Hell, it's common you'll see women today in america wearing not just incredibly revealing clothing, but very little. Around the summer time I see shorts and tops that leave very little to the imagination. America is VERY known for this. So unless you are talking about a very different country, I seriously don't get what your point is. Also, both Japan and America have something very much in common, Sex is literally fucking everywhere. The difference is how it's presented. Here in America we have the prudish puritans who can't stand the notion of a woman showing her ankles. Meanwhile in Japan, Sex is something that is celebrated due to birthing rates and population issues (male suicide rates don't help this, it's expected of men to graduate, get a job, get married, and pump out children, men who fail this tend to be outcasts or treated differently, it's integral to the culture and the people's survival). Yes, there is a difference between skimpy clothing and suggestion of sex, it's called "context". Yeah, I know, it's that thing that people hate to bring up because it ruins everyone's arguments. But regardless of how you look at it, suggestive behavior isn't an issue in a T for Teen game, actually there are plenty of Japanese games that have incredibly suggestive material that are rated T for Teen (when they aren't censored by Sony, just check the Switch or PC port when they do, fuck Sony), you'd have to be incredibly ignorant on the subject matter if you didn't know this. No seriously, is it any different than that? One might say the subject matter is more suggestive given we literally have an event centered around getting a happy ending. Then there's the subject matter (which I've harped on previously here in this comment section) and the fact that we literally have a stripclub in Shadowbringers (do people forget about this or have they not seen it? you literally walk in there in the MSQ for fucks sake, there's a card game you play with an NPC, and YOU YOURSELF HAVE TO DANCE NEXT TO A POLE ON A STAGE, I'M JUST SAYING).

Whether remix (or derivative work) is copyright enforcable is a very complicated legal question, generally speaking it's not enforceable. However, the ToS is definitely legally enforceable since it's a contractual agreement.

The difference being that the agreement to not use copyrighted works is the same as the age consent pop up in a porn site. It’s just there to provide a shield for the devs. If you get caught or struck down they won’t defend you and may even be the ones to ban/suspend you if an ip holder pushes for it. The tos that governs sexual conduct in the game is different. That’s actually a legally binding agreement and violation gives them the authority to ban you at their own discretion and for some violations legal action can be taken.

I don't get it, the ToS basically says being a female miqote and using the /pose emote while wearing revealing glams is bannable yet it happens every 5 seconds in Limsa.

I think the issue is really just consent. It's one thing if someone goes to an ERP venue and sees sexy plates or goes searching for NSFW art/fics/whatever. But for CC, the plates show up and there's not a way to avoid the questionable ones (apart from just not doing PVP). But FFXIV has the CYA policy of online content not being rated, so maybe they'll leave it be. Or maybe they'll have to add a way to hide adventurer plates when going into CC for people that want to avoid it?

The issue is when you're doing Crystalline Conflict and someone's lewd portrait pops up RIGHT when your parents/someone else walks in. That's gonna be their first impression of FFXIV lol. Square needs to add an option to display or hide portraits when loading into a PvP match.

Like the language filter? If you have it on, all portraits show the default pose? Your instant portraits are already separate from your Adventurer Plate. Unless you set it to instant portrait, people won't see it in PvP. I made a silly portrait for my husband when he was on DRG and thought I set it properly, but he uses BRD in PvP and it just shows the default pose. : |

It has certainly enhanced my gaming experience.

Her point about the actual lewd side of the fanart/fanfiction community being the most careful to inform people what they're getting into is 100% accurate. I can fall asleep to emetwol slow burn corruption fics, but the writers I follow are always super careful to heavily tag their work with all the delicious unspeakable things that happen, and it makes for a surprisingly safe space to be in despite the nature of the content.

I would agree that there should simply be a client-side filter that would just go "every plate you see is a stock front-facing picture like they get in their Character menu." Which I would wholeheartedly not use because I find the lewd shenanigans absolutely hysterical.

I'm neutral on Plates.When i see some lewd ones i'm just rolling my eyes and move on.But then there are some creative or badass plates that i really enjoy and wants me to get more in to glamour.

It should be handled the same as "offensive" character names. On a case-by-case basis via reporting. Nothing more than that is needed.

Agreed on this and hope it's the route they take. Too many times have I seen gaming companies go the route of restricting it on purpose. It's the simple route, path of least resistance and it's the one where they take the least responsibility handling any actions. But that also takes away creativity and freedom. Never punish everyone cause some people go too far, and thankfully I feel atleast FF14's team and YoshiP is more on that page, or mods would've already been banned by now.

As someone else suggested, maybe we could get some filters in for the portraits. Such as default portraits being an option so no one has to see the lewd ones and maybe a system (this is admittedly way harder to pull off) that detects if it's suggestive and let's the player turn on a "mature" filter thT puts it to a default for players who hasndone the option to not see mature filters and the ones who don't care get to laugh. I just hope the option isn't to remove features because some people are being lewd. It'd be silly of that's the road we have to go down

I myself am perfectly fine with the "creativity" of my fellow adventurers, be it flirty or straight up imitating sex. I honestly find it absolutely hilarious, and am looking forward to whatever I see when entering a PvP match. But, I think we all can understand that not everyone wants to see it, and I don't want people to feel uncomfortable. One fix to this "issue" I can think of, would be an option in the menu somewhere, that would toggle whether it shows you player-made portraits, or just the default ones that everyone started with. Whatever the fix the devs might implement, I just don't want them to outright remove the portraits and plates. EDIT: As someone mentioned below, a better way would be to allow players to mark their portrait as "mature" or something. Then, you'd be given a choice if you want to see such portraits or not.

Thats not really a fix. "People abused our system and you didn't like it, so you can choose to not enjoy the system over the people breaking ToS" seems like not the right way to go about it. Those people should not have to turn off an function that enhances your experience just to avoid bad actors who by all rights are not in line with the rules.

That bit at the end about how the side of the community who is more centered around the lewd stuff and doing things like that hits really true. I myself end up spending a lot of time doing things like (E)RP for fun, and even I think having very lewd portraits like that one PvP portrait example is going too far. At least the community who does this stuff for most of their fun will do all this somewhere private, making sure not to bother or harass people with whatever they do (Not all, some people are just assholes, but a vast majority). If you start making your portrait like that where literally anyone can click on you, match with/against you in PvP, and see it, then you're no better than the kinds of people who will ERP in say chat because they don't respect other peoples boundaries. Keep it to yourself and/or your friends/communities and we'll be just fine. That being said, I still find the semi-lewd ones, the funny suggestive poses that don't outright scream lewd or obscene portraits, fun. Character wearing a bikini doing a pose where you see their butt a bit too much? Sure, why not, the glamor already exists so it's not like it's that bad. But when it becomes an outright attempt to make NSFW content using the base game, that's where I draw the line.

FFXIV's playerbase is probably the horniest I've experienced in my entire MMO career. And I approve. Go them. But they needa tone down the adventurer plate thing a bit lest we lose it, "This is why we can't have nice things" style.

I wouldn't mind having a client-side option which disables Adventurer Plates when queueing for PvP.

More realistically, you should just be able to report these things instead of making someone have to disable all portraits in pvp. This is only because it's consistent afaik with the other rules in the game (e.g. the emoting in public to simulate suggestive stuff). If the idea was "if you don't like lewds then disable the feature", wouldn't that mean the solution to not having super lewd or explicit chat would be to close your chat?

@@algee6005 Not much of an issue, there are already people who go through reports for other stuff. I think this is the luckiest outcome because otherwise I could see them restricting the plates features which wouldn't be ideal.

I think it is funny and I love the creativity that has gone into the sexy portraits. I think if you choose to use that portrait you should private your plate outside of erp scenarios and not use that one for PvP because it probably will ruin everyone elses fun with AP and portraits.

I feel like people aren’t talking enough about the consent side of the very obviously NSFW plates and how there’s a big difference between a sexy type glam/plate and one that’s straight up imitating a sexual act. When going into a pvp match nobody consented to seeing your overtly NSFW plate. While they are creative if I’m going to do pvp I don’t necessarily want to see other characters imitating sex acts. To me it feels similar to when people do ERP in the public chats for everyone to see. Nobody consented to being involved in that but you’ve now involved everyone. Now I don’t think the solution is to make everyone else compromise in just not having plates because of the actions of a few or saying “well just don’t look at the plates” because that doesn’t really feel like a solution and is more rewarding the people who are violating the policies. Like others have said if you want to have a plate that is overtly NSFW then you should have to tag it as mature and won’t show up to other people unless they allow that. If you don’t think ERP in public is okay then why are the plates imitating sex acts okay? Just because it’s all jokes for you doesn’t mean it’s not going to make someone else uncomfortable because they didn’t consent to seeing that type of content

Of course I can choose not to play PVP, or not that mode at least, but if I want to play PVP and try out that new game mode that should have nothing to do with lewd stuff whatsoever, I have no over option to do this. There is no "queue without showing profile pictures" option. Demanding that people should avoid a whole different game mode than elsewhere in FFXIV because some people in this game don't give a crap about consent or respectfulness, is a very strange and arrogant hill to die on.

You either avoid pvp right now if these portraits bother you that much and wait for them to do something about it, or you voluntarily subject yourself to it with the knowledge that you might see another portrait of bad taste.

as someone who is heavily involved in the NSFW modding and gposing community, i can agree this portrait stuff is tame by comparison, and hilarious

I personally don't mind those portraits, but there are people that do for various reasons and we should respect that. Aside from the prude or sexually-inexpierenced argmuent, those people could also be traumatized and don't want to get flashbacks from portraits that obviously portray sexual acts when playing their favourite game. Maybe they should only allow a handful of poses and camera positions for PVP plates or give the option to turn them off, I hope however that they keep the current level of customization for adventurer plates.

I disagree. People aren't entitled to adhere to others' unique sensibilities with their expression. Having trauma is not an exception to this. We all go through suffering in life. It's not a ticket to control other people's freedom of expression. That line of logic would just lead to ever increased censorship. If one has a positive outlook on sexuality, which I think is healthy, mind you, then they should be allowed to express it regardless of who is offended by it. With that said, I do think your solution of choosing to opt into not using the feature is an acceptable one. Rather than trying to censor expression of others, it's better to just give people the option to opt out of the feature if they can't stand the possibility of potentially being offended by another's expression.

@@valkyrieregalia people aren't allowed to ERP in public chat. Consent is essential to sex, if other people didn't consent to it you're infringing on their right to exist in a public space. It's one thing to wear a sexy glam in public and another to imitate sex acts and flash people in PvP with it. They did not consent to seeing that, therefore it is not ok. Also that can possibly get the game banned in other countries therby infringing on other people's opportunity to even play the game, which is partly why it's against ToS in the first place. You can cry about freedom of expression all you want, it's still sexual harassment to flash people etc without their consent. And while it may not be your job to provide a considerate and safe environment for others, it is SE's job in this case.

Something being suggestive is not equivalent to being explicit. The game's rated T. T games are known for having sexually suggestive themes. The online interactions are unrated. Adhering to other countries' cultures or laws is not always a healthy, agreeable thing to do. If they can't play because of their overly authoritarian laws, then they should try to fix their government. E.g. it's illegal to be LGBT and express LGBT romance in some countries. If you don't agree with another country's culture or laws, it's more than fair to not respect them. There is nothing noble about cowing down to such things that one vehemently disagrees with. Maybe you take pride in being a sheep in that way, but that's your choice. You can indulge it all you want, but you are in the wrong to try to force it on others, and you will be rightfully shut down and socially ostracized when you attempt to do so by those who disagree with your way of life. Stay in your own flock if you are all about that type of culture and authoritarian busy bodying. To others, it's toxic and we are opposed to it. We can leave each other be and co-exist or we can fight about it. It's probably better to do the former though. Blacklist if you want. That's why it's there. okay, hear me out. what if players can tag other player's (or their own) plates as "Suggestive" and then they can decide if they want said plates displayed. like, they can toggle "Display adventurer plates tagged as suggestive". that way, people who care can hide other people's plates for players who don't want to see nsfw stuff and people who DO want to see the funny/nsfw stuff get to do so.

That could definitely be a thing to implement. Of course, it requires these people actually say that their plate is "suggestive", potentially meaning people will make lewd plates, not tick them as suggestive, and we end up in the situation we're already in.

What people are REALLY saying is that the developers have given the community 'Too Many Tools' for creativity in game. Because the model and emote which could be expressed in that exact way was never an issue before. The Reason it's more of an issue now is that it's in your face. (Which pretty much has always been in your face now in Limsa) This can easily be resolved by allowing the adventure plates to be a skippable cutscene. Then those who don't wanna see can skip and those who do can view them. But at no point should the player base be blamed, penalized, hindered or told not to do something in which the tools have left them free to do so. The actual issue lies with the liberty the devs have given. Ultimately I think they did the right choice and overtime the novelty of suggestive pictures will minimize and lose most of its shock factor.

Yep can't expect animals to not be animals

The easiest solution overall would be to allow players to hide instant portraits in content, or simply have a default portrait to load in - something static and not changed by the player themselves, that way players can still see their teammates/opponents in PvP, but don't need to see close-ups of people's butts, noses, or crotches if they don't want to. I don't think policing players who make lewd portraits is gonna work, since that's such a grey area and it'd end up taking a lot of time and effort on the part of the GMs to constantly pull aside every Miqo'te in 2B bottoms and get them to change their portrait. It's a losing battle of attrition.

I kind of love the effort the guy put into gripping his wood handle, I personally would die laughing if I saw that in a crystal conflict loading screen. I'm also a total degen who's character cosplays as Vanilla from Nekopara so take that as you will.

They should let you tag your adventure plate for being mature, and you have to click the button to see it. And people could troll with that too, as well as having lewd images.

I have two portraits, one lewd for my default plate that you get from checking my profile, but for pvp if have a standard sfw pose

Idk if u read between the lines but zepla is taking about how people in the NSFW community operate around hardcore kinks. BDSM would be seen as overall abusive without the community enforced protections in place. Kinksters carefully draw lines of consent and showing non consenting ppl ur wood in public doesn't fall under that

@@HiddenEvilStudios to relate back to the poster, people in sex positive and more hardcore lewd spaces are careful not to put content in places that may trigger people because they know how it reflects on the community and the effects it can have on people. Even people seeing xiv as a lewd rp game still apply these rules. Nobody is asking for sexy butt poses to be removed (I don't even want the wood holding removed) but I can see how displaying simulated sex acts in pvp without an option to disable this is an issue that could cause lewd plates to be heavily curtailed

Plus they can't really do that exactly since people have spent PVP crystals on the specific emotes. If they take that away, you can be sure it will be the worst idea they decided to do.

10:20 - 11:24 This is 100% true in the ERP scene in FFXIV. The community self-polices that down to the dot when it comes to making it perfectly clear what someone is getting into. People who say that people are being sensitive about all the nsfw stuff are the ones who haven't ACTUALLY done it nor dove into that side deep enough. Heck, they even use the Looking for Meld tag as the indicator for NSFW RP and still lets people know that if you are uncomfortable let someone know or feel free to stop at anytime. Even with that new update regarding ERP in the ToS a few months ago before EW dropped didn't really change that behavior and its players being responsible when engaging into sessions/screenshots/art/etc when telling people before hand that even displays any sort of interest in that side of the community. ...damn i didn't think i'd go this hard over nsfw ffxiv stuff....no pun intended. Long story short, yes. The people who actually indulges in those kind of things in the game are the number one defenders of others being comfortable and knowing what is about to go down miles before they even take that first step.

I can see the Dev’s creating a more restrictive ruling for PvP profiles portraits. I’m kinda disappointed that the devs did not make a separate Adv plate for PvP. I have no issue with PvE or any of the RP and ERP adv plates having lewd or nsfw stuff as I have to personally go after them to find it. But yeah, have the nsfw pics blow up in my face during PvP is not cool. They need to restrict it.

That’s literally the same argument as guys saying “well look how she dressed”. Outfits are not consent. And yeah it’s not a big deal unless you don’t want your account banned. If you don’t want your account banned, try following the terms of service. Honestly, Square Enix could have a “sex pose” button that animated sex and the simple fact that it is explicitly mentioned as being against the TOS would mean you aren’t allowed to push the button, even though it would exist and have no other purpose. Consider all such buttons, outfits, etc as “ban my account” buttons. Like the fruit of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. You’d have to be an idiot to push it. But idiots are plentiful, it seems.

@@Mathignihilcehk I’ll have to disagree. This person didn’t say, we should be forced to view these outfits. They only said that the suggestive poses should be a given considering the suggestive outfits the player base is given. Which I believe is true, not many people dress themselves up in a sexual manner to just act as if they’re in casual everyday clothes. What we should have is a filter similar to the profanity one where the plates are stuck in default pose should you have it toggled. So that people aren’t forced to witness these plates if they’re uncomfortable. Also, I feel it’s a ridiculous jump compare this comment to a violation of consent such as the one you eluded to. It’s not the same situation and i don’t think that jumping to name calling as well really sells your point.

I kinda dislike the R17 argument, because not all 17-year-old people are alike, and even older people maybe will be uncomfortable with it, it's one thing when you actively look for sexualized content, another when you see it there it has nothing to do with anything you sign up for.

Tbh it shouldn't really be part of a discussion, as its outlined in both the FFXIV ToS & Adventurer plate policy: -- Displaying “evocative (bringing strong images, memories, or feelings to mind) sexual activities” is an “obscene/indecent expression” and thus violation of the rules *If you’re doing it in public or with a partner who’s not into the whole thing.* Basically, these things are technically against the rules, but you’re only likely to get in trouble for it if you’re reported -- Plates are publicly visible to anyone, meaning you are displaying these evocative sexual activities to everyone, not in private, thus is a violation to anyone who sees it and isn't into NSFW / Lewd stuff, and can be reported by anyone for having one. Its quite simple really.
