegetables in my country, India. Only animal product used as fertilizer is animal dung. And honestly even if they use those 'waste' animal products it is GOOD for the environment.. those things would be wasted otherwise. Those animals aren't killed to become fertilizer. They are killed to become food for non vegetarian people, and the parts that would be wasted are then used in farming. Which btw is NOT necessary lol. Also when you eat non vegetarian food, your animal first eats grains and food and then you eat that animal. Directly eating those grains is eco friendly. So your whole rant is useless. It will 'convince' only people who feel low key guilty about eating meat, but want to continue eating it so are looking for excuses. Lol. I am not 100% vegan but I don't go around making up useless lies about veganism being bad..vegans are awesome.

I've decided to order steak when I eat out for every time someone comments "Why not vegan" -looks like I will be eating steak for a looong time.
