Torghast was the only part of Shadowlands I didn't mind at all. Always thought it got more hate than it deserved. In psychology there's an axiom borne out of heroin use by soldiers in veitnam. It was expected they were going to be addicts when they returned. This prediction did not hold and actually fewer than expected from a general population of men (there was a draft so this is a reasonable comparison) remained users of heroin. This led to the axiom which you see demonstrated in these videos and asmongold etc. "Change the environment, change the emotional state, change the behavior." So a cross country move to a much better environment where a person is happier (better job satisfaction, maybe they moved in with a partner, etc) is likely to change their emotional state for the better and as a result less acting out of negative behavior occurs. What I think is fascinating is that this is occuring from changing MMORPGs. Seeing in real time that the axiom seems to hold up even with virtual worlds is incredibly interesting and if I were still doing Neuroscience research instead of being a clinician I'd be writing up a research proposal.

I know. Once I got into this game after leaving WoW I was suddenly reminded of something I already knew but had not thought about in a long time. I should play games to have fun and enjoy myself. WoW was a game where I logged on to do a check list. Once you stop getting good rewards in the game and you stop getting that dopamine hit when RNG goes in your favor you swiftly begin to notice that you are not having fun. And once you know you're not having fun then it's hard to motivate yourself to get back on. FF14 is a game where I can log on and do absolutely nothing and have a grand old time doing just that.

I think it was Asmon who first touched on it but in WoW you are immediately set against other players in Alliance v Horde but in FF14 everyone is on the same team. Not only that but it has something to cater to all. So if you dont like raiding there is something else for you to do. There is no pressure to be a great player. Also the story is a positive experience with alot of emotions which gives everyone a shared experience to bond over. People who play wow suddenly end up in a scenario where there is no pressure on them to do tasks just do what you want(except maybe the story). They just feel free.

What you were saying about the community and how it's making new players nicer really resonated with me. I was never toxic in World of Warcraft, and I never tried to be. It was always kind of weird to see people be such horrible people online to each other, and I always felt out of place because of it. While some would just do as the romans do, I just kept up the positive vibes and tried to make the game a better place, one good interaction at a time. Then I quit and went to FFXIV a while later. On the first day I played, I found a bard playing Still Alive from Portal in Limsa, and in that moment, I lost interest in the story. I skipped through the dialogue I was reading just to get a closer listen, and spent my first three hours listening to the music. I thought to myself that if this was a common occurrence, then I'm going to love it here. In WoW, I was never usually one for endgame content (I tried in Classic, but all I got was stress, burnout, and drama) Mostly I just leveled, and chatted, occasionally dipping my hand in for Roleplaying. That's why I chose Crystal as the Data Center. I heard they're the best for RP. I swear that one day, I'll be a bard who knows how to play good music so I can make people love the community like that one Viera did for me those months ago.

I joined ff14 almost a year ago, nearing my first year playing. So far I've been enjoying how nice, friendly and forgiving the community is since I was new and play a white mage. I've made a couple of mistakes and I'm not the best dungeon goer when I first started but even then the community was so friendly and told me to keep trying my best, no worries we'll get the boss next time. Giving me a bunch of tips on my role and the mechanics in dungeons or raids since I'm still a sprout. So yeah, I haven't really played that many mmos and I usually have a hard time finding groups to play with, but with the matchmaking in general every group I team up with has been supportive, friendly and funny to play with. I've barely started shadow bringers so hopefully I can finish it in time before endwalker releases so I can catch up to some new friends I've made along the way. Again I love how nice and supportive the community is, so good luck everyone. P.S. I've spent an unhealthy amount in the gold saucer.

For WoW refugees that's like a normal day at the office. (love Pint btw, his editing skills are legendary. He'll be a fine addition to the FF community). It's a new experience for them. Even back in vanilla, when crafting still mattered and there were reasons to do some of the support activities, very few things were ever there for players to just enjoy without some reward that pushed them towards "endgame". The idea that games can be FUN, and not a second job, has to be relearned. :)

My brother dragged me to this game. (By dragging he told me there were tall girls and I was there.) But FF14 has been super fun and great. I'm not the best player around. I mess up a lot on my rotations and positionals or just following mechanics because I have a smooth brain and I just stab things. But one of the things I loved was how no one was mean to me about it. Story has always been important to me, so I didn't want to have to watch a video to tell me how to beat the boss or risk getting kicked because of my "noobness." It relieved a lot of stress to just be able to stab, get back up, and have someone explain, or stick super close to my brother cause I was so shy and scared I was going to be roasted for being a noob I refused to do dungeons without him. In Short: this game is just so super nice! Great community!

I must be one of the only people in all of FF that actually LIKES living in The Goblet. That was my first choice, and my house overlooking the interior pool area is dope. I don't know why people don't like it. But, hey, it meant that plots were super available when they reenabled the eviction and I was able to just walk in and buy one without competition... so... I guess it's a good thing.

They've done a lot of graphical updates to the Goblet since it released. Like the Oasis area in the center wasn't there when it first came out, or it was way way less interesting to look at. But there are probably a good number of players who haven't really been back to see how it's changed so they assume it's still the least interesting

I became a final fantasy fan when I first played FF2 for the SNES way back in the early 90s. I met my best friend Tom and we bonded over our shared love of RPGs. I lost count of how many days of school I missed "sick" playing Final Fantasy 3. I will always have very special memories of playing Final Fantasy 7 in the last home I lived in with my parents. As I became an adult, I drifted from the series, and WoW filled the Final Fantasy shaped hole in my life. Almost 20 yrs later, I am back playing WoW and I really can't take it any more. We all know the problems the game has, but personally, it is the community that is the games biggest downfall. I have been trying to help people by tanking, but the people are beyond toxic. There is zero tolerance for mistakes and people exhibit all the signs of sociopathy you come to expect from those who inhabit such a dark hole on the internet. Having said all that it is time. It is time for me to return to something that I once held in high regard....as soon as I get a new PC.

I feel like right now FFXIV is going through a transition where its going to be something bigger then we think as an MMO a huge group of people all around the world that are connecting through a game that have positive experiences.. This has happened over years with the release of WoW, Movies, Music, Games with that its going to bring in all forms of people that have been in such a negative environment its going to be a breath of fresh air just having fun and hanging out with other people.. It doesnt happen often where there is something you can connect with that takes off the burden that life can be.. Years and years ago when you were playing WoW back in the day i would've never guessed you would be where you're at now Zepla lol i guess a good life lesson to learn in general not to be close minded about things you never know where they might leave you or path that might open up..
